Live Updates: Punjab unveils Rs5.46 trillion tax-free budget

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari said on Sunday that foolproof security arrangements were made during the auspicious occasion of Eid Al-Azha.

In her special message, Bokhari extended Eid wishes to the entire nation, stressing the need to not forget loved ones and people around during Eid celebrations.

“I would like to extend my Eid wishes to the people of Pakistan and Muslims around the world,” she added.

She said, “All security institutions are mobilised to ensure the protection of the masses.”

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has strongly opposed the construction of new canals, particularly the Cholistan Canal, stating that such projects threaten Sindh’s water rights and the ecological balance of the Indus River.

During a meeting with senior journalists in Karachi, he reiterated that his government would resist any attempt to build canals without provincial consensus.

Murad Ali Shah emphasized that the Indus River is the lifeline of Sindh and warned the federal government against proceeding with projects that could disrupt the province’s water supply. “We will not allow the construction of canals in any form. The PPP has always stood against such projects, just as we did with the Kalabagh Dam,” he stated. 

Opposition to Cholistan Canal

The Sindh CM specifically raised concerns about the Cholistan Canal, which he claims is being pursued without proper consultation. He accused Indus River System Authority (IRSA) of issuing an incorrect water certificate and challenged the data being used to justify the project. “If, as claimed, 27MAF (million acre-feet) of water is flowing into the delta, why is our delta drying up instead of turning green?” he questioned.

Shah also criticized the Punjab government’s decision to allocate land for corporate farming under the Green Pakistan Initiative, arguing that such projects should be implemented fairly across all provinces. He revealed that Sindh has provided land for the initiative in Umarkot and Dadu, but the province remains concerned about the unequal distribution of resources.

Federal govt's role & political divide

The chief minister urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to officially declare that the federal government will not support the canal project. “Even if the prime minister does not make this announcement, we will continue to stand with the people of Sindh,” he asserted.

He also noted that President Asif Ali Zardari had opposed the construction of these canals during a joint parliamentary session, reinforcing the PPP’s stance against the project. He warned that, like the Kalabagh Dam controversy, the Cholistan Canal could become a divisive national issue.

Furthermore, Murad Ali Shah claimed that the opposition is attempting to destabilize the federal government and questioned whether his party should play into their hands. He maintained that PPP remains committed to safeguarding Sindh’s interests, even if it means confronting the federal authorities. 

"This government cannot function without the PPP. We will go to any extent to protect the interests of Sindh," Murad asserted. 

Water crisis & future strategy

Addressing the broader issue of water scarcity in Sindh, Shah highlighted that the Indus River’s water supply has significantly decreased over the last 25 years. He pointed out that before Pakistan’s creation, Sindh had more agricultural land than Punjab, but now engineering and water management decisions have disadvantaged the province.

He vowed to take the matter to the Council of Common Interests (CCI) and Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) to ensure Sindh’s objections are heard at the highest levels. “We will fight this legally and constitutionally,” he stated.

All the private schools in the Punjab's provincial capital will remain closed on March 28.

According to details, the district educational authority had issued a notification in this regard.

On the other side, the BISE Lahore made it clear that the grade-9 examination will be held tomorrow according to the schedule.

The grade-9 examination on April 4 will be commenced according to the date sheet.

Eid-Al-Fitr: Educational institutions to remain closed for 10 days

Separately, it was reported that all the public schools in Punjab will remain closed for 10 days during the auspicious occasion of Eid-Al-Fitr.

According to the details, the Punjab School Education Department (SED) had issued a notification of the extended holidays in educational institutions.

Schools will remain closed from March 28 to April 6.

However, teachers will come to school to announce examination results on April 4.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched a Women’s Safety Squad in Layyah in a move to enhance women's security.

Formed under her special directives and those of the Inspector General (IG) Punjab Police, the initiative aims to provide a safe environment for women, particularly during the festive Eid shopping season.

Operating under District Police Officer (DPO) Layyah Muhammad Ali Waseem, the squad comprises exclusively female police officers tasked with ensuring women’s protection in crowded marketplaces. Additionally, police camps will be set up in key commercial areas, where female personnel will remain on duty to offer immediate assistance.

The squad has been directed to take proactive measures against harassment, theft, and other crimes. The squad will patrol markets on foot and motorbikes, maintaining a strong presence to deter any unlawful activity.

CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif has consistently emphasised women's empowerment and safety. The launch of this squad aligns with her broader vision of creating a secure environment where women can move freely without fear.

This initiative underscores the government’s resolve to uphold women’s rights and foster an inclusive society, reinforcing its commitment to a safer Punjab.

Hamas spokesman Abdel Latif al-Qanou was reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza, according to Hamas-affiliated Shehab news agency on Wednesday night.

Al-Qanou, one of Hamas’s most prominent media figures, was targeted in Jabaliya, as reported by the Hamas-run Al-Aqsa television. Several others were wounded in the attack, medical sources confirmed.

Al-Qanou had been a key spokesperson for Hamas since 2016, previously serving as the media director for Hamas’s offices in northern Gaza. Born in Jabaliya on April 24, 1981, he pursued higher education at the Islamic University of Gaza and obtained a doctorate in preaching and media from the University of Tripoli in Lebanon in 2019. He had been affiliated with Hamas since the Second Intifada in 2000.

His reported killing follows the recent deaths of senior Hamas figures Ismail Barhoum and Salah al-Bardaweel, both members of Hamas’s 20-member political office. According to Hamas sources, 11 of these officials have been killed since the war began in late 2023.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has yet to comment on al-Qanou’s reported elimination. However, since the resumption of fighting last week, the IDF has reportedly killed 150 Hamas militants, including 10 senior officials. Israeli forces have continued operations in several key areas of Gaza, including Jabaliya, Khan Yunis, Beit Lahia, and Beit Hanoun.

The Punjab Education Department has issued a notification detailing revised school timings, set to be implemented after the Eidul Fitr holidays.

According to the official notification, the new schedule will take effect from April 7 and will remain in place until October 15.

Revised school timings

For single-shift schools, classes will commence at 8:00 am and conclude at 1:30 pm, while on Fridays, schools will close at 12:00 pm.

In double-shift institutions, the first shift will start at 8:00 am and end at 12:30 pm, with Friday timings adjusted to conclude at 12:00 pm.

The second shift is scheduled to begin at 1:00 pm and continue until 5:30 pm. However, on Fridays, the second shift will start at 2:30 pm.

Eid holidays and academic calendar

The Punjab government has also announced that schools will remain closed for Eidul Fitr from March 28 (Friday) to April 6 (Sunday), with regular academic activities resuming on April 7.

Meanwhile, the results of annual examinations are set to be announced on April 4, providing students and parents with clarity regarding academic performance before the new school year begins.

The Secretary of the School Education Department confirmed the development on Wednesday, stating that the extended break would allow students and teachers to celebrate Eid with their families and return refreshed for the new term.

College holiday schedule

Separately, the Punjab Higher Education Department has issued a notification for Eid holidays in public and private colleges.

According to the statement, all colleges across the province will remain closed from March 28 (Friday) to April 2 (Wednesday).

All public schools in Punjab will remain closed for 10 days during the auspicious occasion of Eid-Al-Fitr.

The Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz-led Punjab government on Wednesday launched a province-wide declaration campaign to regulate the ownership of big cats, including lions, cheetahs, jaguars, and leopards.

In the first phase of the initiative, the Punjab Wildlife Department has issued directives requiring all owners to formally declare their big cats within 30 days.

A public notice has been issued, mandating that details such as the animal's breed, age, location, and number be submitted through the newly introduced "Wildlife PASS App" for streamlined documentation.

Failure to comply within the stipulated period will result in strict action, with cases registered against violators. According to officials, keeping a big cat without a license is now a non-bailable offence, punishable by up to seven years in prison along with a hefty fine.

Additionally, any unregistered lion, cheetah, jaguar, or leopard found in possession of an individual will be confiscated.

The government has taken this step to address concerns related to public safety, animal welfare, and the illegal trade of big cats. Through recent legislative amendments to the Punjab Wildlife Act of 1974, these animals have been added to Schedule II, necessitating stricter regulatory measures.

To obtain a license, applicants must meet a series of prescribed conditions formulated in accordance with international standards. The complete criteria have been made available on the Punjab Wildlife Department’s website. Officials have assured that dedicated teams will assist owners throughout the declaration process.

Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has responded to concerns raised over the quality of Hindi commentary during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.

A cricket fan had pointed out that Hindi commentary in the past, led by Maninder Singh and Arun Lal, was more insightful, whereas the current panel, which includes Virender Sehwag, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Robin Uthappa, and Ambati Rayudu, among others, relied heavily on sarcasm and one-liners, making it difficult for viewers to stay engaged with the game.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a drought alert for Sindh, Balochistan, and Punjab, warning that the situation could deteriorate further due to a significant rainfall deficit and rising temperatures.

According to official data, between September 1, 2024, and March 21, 2025, the country received 40% less rainfall than normal. Sindh recorded the highest deficit at 62%, followed by Balochistan at 52%, Punjab at 38%, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at 35%, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir at 29%.

The PMD noted that while recent rainfall spells have improved conditions in central and upper regions, drought conditions persist in southern Sindh, parts of Balochistan, and the lower eastern plains of Punjab. The situation is further exacerbated by unusually high temperatures, with March 2025 temperatures in the lower half of the country recorded at 2-3°C above normal.

“There is severe water scarcity in Tarbela and Mangla Dams,” the PMD stated, adding that the current water levels in Tarbela and Mangla stand at 1,402 feet and 1,061.75 feet, respectively—both at dead levels. The flow of water in major rivers has also dropped to critically low levels.

Worsening drought conditions

The PMD’s National Drought Monitoring and Early Warning Center (NDMC) has warned that the drought situation is expected to intensify in the coming months, particularly in Sindh, Balochistan, and Punjab. In several parts of southern Pakistan, consecutive dry days have exceeded 200, significantly depleting soil moisture and increasing water demand.

In Sindh, moderate drought conditions are expected in Paddidan, Shaheed Benazirabad, Dadu, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Khairpur, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, and Karachi, while mild drought is likely in Ghotki, Jacobabad, Larkana, Sukkur, and Sanghar.

Balochistan’s most affected areas include Gwadar, Kech, Lasbela, Panjgur, and Awaran, where moderate drought conditions prevail. Other affected districts, including Chagai, Jaffarabad, Jhal Magsi, Sibi, Nushki, and Washuk, are also experiencing deteriorating conditions.

In Punjab, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, and Rahim Yar Khan are expected to face mild to moderate drought conditions.

Emerging flash droughts

The PMD has also warned of the emergence of flash droughts—rapidly intensifying dry spells caused by fluctuations in precipitation, temperature, wind, and radiation. “This rise in temperature is expected to increase water demand, adversely affecting crops and putting extra pressure on already strained water resources,” the NDMC report stated.

The outlook for the last week of March indicates dry weather in most parts of the country, with some rain, wind, and thunderstorms expected in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Kashmir, and northern Balochistan on March 26. Isolated rain and hailstorms may also occur in lower Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and upper and southern Punjab.

With water shortages worsening and high temperatures persisting, the PMD has urged authorities to take precautionary measures to mitigate the impact of the drought, particularly in the agriculture and water management sectors.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert for widespread rainfall across Punjab between March 25 and 27, warning authorities to stay prepared for possible disruptions.

According to the Meteorological Department, most districts of Punjab are likely to receive rainfall during this period. Additionally, Murree, Galiyat, and other mountainous areas are expected to experience rain and snowfall. 

The affected districts include Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Attock, Chakwal, Sargodha, Mianwali, Khushab, Mandi Bahauddin, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Gujrat, and Sialkot.
In southern Punjab, the rainfall is likely to affect Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Bahawalpur, Khanewal, Layyah, Sahiwal, and Pakpattan.

PDMA issues alert to authorities

In response to the forecast, PDMA has alerted local administrations and rescue agencies across Punjab to stay on high alert and ensure safety measures are in place. The authority has urged residents to exercise caution, particularly in hilly and low-lying areas prone to flooding.

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has urged political leaders to put aside personal differences and unite against the rising threat of terrorism, which he described as a national security crisis.

Speaking at an Iftar dinner at the Governor House in Lahore, Bilawal noted the PPP's important role in national politics, emphasising the need for dialogue between the government and opposition to address national issues, particularly terrorism and economic instability.

Call for political unity

Bilawal pointed out that while terrorism is resurging in parts of the country, political parties remain divided. He stressed that terrorist organizations are actively disrupting the peace in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Pakistan cannot afford political instability at such a crucial time.

"We have defeated terrorism before, and we will defeat it again," Bilawal asserted, calling for a collective national effort to counter militancy. He also criticized political parties for prioritizing personal and partisan issues over the country’s challenges, urging them to focus on public welfare instead.

Offer to mediate between govt, opposition

During his address, Bilawal offered to play a role in bridging the gap between the government and opposition. He revealed that the PPP has offered Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif that it will do whatever it can to facilitate political dialogue, especially regarding national security concerns.

"The government should reach out to the political parties that did not attend the National Security Committee meeting," Bilawal suggested, emphasizing that these discussions are crucial for forming a national security strategy.

He further advised the prime minister to call another meeting, even after a month, to ensure that all political stakeholders are involved in addressing the issue of terrorism. "The threat of terrorism has become a national security crisis," he asserted. 

Criticism of opposition’s approach

Bilawal also took a veiled jab at the opposition, particularly the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), stating that their focus on securing the release of their leader should not come at the cost of addressing Pakistan’s real issues.

"People are struggling with poverty, unemployment, and terrorism, yet political divisions have made it difficult to form a consensus on national issues," he remarked. He appealed to opposition leaders to move beyond narrow-minded politics and work towards a united front for the greater good of the nation.

Bilawal also spoke about governance in Punjab, highlighting the importance of keeping Governor House accessible to the people. He emphasized that after the 18th Amendment, the Governor House may not have many resources, but the Punjab governor should still strive to win the people's trust and serve them with dedication.

"The Punjab governor should keep the doors of Governor House open for the public and rule over their hearts," he said, reinforcing the need for inclusive leadership.

Solutions

Bilawal concluded by stating that the PPP remains committed to addressing Pakistan’s pressing issues, including terrorism and the economic crisis. He reassured that his party will continue its efforts to find practical solutions and contribute positively to the government’s policies.

"As a responsible political party, we can provide constructive input to the government, and we also invite the opposition to abandon the politics of division," he said.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz conducted a surprise visit to Jinnah Hospital in Lahore, where she found several shortcomings in the hospital's administration.

Following a series of complaints from patients and their attendants regarding the unavailability of free medicines and essential medical tests, the chief minister took strict action, ordering the immediate suspension of the hospital’s principal and medical superintendent (MS).

The CM's sudden arrival at Jinnah Hospital exposed critical issues in the healthcare facility. During her inspection of the medicine store, she discovered that medicines were available in stock, yet patients in the emergency ward were being deprived of them. Expressing strong displeasure over the mismanagement, she reprimanded the hospital staff and authorities for failing to provide essential medical aid to those in need.

While interacting with patients and their families in the emergency ward, Maryam Nawaz inquired about the availability of medicines and medical tests. Many patients expressed their grievances, stating that they were forced to purchase medicines from outside despite hospital policies ensuring free medication.

Upon witnessing the situation firsthand, the chief minister took immediate action, holding hospital authorities accountable. She assured patients that the government is committed to improving public healthcare facilities and will not tolerate any mismanagement that affects patient welfare.

The Oriel School has expanded its footprint in Punjab with the inauguration of a new branch in Kot Abdul Malik.

Instead of a traditional VIP guest, the school management chose to honor one of its longest-serving educator—a female teacher who has been with the institution for over 22 years.

A terrorist assault on the Jhangi check post in the border area of Taunsa Sharif was successfully repelled by security forces earlier this week.

According to the police spokesperson, a group of 20 to 25 terrorists launched the attack from various directions, heavily armed with rocket launchers and modern automatic weapons.

In a statement, the spokesperson of the Punjab Police confirmed that the terrorists used sophisticated weaponry in their assault. However, the police personnel stationed at the check post responded swiftly, engaging in fierce gunfire, ultimately foiling the attack.

"The terrorists were forced to retreat due to our officers' timely and effective counterfire," said the spokesperson. "During the exchange of fire, the attackers suffered casualties, and we have started a search operation in the area to track down the fleeing terrorists."

The police spokesperson further revealed that the quick response force had been dispatched to the site to support the operation and secure the area. As of now, the gunfire had subsided, though intermittent exchanges had occurred throughout the day.

In response to the ongoing threat, the authorities have intensified efforts to locate and apprehend the terrorists involved in the attack.

Four labourers shot dead in Kalat, while four policemen martyred in Noshki.

According to details, four labourers were shot dead by unidentified assailants in the Mangochar area of Kalat district, Balochistan, while working on a tube well project, authorities confirmed.

According to Mangochar Assistant Commissioner Ali Gul Imrani, armed men on motorcycles opened fire at the labourers in the Malangzai location and fled the scene. The deceased workers, all hailing from Sadiqabad, Punjab, have been identified as Munawar Hussain, Zeeshan, Dilawar Hussain, and M. Amin.

The labourers were engaged in drilling a tube well for a local landowner, Abdul Ghafoor Langove, when the attack took place. Upon receiving reports of the incident, Levies personnel reached the site, collected evidence, and launched an investigation into the motive behind the killings.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has strongly condemned the terrorist attack on workers in Kalat. He prayed for the victims, and expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. He also stated that the nation stood in solidarity with the families of the victims during this difficult time.

The Punjab government on Saturday approved the release of more wheat from its reserves in an effort to stabilize the market and control flour prices across the province.

A notification issued by the Price Control and Commodities Management Department on Tuesday stated that the release price of government wheat has been set at Rs 2,900 per maund.

The decision is aimed at ensuring an adequate supply of wheat and preventing any artificial shortages.

Earlier, the Punjab cabinet had approved the release of 1.2 million metric tons of wheat, which has already been sold by the Food Department.

In light of the current market conditions, the government has decided to release additional stocks from its warehouses.

Officials believe that the move will help stabilise wheat and flour prices, preventing any undue inflationary pressure on consumers. The government has also instructed authorities to monitor the market closely and take strict action against hoarding or price manipulation.

The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) has announced a protest movement against the controversial six canals project on the Indus River, calling it an illegal and unconstitutional initiative. 

Senior PPP leader Nisar Khuhro stated that protests will be held across all district headquarters in Sindh on March 25 to oppose the project. 

Speaking to the media, Khuhro accused the Punjab government of allocating a budget for the canals despite claims that no such projects were being developed. He reiterated PPP’s stance, saying the party would fight against these canals on all constitutional forums, in legislative houses, and on the streets.

Khuhro specifically objected to the Cholistan Canal, arguing that it threatens Sindh’s water rights. He urged the people of Sindh to join the protests in large numbers, emphasizing that the PPP will go street by street and district by district to oppose these projects.

The PPP leader also took aim at political rivals, stating that while other parties criticize the PPP, they remain silent on projects that threaten Sindh’s water resources. He vowed that his party would use all available means to stop the construction of these canals.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched the next phase of her mega projects, "Ring of Lahore" and "Lungs of Lahore", aimed at restoring Lahore’s status as the City of Gardens.

Senior Punjab Minister Maryam Aurangzeb inaugurated the "Lungs of Lahore" project at the Shahdara entrance, marking the beginning of a massive tree plantation drive along both banks of the Ravi River. The project will see the planting of 30 million trees over 800 acres of land.

Additionally, 5 million trees will be planted across 814 acres of land along the BRB Canal, Lahore Canal, Hudiara Drain, and the M-11 and M-2 Motorways. A tree belt surrounding Lahore will also be established, covering 18 acres with over 7 million shade and fruit-bearing trees.

Under the "Plant for Pakistan" mega project, the government has set a target of planting 42.5 million trees.

The "Lungs of Lahore" initiative, which began on February 1, 2025, is expected to be completed by April 30, 2025, with a goal of 250,000 saplings. At New Bridge along the Ravi River, over 100,000 trees have already been planted on 30 out of 50 acres.

To ensure sustainability, every tree planted has been geo-tagged for continuous monitoring.

“These millions of trees will act as oxygen generators for Lahore,” said Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb. “With this initiative, Lahore will become a smog-free zone.”

She added that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s "Green Ring of Lahore" project will transform the city into a lush green paradise.

Calling on citizens to participate in the tree plantation drive, she emphasized, “Every tree planted is a step toward eliminating smog. A single tree is like a soldier fighting against pollution.”

A comprehensive plan was devised to administer polio drops during Eid to prevent the spread of the virus.

In a shocking incident in Patiala district, an Indian Army officer of colonel rank and his son were allegedly assaulted by Punjab Police personnel over a parking dispute.

The victim has been identified as Colonel Pushpinder Bath, who is currently stationed at the Indian Army Headquarters in New Delhi. The altercation took place on March 13 outside a roadside eatery near Government Rajindra Hospital in Patiala and was captured on CCTV. The footage has since gone viral on social media.

What happened?

The conflict reportedly began when police personnel, dressed in civilian clothes, asked Colonel Bath to move his vehicle. A verbal exchange ensued, which quickly escalated into a violent confrontation. The officers allegedly punched and kicked the colonel and his son before attacking them with baseball bats.

Both victims sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Conflicting claims

According to The Tribune, the police involved were on their way to the hospital after an encounter with kidnappers, during which a seven-year-old child was rescued and an accused was shot dead.

One of the policemen accused of the assault alleged that the colonel and his son were intoxicated and initiated the violence. “They were inebriated and attacked us,” he claimed.

Family’s statement

At a press conference in Patiala, Colonel Bath’s wife, Jaswinder Bath, recounted her version of the incident. She stated that while the family was eating outside their car and eating their food, police personnel asked her husband to move his vehicle to make space for theirs.

“When my husband objected to their language, one of them punched him. Later, all the police personnel thrashed my husband and my son, leaving them injured,” she alleged.

Police Response

Following the incident, an FIR was registered based on a statement from a dhaba owner, and an investigation is currently underway.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Patiala Dr. Nanak Singh confirmed that 12 police personnel have been suspended in connection with the assault. A departmental inquiry has been ordered, which is expected to conclude within 45 days.

Expressing regret over the incident, the SSP apologized on behalf of Punjab Police, stating, "We will probe the matter in detail, and justice will be done. We will not spare anyone." 

Punjab Higher Education Department (HED) has imposed a ban on mobile phone use in colleges across the province, restricting both students and teachers from using phones inside classrooms.

According to an official notification sent to all colleges, the decision aims to maintain a focused learning environment, as excessive mobile phone usage has been disrupting academic activities. The notification highlighted concerns that students frequently use social media apps during lectures, while teachers’ phone usage also affects the classroom atmosphere.

The district college directors have been instructed to strictly enforce the ban, with warnings of action against non-compliance.

Punjab Home Department has issued an appeal for the release of indigent prisoners who have completed their sentences but remain behind bars due to unpaid fines or compensation.

Philanthropists are encouraged to contribute their Zakat to pay off these prisoners' fines or blood money, allowing their release before Eid.

According to the department’s spokesperson, around 150 prisoners have completed their sentences but are still incarcerated due to unpaid dues amounting to Rs100 million.

Last year, Rs170 million was paid to secure the release of 226 prisoners.

Individuals can contribute by depositing funds into the Punjab Prison Foundation’s account, ensuring the release of prisoners in time for Eid.

Additionally, fines can be deposited in a bank on behalf of a prisoner, with the challan form submitted to the relevant jail for processing.

The Sindh Assembly has unanimously approved a resolution presented by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, rejecting the construction of six new canals, including the Cholistan Canal.

The resolution strongly opposes these projects, declaring them a violation of the 1991 Water Accord and an attempt to deprive Sindh of its rightful share of water.

Addressing the assembly, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah warned that Sindh would not compromise on its water rights and vowed to resist any illegal water distribution. He criticized the federal government for planning the construction of new canals, emphasizing that such moves are unconstitutional and unacceptable. 

"Every attempt to snatch Sindh's water rights will be met with a befitting response," he asserted.

Shah accused the federal government of using the canal projects as a political tool, stating that Punjab and the federation cannot justify these constructions.

"The federation only talks about these canals to put Sindh under pressure," he claimed. He further questioned the feasibility of these projects, highlighting that there is no surplus water available to divert into the new canals. "If there is no water, how will it go into the canal?" he asked.

The CM stressed that the Sindh government has already submitted objections to the Council of Common Interests (CCI) and reiterated that no canal can be built without its approval. "Until the CCI meets and resolves this matter, no new canal should be constructed," he stated.

Shah also reminded the assembly about historical agreements on water distribution, particularly the 1945 Sindh-Punjab Agreement, which ensured an equitable share of water between the provinces. He accused the federal government of forcibly imposing the 1991 Water Accord on Sindh and called for its strict implementation.

Murad Ali Shah also highlighted past resistance against controversial water projects, recalling that the PPP opposed the Greater Thal Canal and Kalabagh Dam.

"We have always stood against such unjust projects, and this time will be no different," he affirmed.

Additionally, Shah criticized the Punjab government for misleading statements about the Cholistan Canal. "They claim they will not take water from the Indus, but their budget allocations tell a different story," he said, referring to the Punjab government’s previous allocation of Rs. 1 million for the canal, which was later withdrawn.

He thanked all political parties in the Sindh Assembly for supporting the resolution and stressed that this was a collective effort to safeguard Sindh's water rights. "I want all members' names to be included in the resolution alongside mine," he said.

The Sindh government has vowed to mobilize public support against any unlawful water projects and urged the federal government to hold immediate discussions with all stakeholders. "Public resistance will be organized against any illegal distribution of water," Shah declared.

Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chairman of PPP, also voiced his strong opposition, stating that extracting more canals from the Indus River is akin to "playing with fire." He warned that such decisions could have severe consequences and deepen inter-provincial tensions.

The Sindh Assembly session was later adjourned until 2:30pm the next day.

Eid al-Fitr 2025 is expected to bring an extended holiday period for students across Punjab, with the break likely to begin on March 29 and last until April 6, 2025.

The announcement followed insights from the Ruet-e-Hilal Research Council, which confirmed that the crescent moon would be visible in most parts of Pakistan on the evening of March 30, indicating that Eid al-Fitr would likely be observed on March 31.

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee was set to convene on Ramadan 29, which fell on Sunday, March 30, for the official moon sighting. Once the moon is confirmed, the holiday period for students is expected to vary based on the sighting of the Shawwal moon.

According to established practices, the provincial government announces three days of holidays, in alignment with the federal government's schedule for Eid each year. If the Shawal moon is sighted on March 30, the holidays would last five days, from Monday, March 31 to Wednesday, April 2, including the weekend.

However, if the Shawal moon is not visible on March 30, the holy month of Ramadan would extend to 30 days, pushing the holidays to begin on April 1 and last until April 3.

In such a case, with the inclusion of the Monday holiday on March 31, the break could extend to six days.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted rain and thunderstorms in the upper regions of the country on Thursday (today), with snowfall expected over high-altitude areas.

According to the PMD’s daily weather update, "Rain-wind or thunderstorms [with snow over the high mountains] is expected at isolated places in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad, and upper Punjab."

The Met Office further stated that a shallow westerly wave is affecting the upper parts of the country. While most regions are expected to experience dry and partly cloudy weather, rain is anticipated in several cities over the next two days.

Showers have been forecast in various parts of Balochistan, including Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Mastung, Pishin, Qilla Abdullah, Qilla Saifullah, Chagai, Nushki, Barkhan, Khuzdar, Harnai, Zhob, and Sherani.

In Punjab, rain is expected in Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Bahawalnagar, Okara, Bhakkar, Layyah, Kot Addu, Rahim Yar Khan, and Multan, Faisalabad, Lahore; and Gujranwala, Sheikhipura while parts of Sindh, including Kashmore, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, and Larkana, are also likely to receive precipitation. The forecast extends to Sahiwal, Pakpattan, and Khanewal.

Past 24-hour weather conditions

On Tuesday, partly cloudy weather prevailed across most parts of the country, with scattered rain, wind, and thunderstorms recorded in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad, and the Pothohar region.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa received significant rainfall, with Cherat recording 14mm and Upper Dir 12mm. In Kashmir, Muzaffarabad saw 7mm of rain, while Murree in Punjab recorded 4mm and Islamabad 3mm. Skardu in Gilgit-Baltistan received 5mm, whereas Nokkundi in Balochistan recorded 1mm.

The lowest temperatures were recorded in Leh at -3°C, while Gupis and Parachinar reported -1°C.

The price of sugar continues to rise sharply, reaching Rs180 per kg, leaving citizens frustrated as they struggle with increasing costs.

Over the past ten days, sugar prices have surged by Rs15 per kg, making it a burden for households ahead of Ramadan. Concerned citizens lament that even sweet beverages might become a luxury during the holy month.

"At this rate, we might have to drink unsweetened sherbet during Ramadan," a local resident complained.

In the wholesale market, a 50kg sugar sack has increased by Rs1,000, now selling at Rs8,400. Retailers fear that prices may rise even further in the coming weeks.

"If the current trend continues, sugar will become even more expensive in the coming days," a shopkeeper warned.

Wholesale sugar traders have attributed the price hike to increased exports and urged the government to regulate supply and demand instead of prioritizing sugar mill interests. 

The Punjab Home Department has issued a directive to include "Good Touch, Bad Touch" awareness in school curricula as part of efforts to prevent child abuse incidents across the province.

In an official communication to the School Education Department, provincial authorities emphasized the need to incorporate personal safety education into early classroom instruction. The directive specifically calls for age-appropriate content that teaches children to identify appropriate and inappropriate physical contact.

"Teaching children about personal safety has become a necessity in today's environment," stated the official correspondence. The document outlines plans to develop modules that explain physical boundaries in a manner suitable for young students.

The initiative will focus on empowering children with knowledge about reporting mechanisms for inappropriate behavior, both at home and in public spaces. Education officials have been instructed to collaborate with child protection experts to develop appropriate teaching materials.

"Children who experience sexual abuse may suffer lifelong trauma," the communication noted, highlighting the preventive nature of the educational intervention. The Home Department stressed that children should be taught not to fear potential abusers but rather to expose such individuals.

According to provincial authorities, this curriculum addition represents a protective measure designed to safeguard vulnerable children. The Home Department is simultaneously developing a broader awareness campaign through the Child Protection and Welfare Bureau focusing on the "Good Touch, Bad Touch" concept.

The Directorate of Drug Control has ordered an immediate ban on the use of a private company's injection across Punjab following a drug reaction incident at Mayo Hospital.

According to the official directive, all pharmacies across the province have been instructed to halt the sale and administration of the affected injection due to potential health risks.

The notification states that the use of injection "Vexa" and solution "Neutroline" must be stopped immediately as a precautionary measure. The specific batch of the injection suspected to be harmful has also been prohibited from use until further notice.

The decision has been taken in the interest of patient safety, and the ban will remain in place until laboratory test reports confirm the safety of the drugs, the Directorate of Drug Control confirmed.

Amid a critical shortage of medicines in several government hospitals across Punjab, the finance department has released Rs3.59 billion to address the crisis.

The funds have been allocated to 30 government hospitals across the province, ensuring the supply of essential medicines to patients in need.

The Punjab Finance Department has issued an official letter to the health secretary regarding the release of funds. A spokesperson from the health department confirmed that these funds were previously stuck in the budget but have now been allocated to facilitate hospitals.

Ensuring medicine availability

The shortage of medicines had put immense pressure on hospitals, affecting patient care across Punjab. Health officials have assured that the funds will be utilized efficiently to meet the growing healthcare demands in Punjab’s public hospitals. 

A resolution seeking the introduction of a federal-style parliamentary system in Punjab has been drafted and is set to be presented in the Punjab Assembly today.

The resolution calls for the establishment of a Senate-like upper house in Punjab, similar to the federal structure. It has been prepared by PML-N’s Samiullah, PPP’s Ali Haider, and other assembly members.

According to official statistics, Punjab has a population of 124 million, making it larger than 171 countries worldwide. The resolution further states that only 11 countries in the world have a population greater than Punjab’s.

The resolution emphasizes the need for representation from all sectors of society and experts in the province’s governance and decision-making processes. However, the current constitutional framework does not accommodate such a system.

The resolution urges the federal government to amend the Constitution to introduce a bicameral system in Punjab. It proposes the establishment of a Punjab Council, modeled after an upper house, alongside the Punjab Assembly’s lower house. The Punjab Police thwarted yet another attack by heavily armed foreign terrorists on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa-Punjab border, marking the second such assault within 24 hours and the third this week.

According to a Punjab Police spokesperson, a group of 20 to 25 militants launched an attack on the Lakhani border post using rocket launchers and other advanced weaponry. However, security personnel successfully repelled the assailants, forcing them to flee.

The statement added that the terrorists were identified in advance using thermal imaging cameras, enabling the police to take swift action.

Inspector General (IG) Punjab, in a statement, commended the bravery of the police force, asserting that "every soldier of the Punjab Police is fully committed to eliminating terrorism and will not allow the enemy to succeed in its nefarious designs."

It may be noted that a similar attack was foiled at the same location a day earlier, when 15 to 20 militants attempted to storm the checkpoint in the early hours of the morning.

The assailants had targeted the post from multiple directions with rocket launchers and heavy firearms. Punjab Police reported that the attackers suffered significant casualties as a result of effective retaliation.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued an alert warning of heavy rains across the province during Ramadan, with showers expected in most districts from March 9 to 16.

According to a PDMA spokesperson, rain and snowfall are predicted in Murree, Galiyat, and other mountainous regions. The agency has urged residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel in extreme weather conditions.

PDMA DG Irfan Ali Kathia has instructed commissioners and deputy commissioners across Punjab to remain on high alert. Additionally, alerts have been issued to relevant departments, including WASA, Rescue 1122, the irrigation department, and the livestock dpartment, to ensure preparedness for any emergencies.

The forecast predicts significant rainfall in Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Attock, Chakwal, Sargodha, Mianwali, Khushab, and Mandi Bahauddin. Lahore, Sheikhupura, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, Narowal, Faisalabad, and Toba Tek Singh are also expected to experience heavy showers.

Further down south, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Okara, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Khanewal, Layyah, and Bhakkar are also likely to receive rainfall.

Authorities have advised citizens to stay updated with weather forecasts, avoid traveling in hazardous conditions, and take necessary precautions to prevent any untoward incidents during the rainy spell.

Dry weather continues to prevail across Punjab, including the provincial capital, as temperatures gradually rise, the Meteorological Department said on Saturday.

According to the Met Office, most districts of Punjab, including Lahore, will witness cloudy conditions on Sunday and Monday; however, the likelihood of rainfall remains low.

Experts have predicted that a rain-bearing system will enter Pakistan on March 12, bringing showers to several districts, including Lahore, on March 12 and 13.

Meanwhile, Lahore recorded a minimum temperature of 17°C on Saturday, while the maximum temperature is expected to reach 27°C.

The dry spell has led to an increase in temperatures, with citizens experiencing warm days. However, meteorologists anticipate a change in weather conditions once the system moves in next week.

Punjab Police thwarted a major attack by militants on the Lakhani check post near the Punjab-Khyber Pakhtunkhwa border in the early hours of Saturday, officials said.

According to Punjab Police, a group of 15 to 20 heavily armed militants launched a coordinated assault on the security post at dawn, using rocket launchers and other heavy weaponry.

The attackers attempted to storm the check post from multiple directions but were detected through thermal imaging cameras before they could advance further.

In a swift response, security personnel engaged the attackers, forcing them to retreat. Officials confirmed that the militants suffered heavy casualties, though the exact number was not disclosed. No injuries were reported among security personnel.

This marks the second attempted attack on the Lakhani check post within a week. Six days earlier, another assault was repelled in a similar manner.

Inspector General of Punjab Police stated that the force has successfully foiled 19 attacks by militant groups in recent months. "The vigilance of our officers has ensured that these elements fail in their nefarious designs," he said.

Security has been tightened in the region, with authorities vowing to continue their counter-terror operations to eliminate militant threats.

Punjab Home Department has released a list of banned organizations and unregistered charitable institutions, urging citizens not to donate to any entity that is not registered with the Punjab Charity Commission.

According to the department, providing financial aid to banned outfits involved in terrorism or anti-state activities is a punishable offense under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997. Officials have stressed that charitable donations should only go to verified and registered organizations to ensure they reach the right beneficiaries rather than being misused.

The Home Department reiterated that all charitable institutions in Punjab must be registered with the Punjab Charity Commission to operate legally. Citizens are advised to verify organizations before donating to prevent funds from reaching extremist groups.

The Lahore Safari Zoo will remain closed for 15 days from March 11 due to ongoing construction work and annual repairs, according to a spokesperson.

A ban on the use of eight unsafe medicines was imposed in Punjab, following a directive from the Drug Controller chief.

According to details, the medical stores and pharmacies across the region were instructed to immediately cease the sale of these medicines, and drug inspectors were ordered to confiscate all existing stock.

The Chief Drug Controller of Punjab took the drastic step, identifying several medicines as unfit for use. Among the banned substances were Flaygel, a tablet used for bacterial infections, which was declared substandard. In a related directive, Tramadol, an injection commonly used for pain relief in various medical conditions, was also deemed harmful to health.

Metronidazole, an injection used for bacterial infections, was also classified as unsafe. The Chief Drug Controller ordered immediate enforcement of these measures across the province.

Meanwhile, customs officials in Karachi seized seven batches of unregistered painkillers, with further action expected. The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) also issued a ban on the use of seven specific batches of these medicines, underscoring their potential risks to public health.

Under this initiative, 170 tourist sites and trails across Punjab will be developed, restored, and renovated to promote the province’s cultural and historical heritage.

As part of the initiative, the Punjab government is set to launch the province’s first-ever tourism app, ‘Magnificent Punjab’, which will provide virtual tours of 170 tourist spots.

The app will offer various tourism-related services, including travel bookings, hotel reservations, online food delivery, and additional tourism services. It will also feature chatbot integration to provide instant travel-related information to users.

The tourism plan focuses on promoting religious, historical, and archaeological tourism across Punjab. To offer visitors an immersive cultural experience, the government will establish ‘Tourist Villages’ in key locations.

Additionally, Punjab’s first-ever tourism trails will be developed, including the Walled City of Lahore, Mall Road, GT Road’s Mughal heritage, and Sikh tourism sites in Eminabad and Gujranwala.

The Gandhara Trail will highlight historic sites such as Taxila Museum, Dharmarajika Stupa, Julian Monastery, Sirkap, and Giri Fort. Special religious tourism trails will be created to connect Gurdwaras and historic churches, while Multan’s Qila Kohna Qasim Bagh will be restored as a symbol of the Indus Valley Civilization. Similarly, Uch Sharif will get a dedicated pilgrimage trail, and eco-tourism projects will be launched in Changa Manga Forest Park and Lal Suhanra National Park.

Eligibility, selection process for Punjab CM Free Solar Panel Scheme

The initiative prioritizes consumers with lower electricity consumption, aiming to provide solar panels to those most affected by power costs. Following the completion of the registration phase, digital balloting was held to ensure transparency.

According to CM Maryam Nawaz, a staggering 861,000 applicants registered for the scheme. The selected consumers will be verified physically to ensure the legitimacy of applications before the solar panel installation begins.

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by July 2024, while the installation of solar panels for selected applicants will commence by the end of March.

To assist applicants, the Punjab government has also established a dedicated helpline for queries related to the scheme. Moreover, to curb potential misuse, all solar panels and inverters will be linked to consumers’ computerized national identity cards (CNICs), ensuring that the allocated equipment reaches the rightful recipients.

This initiative aligns with Punjab’s broader goal of promoting renewable energy and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. With electricity prices continuing to rise, the scheme is expected to provide substantial financial relief to thousands of households across the province.

Following two days of continuous rain, a thick blanket of fog covered Attock city and its surrounding areas this morning, causing severe difficulties for commuters.

The drop in temperature has led to an increase in cold intensity, making travel conditions challenging. The entire region remained shrouded in dense fog, disrupting visibility and daily activities.

Attock is often referred to as the frontier district of Punjab because it is located at the northwestern edge of the province, bordering Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK).

Its strategic location near the Indus River historically made it a gateway between Punjab and the tribal regions.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has initiated emergency measures to tackle smog and air pollution, including a large-scale afforestation drive under the Chief Minister’s Plant for Pakistan Initiative. The plan aims to plant 42.5 million trees across 48,368 acres in the province.

According to Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, 7.361 million trees will be planted over 8,496 acres during the 2024-25 fiscal year, with a budget allocation of Rs. 1,800 million for the year. So far, Rs. 1,085 million has been spent, covering 60% of the estimated cost.

As part of the Spring Plantation Drive, 5.966 million trees will be planted on 6,637 acres across multiple districts, including Lahore, Kasur, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Murree, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, and Muzaffargarh. More than 300 locations have been identified for afforestation.

The project includes planting Moringa, Chir, Neem, Kikar, Sheesham, Sars, Bakain, Semal, Arjun, and various fruit-bearing trees. The Chief Minister’s Plant for Pakistan Initiative is expected to cost Rs. 8,000 million in total.

Under this initiative, forests, riverbanks, canals, roadsides, Potohar Plateau, Murree, and sandy regions will be transformed into green zones. So far, 2.73 million trees have been planted over 4,000 acres, according to the senior provincial minister.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Saturday announced a special bus service for rural women.

The provincial government has approved the launch of a dedicated bus service from tehsil to the district headquarters, with plans for an inter-village transport system also under consideration.

Additionally, a phased rollout of a mass transit system comprising 25 buses for remote districts is under review.

Chairing a meeting on Tuesday, the chief minister directed authorities to formulate a comprehensive transportation plan for rural women, including subsidies for female passengers.

She stressed the need for an efficient and modern transport system that caters to women in villages, acknowledging the difficulties they face in commuting.

“It is painful to see rural women travelling in uncomfortable conditions. A proper transport system will boost their confidence and facilitate students and female patients,” she said.

The Punjab government has taken a significant step by amending the Motor Vehicles Ordinance 1965, allowing vehicles registered in other provinces to be re-registered in Punjab.

The implementation of this initiative is set to begin next month, with necessary rules and SOPs already finalized and the registration modules in the final stages of preparation.

According to excise officials, vehicle owners from Sindh, Islamabad, and other provinces will now be able to re-register their vehicles in Punjab after obtaining a No-Objection Certificate (NOC) from their respective provincial Motor Registration Authorities. The re-registration fee will be significantly lower than the new registration fee, making the process more affordable for vehicle owners.

Additionally, Punjab will accept token taxes paid in Sindh and Islamabad, eliminating the need for double taxation. Officials further stated that e-Pay will be introduced in the next phase to facilitate digital transactions for re-registration.

Punjab Excise and Taxation Director General Umar Sher Chattha highlighted that this move will boost revenue for the province while simplifying the registration process for citizens.

However, vehicle owners and car dealers have expressed mixed reactions, with some welcoming the decision as a convenient option while others remain concerned about potential procedural hurdles.

More than 100 personnel of Lahore police have been dismissed from service for refusing to perform security duties during the movement of foreign teams for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

According to police sources, the dismissed officials, primarily from the Anti-Riot Force (ARF), were removed from their positions following directives from the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Operations. The personnel were reportedly assigned to provide security for teams traveling between Qaddafi Stadium and designated hotels but either remained absent or outright refused to take up their responsibilities.

A formal report on their dismissal was registered under the directives of the Superintendent of Police (SP) ARF. The official record now includes detailed documentation of the personnel who failed to report for duty.

Authorities have maintained a strict stance on the issue, stating that there is no room for negligence when it comes to the security of international events.

“Those who exhibit carelessness or dereliction of duty will not be tolerated in the department,” a senior official remarked.

The dismissed personnel were reportedly associated with various wings of the police force. Their refusal to perform duty at such a crucial event has raised concerns about discipline within the department, especially ahead of a high-profile international tournament.

This move follows a broader trend of strict disciplinary measures within law enforcement agencies. Recently, 15 Levies personnel in Balochistan were dismissed for allegedly surrendering arms to terrorists, signaling a wider crackdown on perceived breaches of duty across security forces.

The Punjab Home Department on Tuesday constituted a Law Reforms Committee to review and amend outdated criminal laws, aiming to modernize them in line with contemporary challenges.

A notification issued by the department stated that the committee would draft amendments to key laws, including the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) 1898, the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) 1860, and the Qanun-e-Shahadat Order 1984. Additionally, it will work on drafting a National Security Law to address evolving security concerns.

The proposed amendments will focus on crime prevention, law enforcement effectiveness, and maintaining public order, with a particular emphasis on protecting women and children.

The committee will also review laws related to counter-terrorism, cybercrime, and cybersecurity, ensuring they align with modern scientific techniques and contemporary legal requirements.

The Law Reforms Committee will be headed by DIG Kamran Adil, while Additional Secretary (Judicial) Home Department Imran Hussain Ranjha will serve as the secretary.

Other members include Deputy Director Law Department Muhammad Yunus, Additional Advocate General Punjab Hassan Khalid, and a representative from the Prosecutor General Punjab’s office.

The committee has been directed to submit its recommendations to the Home Department within three months.

Several parts of Punjab, northern areas, and Balochistan witnessed heavy rainfall on Tuesday as a strong westerly weather system swept across the country, bringing downpours, thunderstorms, and snowfall in mountainous regions.

The Meteorological Department has forecast more rain in the coming days, warning of possible disruptions due to inclement weather.

Downpour in Punjab

Heavy rain lashed multiple cities in Punjab, including Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, Sargodha, and Rawalpindi, turning roads into pools of water and disrupting routine activities. Intermittent showers accompanied by strong winds were also reported in Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Mianwali, and Khanewal. The Met Dept has predicted that rainfall will persist in these regions for the next few days, with a risk of urban flooding in low-lying areas.

Snowfall and rain in northern areas

The northern regions of Pakistan, including Murree, Galiyat, Swat, Mansehra, and Abbottabad, received a fresh spell of rain and snowfall, further lowering temperatures. In Dir, Chitral, Kohistan, and Shangla, heavy snowfall blanketed roads, making travel difficult. Authorities have urged tourists and locals to exercise caution as slippery roads and landslides pose risks in hilly areas.

The westerly system has also brought torrential rains to Balochistan, affecting cities like Quetta, Chaman, and Zhob. Heavy downpours in the upper areas have resulted in snowfall, while hailstorms were reported in several districts.

The ongoing rain has disrupted electricity and communication services in various parts of the province, adding to the residents’ difficulties.

The PMD has warned that the current spell of rain will likely continue until March 2, with more wet weather expected across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Authorities have advised citizens to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel in areas prone to landslides and flash floods.

Prisoners across Punjab will be able to watch the much-anticipated Pakistan-India cricket match, as the provincial government has made special arrangements for live screening in all 44 jails, including Adiala Jail, officials confirmed on Sunday.

According to the Punjab Home Department spokesperson, special measures have been taken to facilitate inmates, including those in children’s jails, allowing them to watch the high-voltage contest.

Punjab Home Secretary Noorul Amin Mengal has directed Inspector General (IG) Prisons to ensure proper arrangements for the live broadcast.

As part of the Punjab government’s Prison Reforms Policy, authorities have been focusing on engaging inmates in constructive activities to rehabilitate them into society.

In addition to sports screenings, industrial units and libraries have been set up in various jails to provide skill-based learning and educational resources.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reiterated his commitment to the development of southern Punjab, announcing the construction of a cancer hospital in Dera Ghazi Khan and a new university in Rajanpur.

Speaking at a public gathering in DG Khan, he emphasized that development had become the destiny of Pakistan, whose economy is improving, and vowed to continue working tirelessly for the nation’s progress. 

"Inflation in the country was at its peak when we took power. Now, inflation has come down to its lowest level during our government," Sharif commented, adding that 

PM Shehbaz Sharif highlighted key economic improvements under his government, stating:

• Inflation has dropped from 40% to 4%.
• The policy rate has been reduced from 22% to 12%.
• The economy is now on the path to stability and growth.

He credited Nawaz Sharif’s vision for Pakistan’s progress, stating that Punjab’s rapid development took place under his leadership. He also praised Maryam Nawaz for her efforts in public service and welfare projects across the province.

Support for farmers, students

The PM announced the continuation of key initiatives, including the distribution of Kisan Cards for farmers and laptops for students in Punjab. He emphasized that his government is prioritizing agriculture and industrial development to boost the country’s economy. 

South Punjab won't be left behind

Shehbaz Sharif assured the people of southern Punjab that they will not be neglected in national development plans. He promised a network of hospitals across Punjab to improve healthcare access and reiterated his government’s dedication to uplifting the region.

Pakistan’s global standing, political challenges

The PM addressed foreign policy and internal politics, stating that he has always prioritized Pakistan’s interests in his international engagements. He claimed that foreign powers are trying to harm Pakistan but assured the nation that Pakistan will overcome all challenges. "We will never forget the sacrifices of Pakistan's armed forces," he stressed. 

Criticizing political opponents, Shehbaz Sharif said, “A politician has always accused me, but I have always focused on work.” He condemned protests and sit-ins, stating that they harm the country’s progress. "Conspiracies are being hatched day and night to destroy Pakistan," he regretted. 

Vision for future

PM Shehbaz Sharif expressed his determination to make Pakistan a global success, boldly stating, "If we do not surpass India in development, I'll change my name from Shehbaz Sharif!" He reassured the people that his government will continue to work day and night to strengthen Pakistan’s economy, industry, and agriculture.

Authorities have finalised extensive traffic and security arrangements ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025 match between Australia and England at Gaddafi Stadium, with over 12,000 police personnel deployed to ensure safety.

According to Lahore’s Chief Traffic Officer (CTO), more than 1,000 traffic police officials will be on duty during the match, with strict enforcement against wrong parking. Twenty forklifts and four breakdown vehicles will be on standby to handle any violations.

Traffic plan for spectators

Traffic authorities have devised a detailed parking plan for spectators. Fans arriving from Defence will park at the Central Business District (CBD) by turning left from Centre Point at Firdous Market.

Those using Ferozepur Road will park near Government College Gulberg, while visitors from Defence and Cantt will use Liberty Park after taking routes via Hussain Chowk or Sherpao Bridge.

The CTO assured that no roads will be permanently closed, and major arteries such as Mall Road, Jail Road, Canal Road, Ferozepur Road, and Main Boulevard Gulberg will remain open.

Spectators have been urged to park only in designated areas to avoid inconvenience. Live traffic updates will be available via the Rasta App and Rasta FM 88.6.

Security measures beefed up

Punjab Police has put in place a comprehensive security plan for the match. Inspector General (IG) Punjab, Dr Usman Anwar, has directed stringent security measures to safeguard players, officials, and spectators.

Over 12,000 officers, including specialized units such as the Dolphin Squad, Police Response Unit, and Elite teams, will be deployed across key locations. Snipers will be stationed on high-rise buildings surrounding the stadium, while Safe City cameras will monitor all routes and sensitive areas.

Authorities have assured that all necessary precautions are being taken to ensure a smooth and secure event for cricket fans attending the highly anticipated encounter between Australia and England.

Punjab University’s Faculty of Computing & Information Technology (FCIT) organised its 14^th Career Fair on Friday, February 21, 2025.

The event was sponsored by Stewart Pakistan. More than 60 leading IT companies from software industry set up their stalls to hire graduates of FCIT from a batch of around 500 coming from domains of computer science, software engineering and information technology.

 These product and service based IT companies, contributed USD 3.2 billion to the economy of Pakistan in the year 2024, marking a robust 24 percent increase from the previous fiscal year.

Students at the career fair were also enlightened about scholarships and entrepreneurship.

The Punjab government has introduced a new pension policy under which both government employees and the government will contribute to a pension fund.

The Punjab Finance Department has issued a notification after an amendment to the Pension Rules, implementing the Contribution Pension Scheme across the province, which will take immediate effect. As per the new pension scheme, both the employee and the government will contribute to the pension fund on a monthly basis.

According to the notification, this new scheme will be applicable to employees recruited after 2024 under the Punjab Civil Servants Amendment Ordinance 2023. Under the new system, a fixed amount will be deducted from an employee’s salary and deposited into a pension account, while the government will contribute an equal amount.

The accumulated pension funds will be invested through a qualified pension fund manager, ensuring financial sustainability. Employees will have the option to choose between a conventional or Sharia-compliant pension fund. Upon retirement, they will be able to receive a monthly income from the pension fund or withdraw their savings under specific conditions.

The Punjab Pension Fund and the Punjab Accountant General will be responsible for monitoring and regulating the scheme to ensure transparency and efficiency.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced an ambitious plan to establish Punjab as a regional and international hub for history, heritage, and tourism.

Under the newly launched "Magnificent Punjab" mega tourism project, 170 historical sites will be transformed into world-class tourist destinations.

The initiative includes 101 gurdwaras and 53 churches, with comprehensive mapping of locations already completed. Punjab’s first-ever comprehensive tourism policy has also been prepared, and a summary for the establishment of the Punjab Tourism and Heritage Authority has been submitted for cabinet approval.

In a major development, Rs. 240 million has been allocated to modernize the 131-year-old Lahore Museum, ensuring the preservation of Punjab’s 1,000-year-old history in collaboration with UNESCO.

Additionally, a digital tourism app has been introduced to provide visitors with essential travel information, guidance, and services directly on their mobile phones.

Revamping Punjab’s Historical & Cultural Landscape

For the first time, Punjab has been divided into nine tourism zones, ensuring the structured promotion of its historical and cultural heritage. Restoration projects include:

• "Charming Lahore" Project: Rs. 400 million allocated for preserving Mall Road’s historical significance.
• Fort Kohna Qasim Bagh Restoration: Tender process completed, funds released.
• Uch Sharif Pilgrimage Route: Special pathways and facilities for visitors.

CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized that protecting history, heritage, and culture is a responsibility to future generations, ensuring Punjab's legacy shines globally. She stated, “Punjab has been home to multiple religions, civilizations, and cultures. We will showcase the vibrant heritage of the land of five rivers.”

To accelerate progress, the restoration of historical sites has been integrated into the Annual Development Plan, with tenders set to begin in July.

The newly constructed bikers' lane on Ferozepur Road has become a major inconvenience for traffic. The paint, applied at a cost of over Rs. 11 crore, washed away in the rain due to poor quality.

Several sections of the bikers' lane have faded away with rainwater, raising concerns over the quality of materials used in the project. Despite the issues, TEPA has failed to address the challenges caused by the bikers' lane.

No alternative plan for buses at stops was provided, and there is no proper drainage system to prevent water accumulation. As a result, traffic jams on Ferozepur Road have become a daily occurrence.

LDA Takes Notice of Deteriorating Biker Lane Paint in Lahore

Lahore Development Authority (LDA) director general took notice of the poor-quality paint used on the biker lane.

The DG has ordered an inquiry and directed the Chief Engineer to investigate the matter.

According to sources, the company responsible for the painting will not receive payment for the project.

Furthermore, the LDA Chief Engineer stated that the same company will not be assigned any future projects.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has announced a free laptop scheme for students across the province, urging the Punjab government to follow KP’s welfare model in providing public services.

Addressing a gathering, Gandapur emphasized that KP had provided health insurance to its entire population through the Health Card Plus program and was now extending life insurance benefits. He called on the Punjab chief minister to implement similar initiatives for its entire population.

"We provided health coverage to our entire population, and now we are offering life insurance as well. Punjab should also ensure these facilities for all its people," he stated. He further said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would also distribute laptops as per the same proportion of population that Punjab did.

Economic performance

Highlighting KP’s economic performance, Gandapur claimed that despite financial challenges, his government had increased provincial revenue by 55% and maintained a budget surplus of Rs176 billion. 

"Punjab should also increase its income from 12% to 55%. We are the only province that successfully achieved the IMF target," Gandapur claimed. He contrasted this with Punjab, alleging that the province failed to meet its Rs300 billion surplus target and instead incurred a deficit of Rs146 billion.

Social welfare programs

Gandapur also announced that the KP government is facilitating the marriages of 4,000 deserving girls, providing them Rs200,000 each as financial assistance.

"Punjab’s performance is not even 1% of ours. I am ready for a debate on this," he remarked, throwing an open challenge to Punjab’s leadership.

The prolonged threat of drought has subsided as widespread rainfall drenched various parts of the country, bringing much-needed relief to both the environment and the agricultural sector.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted that the rains may continue for another two days.  

Several areas, including the federal capital, received rainfall, turning the weather pleasant. Light and heavy showers were recorded in multiple cities across Punjab, including Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujar Khan, Vehari, and Mailsi, among others.  

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), the downpour led to a sharp drop in temperature, particularly in Peshawar, Charsadda, Mardan, and Dir. The hill stations of Nathiagali and Ayubia witnessed snowfall, forcing the closure of key routes, including Abbottabad-Murree Road and roads leading to Galiyat.  

Meanwhile, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) also received rain and snowfall, blanketing Neelum Valley, Leepa Valley, Jagran, Shuntar, Garhas, and Keel in white. The snowfall disrupted transportation, with several key roads in upper regions becoming impassable.  

Balochistan also witnessed rain in several districts, including Kalat, Sohbatpur, Chaman, Daki, Sibi, Kohlu, and Qila Abdullah. Light snowfall in Qila Saifullah and Ziarat further intensified the cold.  

Agricultural impact  

Agricultural experts have termed the rainfall as highly beneficial for winter crops. In Bhakkar, an area previously affected by drought, farmers are optimistic about a boost in rain-fed crops, particularly gram. Similarly, in Pind Dadan Khan, Burewala, and Sarai Mughal, the rainfall is expected to have a positive impact on wheat cultivation.  

Experts further noted that the rain would help restore moisture levels in the soil and contribute to healthier crop yields. It is also expected to reduce seasonal illnesses, including colds and flu.  

Power outages and disruptions  

Despite the relief, the downpour also led to power disruptions in several areas. In Bachiana, residents experienced eight-hour-long power outages, while in Rajana and its suburbs, tripping of feeders affected the electricity supply.  

The weather system has also caused temporary blackouts in other parts of the country, with Islamabad and Rawalpindi experiencing thunderstorms that led to sporadic electricity failures.  

More rain expected  

According to the PMD, the ongoing wet spell is likely to persist for another 48 hours, with intermittent rain and thunderstorms expected in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and northern areas.  

The first winter rain in Swabi has replenished moisture in the soil, alleviating concerns about dry conditions for the upcoming planting season. The rain is also expected to provide a much-needed boost to water reservoirs across the country.  

While the rains have brought relief from drought fears, authorities have urged caution in snow-covered regions, warning of slippery roads and travel disruptions. Residents in affected areas have been advised to take necessary precautions as the wet spell continues.

The Punjab government decided on Wednesday to enforce the one-dish policy with strict measures, expanding its application to weddings held at farmhouses and private homes.

The decision was made in response to the growing concerns over the financial burden on parents, particularly those from lower-income backgrounds.

Moreover, the Punjab's chief minister had expressed his strong disapproval of violations of the one-dish policy.

He highlighted that multiple dishes at weddings only added unnecessary financial strain on families, especially those with limited resources.

"If any violations occur, the responsible Deputy Commissioner will be held accountable," the chief minister stated.

The chief minister had instructed all the deputy commissioners and relevant authorities to closely monitor wedding events and ensure the strict enforcement of the one-dish policy.

Light drizzle and cool winds have brought a refreshing change to Lahore’s weather, with several areas experiencing showers, including Gulberg, Kalma Chowk, Canal Road, Garhi Shahu and Ferozepur Road.

According to details, the weather change had resulted in a noticeable drop in temperature.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had forecasted that the skies will remain cloudy for the next 24 hours, with chances of more rain in the region.

Meanwhile, after a long dry spell across the country, heavy clouds have finally burst, bringing much-needed rainfall to different cities of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan.

In Punjab, cities like Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Rajanpur, Vehari, Mailsi, Ahmedpur Sharqia, Kot Addu, Jalalpur Pirwala, Lodhran, Dunyapur, Khairpur Tamewali, Fort Abbas, and Chishtian have experienced varying intensities of rain, which has made the weather more pleasant.

In Balochistan, areas such as Quetta, Dhadar, Sohbatpur, Chaman, Duki, Sibi, Kohlu, Kachi, Qila Abdullah, Jhal Magsi, Sanjawi, Mastung, and Nasirabad received rainfall with Quetta and Ziarat experiencing light snowfall, further dropping the temperature.

In Sindh, light rain in cities like Ghotki, Kashmore, Thul, and Kandhkot has also contributed to a pleasant change in the weather.

The weather department has predicted that the rainfall will continue for the next 24 to 48 hours, bringing relief to the parched regions.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday inaugurated the province’s first electric bus project, describing it as a major step towards a modern and eco-friendly transport system.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony in Lahore, the chief minister said the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) had always prioritized development, while previous governments were marred by political turmoil and corruption.

“This is Punjab on the path of innovation,” she remarked, adding that the dream of a green and clean province was now becoming a reality.

The newly launched electrobus service in Lahore will have a starting fare of Rs20, with the maximum fare set at Rs35. The government has also announced free travel for students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.

500 electric buses by August

Maryam Nawaz said that 27 electric buses would begin operations in Lahore from Tuesday, while 500 more buses were expected to arrive in Punjab by August.

She further revealed that the provincial government was manufacturing electric buses in Faisalabad and had also invited Chinese companies to invest in the sector.

The chief minister stated that the initiative was aimed at reducing pollution and providing affordable public transport, adding that the fare structure in Punjab was lower compared to other provinces.

“All buses are equipped with free Wi-Fi, mobile charging facilities, and CCTV cameras to enhance security, particularly for women,” she noted.

The Punjab CM also mentioned that she had never requested projects from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, unlike other provinces that received more development initiatives.

The Sindh government has announced revised school timings for the holy month of Ramadan, adjusting schedules for both single and double-shift institutions across the province.

Meanwhile, Punjab’s School Education Department has proposed a reduction in school hours, with final approval pending.

According to a notification issued by the Sindh Education Department on Thursday, primary schools operating in double shifts will have their first shift from 7:30 am to 11:30 am, while the second shift will run from 11:45 am to 2:45 pm. Single-shift primary schools will operate from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm.

On Fridays, primary school schedules will be further adjusted, with the first double shift running from 7:30 am to 10:30 am, while single-shift schools will function from 8:00 am to 11:30 am. The second double shift will take place from 11:45 am to 1:15 pm.

For secondary, higher secondary, and elementary schools, the first shift in double-shift institutions will be from 7:30 am to 11:30 am, with the second shift from 11:45 am to 2:45 pm.

Single-shift schools will observe timings from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm. On Fridays, the first double shift will conclude at 10:30 am, single-shift schools will close at 11:30 am, and the second double shift will continue until 1:15 pm.

The notification was issued under the directives of Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, ensuring that school hours are adjusted to accommodate fasting students and staff.

Meanwhile, in Punjab, the School Education Department has proposed reducing school hours by two hours during Ramadan. According to details, a recent meeting in Lahore considered the proposal, suggesting that girls’ schools operate from 7:30 am to 12:15 pm, while boys’ schools run from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm. Currently, school hours extend until 2:30 pm and 2:45 pm for boys and girls, respectively.

A final decision on Punjab’s revised school schedule will be taken after consultations with relevant education authorities, with new timings expected to come into effect from the first of Ramadan.

Renowned Pakistani anchor Madeha Naqvi recently revealed her favourite food preferences.

During her appearance on the Samaa Digital programme, "Samaa Podcast Punjabi," the discussion revolved around the contrasting food cultures of Lahore and Karachi, two of Pakistan’s most vibrant cities.

Naqvi said: "I have a deep-rooted connection to Lahore, where I grew up, my fondness for Karachi’s food has grown over the years. Lahore has its beauty, but Karachi feels like home to me now.”

She elaborated on how Karachi’s diverse culinary scene, including Bohra and Bihari communities, offers a wide variety of delicious options that appeal to her taste.

She also mentioned how the city provides a mix of cultures, where both Urdu and Punjabi languages are spoken, enhancing the food experience.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has once again targeted former prime minister Imran Khan claiming that while "good news is coming from everywhere," only bad news is emerging from Adiala Jail.

Speaking at a rally in Narowal, she referred to letters and pleas originating from the jail, which, she claimed, have been pleading for Khan's release. 

She praised her father - PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif -  for bringing Pakistan out of its economic struggles and vowed to continue working tirelessly to improve the lives of the people of Punjab.

"Under Nawaz Sharif's leadership, the country has overcome its difficulties. We will work day and night to change the lives of the people of Punjab," she declared.

Punjab's economic growth

Maryam Nawaz also highlighted the government's efforts in improving the provincial economy, claiming that Punjab has the lowest inflation rate compared to other provinces.

She emphasised that during Nawaz Sharif's leadership, Pakistan’s economy had taken off, contrasting it with the economic turmoil under Imran Khan's tenure.

“During Imran Khan's rule, the stock market crashed, and terrorism resurfaced in the country. But today, we are witnessing a different scenario. Inflation has decreased from 38% to 5%, and Pakistan’s economy is thriving once again,” she said.

PML-N's commitment to public service

The Punjab CM took pride in the provincial government's work over the past year. She stated that Punjab is now experiencing visible changes. "In just one year, we have transformed the province. Today, Punjab is cleaner, and the price of bread has reduced from Rs 25 to Rs 12-13," she noted.

She further discussed the government's support for low-income groups, revealing that loans are being provided to the poor for house construction. Farmers have been issued Kisan cards, and Himmat cards have been given to the disabled to ensure their well-being.

Maryam Nawaz also took a jibe at the previous PTI government, asking what they had done for the youth.

She claimed that her government is actively working to empower the youth by increasing scholarships to 50,000, with the distribution of 100,000 laptops on the horizon. 

"Under our leadership, we are not just talking about youth empowerment. We are taking tangible steps by offering scholarships and providing laptops to students,” she added.

Critique of PTI's governance

Without directly naming Imran Khan, Maryam Nawaz criticized the PTI government for the economic and security challenges Pakistan faced under their rule.

“The PTI government brought the country to the brink of default. Terrorism returned during their tenure. Now, all we hear is bad news from Adiala Jail,” she said, alluding to Khan’s imprisonment.

She continued to state that, contrary to the opposition's expectations, her government has been able to handle the country’s issues and is moving Pakistan towards progress.

"The opponents had created problems, believing that if the PMLN came into power, it would fail to manage the country. But today, we are on the path to development."

Maryam Nawaz also spoke about the ongoing infrastructure projects in Punjab, including the inauguration of various highway construction initiatives in Narowal.

She emphasised that her government is working tirelessly to improve the lives of the people in every aspect, from economic to social development.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has launched the ‘Asaan Karobaar’ programme, an initiative aimed at providing interest-free loans to entrepreneurs and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) across the province.

The programme seeks to promote economic growth by facilitating startups and existing businesses with accessible financing.

Addressing the launch ceremony in Lahore, CM Maryam Nawaz stated that the programme was the first of its kind in Punjab’s history, offering interest-free loans ranging from Rs1 million to Rs30 million to promote business activity.

She further announced that land would also be provided at highly subsidised rates to support new enterprises.

Interest-free loans for entrepreneurs

During the event, the chief minister distributed ‘Asaan Karobaar Finance’ cheques and business cards to selected entrepreneurs. Beneficiaries included Faisalabad’s Asif, who received Rs30 million for a pharmaceutical business, and Rawalpindi’s Wajahat Fareed, who secured Rs30 million for a software house. Similarly, Lahore’s Arshad was granted Rs30 million for a sports export business.

Other recipients included Sahiwal’s Ali Asif, who obtained Rs5 million for a furniture business, and Afzal, who was granted Rs3.175 million for a transport business. Lahore’s Shabbir received Rs5 million for a hair salon and cosmetics venture.

Additionally, Faizan Mumtaz secured an Asaan Business Card worth Rs5.75 million for a garments business, while Abu Bakar Saleh and Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali received Rs1 million each for paper manufacturing and a bakery business, respectively.

Loan details and repayment terms

The ‘Asaan Karobaar Finance Scheme’ offers two tiers of interest-free loans:

• Tier 1: Loans from Rs1 million to Rs5 million with a processing fee of Rs5,000.
• Tier 2: Loans from Rs6 million to Rs30 million with a processing fee of Rs10,000.

Both tiers offer a 0% interest rate with a repayment tenure of up to five years. Startups and new businesses will receive a grace period of six months, while existing businesses will be granted a three-month grace period. Repayments will be made in equal monthly instalments, with a late charge of Rs1 per Rs1,000 per day on overdue payments.

The loans will be disbursed through the Bank of Punjab, and there is no immediate requirement for an NOC, licence, or prior approval to obtain financing. "Get a loan today and start your business tomorrow," the chief minister said, emphasising the ease of access to funds.

Eligibility criteria for Asaan Karobar Scheme 

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Be aged between 21 and 57 years.
• Have a valid CNIC and registered mobile number.
• Own or plan a business located in Punjab.
• Be a tax filer with a clean credit history.
• Provide references and documentation related to business and residence.

Additionally, small businesses with annual sales of up to Rs150 million and medium-sized businesses with annual sales between Rs150 million and Rs800 million are eligible to apply.

In a strong stance against privilege and misuse of legal status, Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has stated that displaying the word "Advocate" on vehicle number plates is illegal.

The statement was made during a certificate distribution ceremony hosted by the Islamabad High Court Bar Association.

Justice Jahangiri emphasized that no individual, regardless of their profession, is above the law. He stressed that the practice of marking number plates with ‘Advocate’ creates a false sense of privilege, which goes against legal regulations. His statement underlined the importance of fairness and professionalism within the legal community.

“The law applies equally to all, and using such plates is a violation of legal protocols,” Justice Jahangiri said during the event, urging lawyers to remove the controversial number plates from their vehicles.

Major cities like Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi have seen operations targeting fancy or non-compliant number plates. The call for legal adherence is gaining momentum, with authorities urging vehicle owners to use official plates issued by Excise departments.

An American aircraft carrying 116 Indian nationals deported from the United States landed at Amritsar's international airport late Saturday night.

The second such flight, following the arrival of 104 deportees on February 5.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann criticized the central government for permitting U.S. military planes to land in Amritsar, suggesting it could tarnish the image of Punjab and its residents.

He questioned why these flights weren't directed to other international airports, such as those in Delhi or Gujarat.

Of the 116 deportees, 65 are from Punjab, with the remainder hailing from Haryana, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.

Punjab government has arranged temporary accommodations for deportees from other states, facilitating their onward travel to Delhi, while those from Punjab are being transported to their hometowns by road.

The Punjab Agriculture department has organized special rain prayers, known as Namaz-e-Istisqa, across the province in response to growing concerns over crop damage due to rainfall deficiency.

Agricultural offices throughout Punjab, including Lahore, hosted these traditional prayer ceremonies, drawing participation from both government officials and local residents. The ceremonies aim to seek divine intervention for much-needed rainfall in the region.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced the implementation of a landmark initiative to provide free three-marla plots to underprivileged, poor, and homeless individuals across the province.

Under the first phase of the scheme, a total of 1,892 plots will be allotted in 33 schemes spanning 22 districts of Punjab. The initiative aims to ensure that every deserving citizen has access to a place they can call home.

• Rawalpindi Division: 658 plots in 5 schemes across 4 districts
• Faisalabad Division: 288 plots in 4 schemes across 5 districts
• Lahore Region: 518 plots in 5 schemes across 3 districts

• Multan Region: 270 plots in 9 schemes across 5 districts
• Bahawalpur Region: 27 plots in 3 schemes

The scheme will benefit residents of Hazro, Attock, Jhelum, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Chiniot, Mamu Kanjan, Sillanwali, Jhang, Pattoki, Okara, Renala Khurd, Bhakkar, Khushab, Layyah, Vehari, Lodhran, Sahiwal, Chichawatni, Fort Munro, Rajanpur, Bahawalpur, and Bahawalnagar. 

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the initiative is not an act of charity but a fulfillment of the government's responsibility to ensure that the less fortunate also benefit from state resources. “Every citizen of Punjab deserves their own home -- this is my dream,” Maryam stated.

She has instructed authorities to expedite the process and take immediate steps to allocate plots to eligible individuals without unnecessary delays. 

Back in January, Maryam Nawaz had unveiled this landmark initiative to provide free plots to homeless and deserving families across the province. The announcement was made during the inauguration ceremony of the Maskan Ravi Housing Scheme in Kala Shah Kaku.

The chief minister highlighted the scheme's aim to uplift low-income families by granting them a chance to own land and build their homes. Speaking at the event, Maryam said, “Nawaz Sharif’s politics has always been about serving the people. Every developmental project in this country bears his seal of commitment.”

She further added that under this initiative, three-marla plots will be allocated free of cost to eligible individuals in areas close to urban centers.

The CM noted that housing remains a critical challenge, with many families lacking a permanent roof over their heads. "There are countless people in Punjab who neither own a house nor have the means to acquire one. This scheme is designed for such deserving individuals," she said.

Ambitious targets for housing development

Maryam Nawaz outlined ambitious plans for housing in the province. She revealed that 100 houses have already been constructed within a short span of two and a half months under the Maskan Ravi Housing Scheme.

Additionally, thousands more houses are currently under construction across Punjab, with plans to build one lakh houses in a year and provide homes to five lakh families within five years.

The chief minister expressed confidence in the public’s faith in her government’s initiatives, stating, “The people of Punjab trust Nawaz Sharif’s vision. They actively participate in every scheme, knowing that it will be completed with integrity and efficiency.”

The Punjab Environment Department has officially banned washing cars and using water pipes at home, enforcing a fine of Rs10,000 for violators.

The move comes as part of the Lahore High Court’s directive to curb excessive water wastage amid declining rainfall in the province.

According to a notification issued by the department, all illegal service stations have been ordered to shut down immediately. Moreover, service stations operating without a water recycling system will face a hefty fine of Rs100,000. To comply with the new regulations, service stations across Punjab must install water recycling systems by February 28, 2025.

The notification also prohibits the use of oil for washing vehicles and the use of groundwater at construction sites.

Officials revealed that Punjab has received 42% less rainfall over the past five years, making water conservation a critical priority. The restrictions, implemented under the Punjab Environmental Act, are effective immediately.

LHC verdict

Lahore High Court Justice Shahid Karim praised the Punjab government for its initiatives in water conservation, efficient water use, drought prevention, pollution control, and overall environmental improvement across the province.

In a written verdict, the Lahore High Court highlighted the Punjab government’s significant environmental measures and acknowledged its progress over the past eleven months. Justice Shahid Karim ordered that all monitoring responsibilities be entrusted to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The court emphasized that individuals who wash cars at home and waste water will be fined Rs10,000. It further noted that the EPA has taken several concrete steps to prevent water wastage and promote efficient water use.

The ruling also mandates that petrol pumps without a water recycling system will face a fine of Rs100,000. The EPA has been directed to inspect petrol pumps and oversee the installation of recycling plants, imposing fines on those who fail to comply with warnings.

Additionally, the Lahore High Court acknowledged that legislation has been enacted to ensure water conservation and efficient usage. An authority, led by the Chief Minister of Punjab, is being established to oversee these efforts.

Local governments have been instructed to enforce the installation of treatment plants, ensuring that new residential and commercial developments incorporate such systems at the time of construction.

The court also reviewed various environmental improvement measures in the transport sector, further reinforcing the province’s commitment to sustainability.

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif held meetings with Punjab Assembly members in Lahore, where he highlighted Pakistan's recent economic indicators, particularly noting the reduction in policy rate from 22% to 12%.

During the meetings with MPAs from the Lahore Division, Sharif praised current Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's efforts, expressing hope for the country's economic "takeoff." He pointed to decreasing inflation rates as a sign of relief for the general public.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz also participated in the consultative sessions, which focused on public development projects and future political strategy. The MPAs credited her for implementing systematic reforms in the province.

The meetings are part of an ongoing series of consultations between PML-N's senior leadership and provincial assembly members. Discussions centered around public development initiatives and the party's political strategy moving forward.

The former prime minister emphasized the economic turnaround, suggesting that the reduction in policy rate indicates improving economic conditions. He maintained that the public was experiencing relief from inflation after a challenging period.

The gathering provided a platform for provincial legislators to engage with the party's top leadership on various governance and development matters affecting their constituencies.

The Punjab government enforced Section 144 across the province, placing a ban on all political protests, rallies, sit-ins and related activities.

The government issued the notification, prohibiting such events for Saturday (February 8). In a statement, the Punjab Home Department clarified that the imposition of Section 144 was necessary to ensure public order, protect human lives, and safeguard property.

“Public rallies and sit-ins can serve as soft targets for terrorists,” the department stated, underlining the security concerns.  

The department also highlighted the risk of anti-state elements exploiting public protests for unlawful activities. “Miscreants can take advantage of public protests to engage in anti-state actions,” the Punjab Home Department added.  

The decision to impose Section 144 was made based on recommendations from the Cabinet Committee on Law and Order and the Provincial Intelligence Committee. A notification for the enforcement of Section 144 was subsequently issued by the Punjab Home Department.  

In a separate development, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, allocated funds for the upcoming political rally.

He provided Rs50million to the party for the event, scheduled to take place the following day.  

Sources revealed that a large convoy led by Umar Amin Gandapur would depart from Dera Ismail Khan and head to Swabi for the rally. "The expenses for the convoy, including vehicle rentals and other costs, have been covered," the sources confirmed.  

The spokesperson for the chief minister clarified that Ali Amin Gandapur personally funded the expenses for the rally, affirming, “The chief minister paid for the costs out of his own pocket.”

Addressing Water Scarcity and Industrial Pollution

Marriyum Aurangzeb acknowledged that South Punjab faces the highest water shortage, and efforts are being made to improve water conservation. Additionally, financial assistance has been provided to over 50 industrial units to install emission control systems.

CM Maryam increased the number of laptops for students to 110,000.  

She said that education and youth served as the true assets of the nation. “I wish every child could receive a laptop.

The Honhaar Scholarship Programme and laptops are the right of every student and the responsibility of the government,” she said.

She emphasised that students from Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were also their children.

“I think like a mother. We want to change the destiny of every child. Any student securing merit should apply to a good college, and the government will bear the fees,” she said.  

CM Maryam ordered the establishment of a special helpline for students under the scholarship and laptop scheme.

Additionally, Punjab set a minimum eligibility criterion of 65% marks to obtain a laptop.  

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Supremo Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday expressed optimism regarding the country’s economic outlook, stating that the recent decline in inflation signifies an improvement in the national economy.

The Punjab government has announced a ban on smoking and the use of tobacco-related products in all government and private schools across the province.

The rapper also set the record straight about his long-rumoured feud with fellow artist Honey Singh.

Akshay Kumar’s advice to Bohemia

Recalling his time working with Akshay Kumar, Bohemia revealed a key piece of advice the Bollywood icon once gave him. "Akshay told me that when you drive on a road, stray dogs often bark and chase cars with shiny rims, thinking they are meant for them. In a first-of-its-kind action, Faisalabad police have registered a case against a motorcyclist for violating the 60km/h speed limit set for the province.

The accused, identified as Rehan, was arrested for recklessly speeding on Bagh-e-Jinnah Road.

According to the police, Rehan was driving in a dangerous and reckless manner, posing a serious threat to public safety. The maximum speed limit for motorcyclists in the city is set at 60 kilometres per hour, and his violation led to immediate legal action.

On the other hand, to ensure compliance with speed limits, the Punjab Traffic Police have been directed to strictly enforce a 60km/h speed cap for motorcyclists. A letter has been issued to the traffic police to ensure the speed of motorcyclists at 60km/h. 

On the orders of the additional inspector general (traffic), the Punjab traffic senior superintendent of police (SSP) has issued instructions to all district officers. 

As part of this directive, chief traffic officers (CTOs) and district traffic officers (DTOs) across Punjab, including Lahore, have been instructed to monitor motorcycle speeds and take action against violators. 

The speed monitoring initiative will be enforced using Safe City cameras and speed guns in all districts. Furthermore, authorities have announced plans to purchase additional speed guns to enhance enforcement and maintain road safety.

Authorities have warned that strict action will be taken against those who violate traffic laws.

Punjab took a significant step towards modernisation and environmental sustainability as Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz inaugurated on Friday the province’s first electric vehicle (EV) bus service in Lahore.

During a meeting chaired by Nawaz, officials also reviewed the e-taxi project, marking another advancement in Punjab’s eco-friendly transport initiatives.  

With the launch of the pilot project, electric buses started operating across Lahore, covering a 21-kilometre route from Railway Station to Green Town via Queens Road, Mozang, Ferozepur Road, Campus Bridge, and Ichhra.

Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar briefed Nawaz on the initiative, highlighting its expected impact on urban mobility.

Authorities disclosed that 27 electric buses would be deployed on the designated route, facilitating the daily commute of approximately 17,000 passengers.

"This project is a major leap towards a cleaner and quieter Lahore," an official stated.  

For enhanced passenger safety, officials confirmed that the EV buses featured a dedicated section for women and had surveillance cameras installed to deter harassment incidents. "We have ensured that public transport remains safe and accessible for all commuters," a senior transport official remarked.  

Additionally, a specialised training programme commenced for 70 drivers to operate the new fleet efficiently. Authorities announced that the EV bus service would formally begin in mid-February.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz cautioned on Thursday the youth against those inciting violence, labelling such elements as "adversaries" of the country.

While inaugurating the "Khelta Punjab Games", CM Maryam asserted, “Those who provoke the youth to take to the streets, set fires, and destroy national assets for their own interests are not friends but enemies.”

She emphasised that only those who provide opportunities for education and sports could be regarded as true allies of the youth and Pakistan.  

Maryam urged young people to respond firmly to those instigating unrest. “Tell them that Pakistan is our red line,” she stated.

Addressing an event in Okara, CM Maryam took a dig at Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran, saying, “The Higher Power sees everything. He becomes the first premier to be ousted for taking the bribery.”

Expressing her thoughts, CM Maryam assailed the PTI founder and compared the latter with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif.

CM Maryam said, "My father [Nawaz Sharif] has served the country for 45 years, but still he was falsely accused of plundering."

"Today, the person who used to label the others as the thieves himself has proved guilty of taking bribery," she maintained.

“We will teach you [students] religion instead of telling the ways of casting the magical spell,” she said.

She said, “The unrest cannot exist for long in the country, but the uplift of the masses is uplift.”

The Punjab government has officially imposed a 60km/h speed limit for motorcycles across the province, including Lahore, following approval from the provincial cabinet.

According to a notification issued by the Transport Department, the new speed limit is now in effect, and violations will result in fines or legal action. The decision aims to enhance road safety and reduce traffic accidents involving motorcyclists.

Last week, the Lahore Traffic Police implemented a new law requiring all individuals riding motorcycles -- both drivers and passengers, regardless of their gender -- to wear helmets. The order, issued by Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Athar Waheed, was aimed at improving road safety and reduce fatalities caused by head injuries in accidents.

According to traffic officials, a one-week grace period was granted to women riders to comply with the new regulation. After this period, strict action was announced against violators, including the issuance of challans (fines).

"Motorcycle riders, especially online bike riders, often consider buying a second helmet a financial burden. However, this measure is critical to saving lives," CTO Waheed emphasized.

Officials revealed that Lahore has eight million registered vehicles, 53% of which are motorcycles. The high volume of motorcycles on the roads makes helmet usage a top priority for reducing accidents.

The Met Department has forecast rain in various areas of Punjab, including Lahore, from January 31 as a new rain-bearing system is set to enter the country.

The system is expected to bring light showers and a drop in temperatures, offering relief from the recent spell of hot and dry weather. 

According to the Met Office, Punjab has experienced unseasonably warm temperatures over the past few days due to persistent dry conditions. However, with the incoming system, light rain is expected in upper Punjab, including Lahore, in the coming days.

Experts have expressed concerns that climate change may be shortening the winter season in Pakistan, causing unpredictable weather patterns.

Meanwhile, Karachi is expected to experience a slight reduction in cold temperatures starting January 31, according to Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz.

Vendors referred to this vibrant fruit, also called cactus fruit, as a rare treasure. "This fruit is highly sought after and holds unmatched nutritional value," a vendor stated enthusiastically.  

Shoppers, drawn by its bright red hue, hailed the fruit’s richness in Vitamin C and iron. "It is not only delicious but also incredibly beneficial for human health," remarked one buyer.  

Native to the wilds of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Anar phali made its debut in Lahore’s markets this winter. City dwellers expressed their fascination with the fruit’s novelty and acknowledged their efforts to secure it. "We often have to make repeated visits to the market just to find this rare fruit," said a resident of Lahore.  

The seasonal delight, with its pomegranate-like seeds and a combination of sweet and tangy flavours, stood out among traditional winter fruits such as apples, bananas, and citrus varieties, which solidified its status as a must-try for the city’s residents.  

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced significant progress in the "Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar" program, aimed at providing interest-free loans for home construction. Over 9,000 individuals have received loans worth more than Rs8.5 billion under this initiative.

Key achievements of the program include a record 4 lakh applications submitted with documents through the online portal in the shortest timeframe. 5,000 loans disbursed in Phase 1, leading to over 5,000 houses nearing completion.

Construction has commenced on homes funded by 3,000 loans issued in Phase 2.

Loan applications are being verified by three independent microfinance institutions for transparency.

According to CM Maryam Nawaz, the program aims to construct 1 lakh houses within a year and 5 lakh houses in five years. A dedicated portal (acag.punjab.gov.pk) and helpline (0800-09100) have been established to facilitate citizens.

CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized the importance of achieving the project’s targets, stating, "The state is like a mother, and a mother feels the pain of homeless children more deeply." She expressed her vision of a Punjab where no one is homeless and everyone has the comfort of their own roof.

Under the program loans will be granted purely on merit, with no recommendations.

Beneficiaries of loans up to Rs1.5 million will repay the principal amount in monthly installments of Rs14,000 over nine years.

Maryam Nawaz remarked, "Seeing the houses built under this program feels like building my own home."

She concluded by saying that "Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar" will prove to be Pakistan's best housing project, providing sustainable solutions for the homeless.

The Punjab government has announced a strict crackdown on obscenity and indecency in theatres, and decided to ban for lifetime actors involved in vulgarity and revoke the licences of theatres promoting such content. 

During a meeting with theatre owners, Punjab Information and Culture Minister Azma Bukhari expressed strong displeasure at the state of some theatres, criticizing them for promoting obscenity and indecency. She also announced imposition of a lifetime ban on actors who indulge in obscenity, indecency, and vulgarity in theatres. 

She emphasized that theatres in Punjab should be family-friendly spaces, ensuring that families can enjoy quality entertainment without discomfort. She also asserted that the Punjab chief minister has called for a transformation of theatres into family-oriented venues. 

The provincial minister directed the Punjab Arts Council to demand affidavits from theatre owners, pledging adherence to rules against obscenity. Sealed theatres will only be reopened after submitting these documents. 

Bukhari warned theatre owners that violations of the new rules would result in severe consequences. “First, show-cause notices will be issued, followed by fines, and then licences will be cancelled,” she stated, reiterating the government’s commitment to maintaining decency in public entertainment spaces.

She also revealed that the Punjab government is working on new legislation to regulate theatres. The new laws aim to ensure that theaters prioritize family-friendly productions. “Theaters that comply with the rules and focus on producing quality, family-oriented dramas will receive full support from the government,” Bukhari assured adding, "Theatre owners and actors who want to spread obscenity cannot produce dramas in Punjab."

The provincial government has issued a final warning to theatre owners, urging them to uphold standards and avoid any activities that undermine cultural values.
