Expresses gratitude to the Pakistan Olympic Association and his coach for their unwavering supportNovak Djokovic withdraws from ATP finals due to injury
Novak Djokovic has confirmed he will not defend his ATP Finals title due to an ongoing injury, bringing an early end to his 2024 season.
Tennis legend Novak Djokovic, currently ranked 5th in the world, announced on Tuesday that he would not be competing in the upcoming ATP Finals in Turin, scheduled to begin on Sunday. The 37-year-old Serbian, who had been one of the contenders for the remaining spots in the season-ending event, cited an ongoing injury as the reason for his withdrawal.
In a statement posted on social media, Djokovic expressed his disappointment, saying, *“I was really looking forward to being there, but due to ongoing injury, I won’t be playing next week. Apologies to those who were planning to see me. Wishing all the players a great tournament. See you soon!”*
The news comes as little surprise, given Djokovic’s recent struggles with form and injury. He had previously withdrawn from the Paris Masters earlier this month, signaling an end to a challenging season. 2024 marks the first year since 2006 that Djokovic has failed to secure an ATP title, with the younger generation, including players like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, having eclipsed his position at the top of the sport.
Despite these setbacks, Djokovic’s year was not without triumph, as he won singles gold at the Paris Olympics, completing his collection of major honors.
Djokovic’s withdrawal from the ATP Finals also automatically opens up three places for other players, including Casper Ruud, Alex de Minaur, and Andrey Rublev, who were previously on the cusp of qualification. Ruud and Rublev are currently in action in Metz, while de Minaur is competing in Belgrade.
With this announcement, Djokovic’s 2024 season officially came to a close, as he looks to recover from injury and regroup for a fresh start in 2025.
New Zealand claim historic Test series victory in India
New Zealand have made history by winning their first Test series in India, clinching the second match with a 113-run victory in Pune on Saturday.
This win not only marked New Zealand’s first-ever Test series triumph on Indian soil since the series began in 1955 but also ends India's remarkable record of 18 consecutive home series wins, a streak that had been unbroken since December 2012.
Chasing a target of 359 runs, India was bowled out for 245 on day three, giving New Zealand an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.
The home crowd was left in stunned silence as spinner Mitchell Santner dominated the Indian batting lineup, taking six wickets for 104 runs after previously claiming 7 for 53 in India's first innings of 156.
Skipper Tom Latham expressed immense pride in his team’s achievement, stating, “Lot of New Zealand teams have come over the past 69 years and 13 series, and to be the first team to win a series here is special.” The victory is particularly sweet for the Black Caps, who had previously faced 13 series defeats in India.
Player of the Match Santner reflected on his performance, noting, “Every time you take wickets you get a little more confident... it got a little better.” The Indian batsmen struggled throughout the series, with their batting line-up failing to perform, leading to their lowest total at home of just 46 runs in the first match in Bengaluru.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma acknowledged the team's shortcomings, stating, “It is a collective failure... We had two-three bad innings, but it happens sometimes.” Despite this setback, India still leads the World Test Championship table, closely followed by Australia.
The final Test match of the series will commence on November 1 at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, where India will look to salvage pride against a historically victorious New Zealand side.

World Aquatics gives good showing at Paris under Al Musallam
The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris have elevated aquatic sports to new heights, largely due to the visionary leadership of Husain AHZ Al-Musallam, President of World Aquatics. His commitment to advancing water sports has made these games a landmark event, showcasing the values of inclusion, health, and global unity, and highlighting Asia’s growing prominence in aquatics.
With its iconic landmarks and vibrant ambience, Paris hosts diverse aquatic events, including swimming, diving, water polo, and synchronized swimming. Although the River Seine was initially considered as a venue, concerns about water quality led to its reconsideration. Al-Musallam emphasized the need for clean and safe environments for aquatic sports, advocating for alternative venues to ensure athlete health. "Athlete health and safety are paramount, especially in aquatics where water quality directly impacts performance and well-being," he stated.
The Paris Olympics have already been a triumph for Asian athletes. Chinese divers have excelled, with Lian Junjie and Yang Hao winning gold in the men’s synchronized 10-meter diving. Chang Yani and Chen Yiwen of China also captured gold in the women’s 3-meter synchronized springboard diving. Tang Qianting earned silver in the women’s 100m breaststroke, showcasing China’s strength in aquatics. Xu Jiayu from China won silver in the men’s 100m backstroke, and Siobhan Bernadette Haughey from Hong Kong secured a bronze medal in the women’s 200m freestyle, contributing to Asia's impressive medal tally.
Asia’s aquatic success has a rich history. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Japan’s Kosuke Hagino won gold in the men’s 400m individual medley and silver in the 200m freestyle, while China’s Chen Ruolin and Liu Huixia claimed gold in the women’s 10m synchronized platform diving. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics saw China’s Caeleb Dressel triumph in the men’s 100m butterfly, and South Korea’s Hwang Sun-woo earned bronze in the 200m freestyle, reflecting the region’s continued strength.
Al-Musallam, a former airline pilot and esteemed sports administrator from Kuwait, has spearheaded transformative changes in World Aquatics, including establishing an Aquatics Integrity Unit, forming an Athletes' Committee, and relocating the headquarters to Budapest. These reforms have enhanced transparency, athlete representation, and the sport’s growth, ensuring athletes’ voices are heard.
His vision extends beyond elite competition, promoting swimming in regions where it is less popular. "Water sports are not just about competition; they are about survival skills, fitness, and community building," he emphasized. His initiatives align with the Paris 2024 Olympics’ goals of sustainability, health, and inclusivity.
As Director General of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), Al-Musallam has been pivotal in advancing Asian sports globally. His leadership has improved athlete support, international collaborations, and major sporting events across Asia.
For the Asian audience, Husain AHZ Al-Musallam’s dedication to the Olympic movement and his leadership in World Aquatics are sources of immense pride and inspiration. As the Paris 2024 Olympics progress, Asia eagerly anticipates a new era where aquatics continue to shape a more inclusive and promising future.

Pakistan unveils new visa policy; abolishes fees for 126 countries
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Atta Tarar announced the launch of a new visa policy on the occasion of Independence Day.
The policy, which takes effect from today at noon, abolishes visa fees for citizens of 126 countries and simplifies the visa application process.
Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Minister Tarar highlighted the government's efforts to facilitate international travel to Pakistan, emphasizing the country's rich natural beauty and cultural heritage. "Our country is blessed with every natural blessing," he remarked, underscoring the desire to attract tourists from around the globe.
Under the new policy, visitors from the designated 126 countries will be able to apply for a 90-day visa by filling out a simplified form containing only 30 questions. The visa will be issued immediately upon completion of the form, significantly reducing the bureaucracy and delays that have previously hindered tourist arrivals.
Moreover, special provisions have been made for residents of Gulf countries, who will be granted visas upon arrival simply by presenting their passports.
"The doors of Pakistan are being opened to the world," the minister declared, noting that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance Pakistan's international image and attract more foreign visitors.
Minister Tarar also reassured potential tourists that their safety and security are top priorities for the government. He mentioned that security agencies will be kept informed of tourist arrivals and that the Ministry of Interior is coordinating with provincial governments to ensure robust security arrangements.
Additionally, the minister noted the significant growth in the tourism sector in Gilgit-Baltistan, where efforts are being made to promote quality and affordable accommodation for visitors. This move is expected to further boost the region's appeal as a top destination for both domestic and international tourists.
In a related announcement, Minister Tarar revealed that the federal cabinet will formally welcome Arshad Nadeem, Pakistan's gold medalist at the Paris Olympics, at Noor Khan Air Base. He lauded Nadeem's historic victory, calling it a momentous achievement for the nation.
Comparing Nadeem's triumph to Pakistan's 1992 Cricket World Cup victory, Tarar stated, "The honor brought by Arshad Nadeem is greater than that of the 1992 World Cup." He added that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had personally met Nadeem before his departure to Paris and would extend a grand welcome upon his return.
The minister also highlighted the government's commitment to supporting athletes, both before and after their success. He noted that Arshad Nadeem himself acknowledged the support provided by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, describing himself as "a plant planted by the Prime Minister."

Arshad Nadeem's coach reveals strategy for Olympics gold medal
Salman Iqbal Butt, the coach who played a pivotal role in Arshad Nadeem's journey to Olympic gold, shared insights into their successful strategy and the challenges they faced.
Butt, a key figure in shaping Nadeem’s Olympic success, recounted with Samaa TV the moment Arshad Nadeem threw his javelin over 90 metres during the recently concluded Paris Olympics 2024. He described his initial astonishment followed by a confident smile, realizing that no one could beat Nadeem’s performance.
"I am immensely grateful to the media for their support and encouragement throughout this journey," Butt stated. He highlighted the rigorous training regimen they followed, emphasizing that despite facing significant injuries, the team remained dedicated and did not take holidays.
"Our strategy was straightforward: hard work was the key. Managing injuries was one of the biggest challenges, but we persevered," he added. He further said they will now rest for a month, after which they will resume working again.
Reflecting on the competition, Butt revealed that when Nadeem made his second throw, it was evident it would surpass 80 metres. "As a coach, you have to maintain a calm demeanour. I didn’t show any signs of pressure to Arshad, and I was focused on the throw. I could not see the second throw as a camera was in front of me. When I saw it had reached 92.97 meters, I couldn’t help but smile," Butt said.
Butt acknowledged that Nadeem’s throw outperformed even Neeraj Chopra’s best efforts, underscoring Nadeem’s exceptional performance. "Based on my experience, achieving such a target was incredibly challenging. Arshad's technique and preparation were outstanding," he noted. He revealed that he had talked to Arshad about run-up and his arms.
Looking ahead, Butt expressed optimism about the future of Javelin in Pakistan, stating, "With the growing interest in javelin, we expect improvements in performance and increased attraction to the sport."

Is Arshad Nadeem as rich as Neeraj Chopra?
Pakistani athlete Arshad Nadeem made history at the Paris Summer Olympics by winning the country’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in track and field.
This monumental achievement has not only brought immense pride to Pakistan but has also sparked curiosity about the financial standing of the national hero.
Comparisons have naturally emerged with Indian star athlete Neeraj Chopra, whose success on the world stage has similarly captured widespread attention.
Arshad Nadeem’s net worth
Arshad Nadeem, hailing from a modest background in a small town, has become a household name after his triumphant gold medal in the javelin throw at the Paris Olympics 2024. His victory, a momentous occasion for Pakistan, has led to several accolades and financial rewards. Among the most notable are the Rs 10 crore awarded by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and an additional Rs 5 crore from Karachi’s Mayor Murtaza Wahab.
Despite these substantial rewards, Arshad Nadeem’s current net worth is estimated at less than Rs10 million. The influx of these recent prizes is expected to significantly boost his financial standing, reflecting the newfound recognition and appreciation for his achievements.
Neeraj Chopra’s net worth
On the other hand, Neeraj Chopra, who secured a silver medal in the same event, enjoys a markedly different financial status. The Indian javelin star, whose success has been consistently celebrated across the border, boasts a net worth of approximately Rs37 crore.
Chopra’s wealth is primarily derived from his winnings at international sports events, a series of high-profile endorsements, and his position as a Junior Commissioned Officer in the Indian Army. Beyond his financial success, Chopra also owns a three-storey home in Khandra, Haryana, near Panipat, further emphasising his affluent status.
While both athletes have earned their place in the annals of their respective nations’ sporting histories, their financial fortunes tell different stories. Neeraj Chopra’s considerable wealth contrasts sharply with Arshad Nadeem’s more modest earnings, highlighting the varying levels of financial support and sponsorship available to athletes in India and Pakistan.
However, what remains common between the two is their status as national icons. Their performances on the world stage have inspired countless aspiring athletes, proving that with dedication and hard work, even the most humble beginnings can lead to extraordinary success.

He added that This move is expected to boost the country's agricultural sector by bringing in advanced knowledge and techniques from one of the world's leading agricultural nations.

This initiative is designed to prepare Pakistan's youth for the demands of the global job market, particularly in the ever-expanding field of information technology.
During the ceremony, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif also took a moment to acknowledge the achievements of Arshad Nadeem, the athlete who made Pakistan proud in the Olympics by clinching the country's first individual gold medal in track and field category. Shehbaz had the PM's Youth Programme applauded Nadeem's efforts.
Shehbaz Sharif concluded by announcing that a comprehensive five-year program focusing on youth development would be launched immediately after August 14.
Abhishek Bachchan finally addresses Aishwarya Rai divorce rumours
Abhishek Bachchan has reportedly addressed ongoing rumours about his marriage to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
Recent speculation arose after Abhishek ‘liked’ a post related to divorce and Aishwarya attended a wedding alone last month. Although the couple has not officially commented on these rumours, multiple publications suggest that Abhishek spoke to an international media outlet about the rumours.
According to The Times of India, Abhishek responded to the speculation in a conversation with Bollywood UK Media by displaying his wedding ring and stating "still married". He is alleged to have further added: “I don’t have anything to say to you all about that (the rumours). You all have blown the entire thing out of proportion, sadly. I understand why you do it. You have to file some stories. It’s okay, we’re celebrities, we have to take it."
Abhishek and Aishwarya, who have been married for 17 years and share a daughter named Aaradhya Bachchan, have largely kept their marriage private in recent years. Their social media interactions have been limited to occasional posts on special occasions, like wishing each other on special days such as birthdays and anniversary.
Despite this, they continue to support each other publicly, with Abhishek attending Aishwarya's film events and Aishwarya cheering on Abhishek's family members, including at the premiere of Agastya Nanda’s debut project, The Archies. She posed with Abhishek, Aaradhya, Agastya and other Bachchan family members.
Recently, Abhishek made a solo appearance at the Paris Olympics, where he supported Indian athletes and celebrated Neeraj Chopra's silver medal win in javelin throw.
Tom Cruise hands Olympic flag to LA, closing Paris Games
Movie star Tom Cruise rappelled from the roof of France's national stadium and received the Olympic flag, bringing a heavy dose of Hollywood to the closing ceremony of the Paris Games as the French capital handed over to the next host Los Angeles.
Grammy-winning R&B artist H.E.R teased the Mission Impossible soundtrack as Cruise made his leap, drawing gasps from spectators as he dropped 50 metres to the floor of the Stade de France, in the finale to a ceremony that blended the traditional, the obscure and the razzle dazzle of Tinseltown.
While Paris used iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Palace of Versailles to win the hearts of Olympians and spectators alike, LA was swift to turn to its star draw: A-list celebrities.
Paris was bringing down the curtain on an Olympic Games that brought scintillating sport to the heart of the capital, breathing new life into an Olympic brand hurt by the difficulties of Rio de Janeiro's 2016 Games and the soulless spirit of Tokyo's COVID-hit event.
Even Parisians were carried away by the Olympic fervour.
"We wanted to dream. We got Leon Marchand," Paris 2024 chief Tony Estanguet told the crowd, referring to the French swimmer who won four golds.
"From one day to the next Paris became a party and France found itself. From a country of grumblers, we became a country of frenzied fans."
'Culture of peace'
The two weeks of sporting drama saw China and the United States duke it out for top spot in the medal table right down to the last event.
Echoing the heartache delivered to France by the United States in the men's basketball final, the American women's basketball side handed France a gut-wrenching one-point defeat to earn a 40th gold medal and top spot on the medal table.
As the world emerged from the COVID pandemic in 2022, Paris had promised an Olympic "light at the end of the tunnel" and to provide the stage for a carefree Games.
But Russia's war in Ukraine on Europe's eastern flank, conflict in the Middle East, and France's heightened state of security alert loomed large as the Games got under way.
International Committee President Thomas Bach saluted the athletes as he declared the Games closed.
"During all this time, you lived peacefully together under one roof in the Olympic Village. You embraced each other," Bach said. "You respected each other, even if your countries are divided by war and conflict. You created a culture of peace."
High bar for Los Angeles
Cruise's exit on a motorbike saw the closing ceremony transition to a prerecorded video of the 62-year-old skydiving down to the Hollywood sign, where a wide shot showed the Olympic rings incorporated into the LA landmark.
The flag was then passed from U.S. Olympians past and present as it traversed the city before reaching a beach party, where the LA music icons the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Billie Eilish, and Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre performed.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has acknowledged Paris has set a high standard. But the City of Angels has billed itself as a beacon of diversity and will have Hollywood to fall back on.
"They've got a high bar to reach. A lot of work to do," said James Rutledge, 59, a former banker wearing a Team USA t-shirt outside the Stade de France. "Hollywood next? That's something to play with."
Sporting memories
France will take away fond sporting memories.
The French had a new golden boy to celebrate with swimmer Marchand emerging as the king of the pool, before French judoka Teddy Riner reigned supreme as he claimed his fifth Olympic gold medal.
Simone Biles put her twisties misery of Tokyo behind her, making a long-awaited Olympic return in front of a star-studded crowd. She arrived the world's most decorated gymnast and left with a further three gold medals for her trophy cabinet.
Breaking made its Olympic debut - to some derision on social media - whilst 3x3 basketball, sports climbing, skateboarding and surfing made their second appearances.
The IOC will be relieved that no major scandals erupted, although it did have to grapple with some controversies.
A simmering doping row involving Chinese athletes hung over the Olympic swimming meet where the United States faced the biggest challenge to their reign in decades.
A storm around gender eligibility hit the women's boxing competition, revealing the toxic relations between the IOC and a widely discredited International Boxing Association.
Meanwhile, a $1.5 billion clean-up of the Seine rewarded Paris with the optics of triathlon and marathon swimmers competing in the river through central Paris, without a wave of illness ensuing.

WAPDA's role in Arshad Nadeem's rise
Arshad Nadeem, Pakistan's star javelin thrower, has been a dedicated employee of the WAPDA Sports Board since 2016.
His recruitment was approved by then-Chairman WAPDA, General (retd) Muzammil, who facilitated Nadeem's induction into Grade 11, according to sources within WAPDA.
Nadeem's outstanding performances on the global stage, particularly in recent years, earned him a promotion to Grade 18 in 2020, a significant upgrade from his initial position.
WAPDA took a keen interest in his development early on, preparing him for the 2016 Asian Junior Championship, an initiative that has borne fruit in his subsequent international achievements.
Sources further revealed that the Chief Executive of LESCO has now recommended Nadeem for another promotion, this time to Grade 19, in recognition of his continued excellence in athletics.
The final decision on this promotion will be taken by the WAPDA Sports Board, pending approval from the current Chairman, General (retd) Sajjad Ghani. A notification is expected to be issued soon.
WAPDA sources dismissed recent claims circulating on social media regarding the absence of javelins and inadequate training facilities for athletes like Nadeem, terming them as baseless propaganda.
They emphasised that many of the country's national heroes, including Arshad Nadeem, wrestler Inam Butt, weightlifter Noah Dastgir, and powerlifter Mah Noor, enjoy full support from WAPDA.
Additionally, it was noted that Nadeem managed to escape the downsizing efforts that targeted sports departments during the tenure of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Despite orders from various departments to shut down sports divisions, WAPDA ensured the continuation of its sports programs, allowing athletes like Nadeem to continue their training and representation of Pakistan on the world stage.

Whether one likes it or not, Imran Khan is a political reality: Qureshi
PTI senior leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that he has been active in politics for 40 years, but no cases were registered against him for the first 39 years of his career.
In an informal conversation with journalists at Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore, he, however, lamented that dozens of cases have been filed against him in the past year alone.
The veteran politician emphasized the importance of recognizing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Founder Imran Khan as a political reality, regardless of differing opinions. "Whether one likes it or not, the founder of PTI is a political reality," Qureshi said, stressing that political stability cannot be achieved without accepting this fact.

He specifically mentioned Mahmood Khan Achakzai, describing him as a democrat and stating that a person with democratic ideals cannot be a traitor. Qureshi further emphasized that peace in Balochistan can only be achieved through negotiations, advocating for dialogue as the path forward.
In addition to his comments on the political situation, Qureshi took a moment to congratulate Olympian Arshad Nadeem on his recent gold medal victory, acknowledging the athlete's achievement as a source of national pride.

Sri Lanka crush India to win ODI series after 27 years
Sri Lanka defeated India in a One Day International (ODI) series for the first time since 1997. The Islanders claimed the three-match series 2-0, after a decisive 110-run victory in the third ODI held on Wednesday at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
This remarkable achievement came on the back of a dominant performance by Sri Lanka, who had earlier secured a 32-run win in the second ODI and saw the first game end in a tie.
The series victory marks a significant milestone for Sri Lankan cricket, highlighting their resurgence on the international stage.
Sri Lanka, opting to bat first, set a formidable target of 249 runs. The opening duo of Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando laid a strong foundation with an 89-run partnership. Nissanka scored a steady 45 off 65 balls, while Fernando narrowly missed out on a century, crafting a well-played 95 off 102 deliveries.
Contributions from Kusal Mendis (59) and Kamindu Mendis (23) further bolstered the total, culminating at 248 for seven in their allotted 50 overs.
In response, India’s batting lineup faltered under pressure, crumbling for a mere 138 runs in 26.1 overs. Indian captain Rohit Sharma was the top scorer for the visitors, with a brisk 35 off 20 balls. Veteran batsman Virat Kohli could only muster 20 runs off 18 balls before his dismissal, which sparked a dramatic collapse of the Indian middle order.
Rishabh Pant (6), Shreyas Iyer (8), and Axar Patel (2) fell cheaply, unable to withstand Sri Lanka’s relentless spin attack. Washington Sundar provided some resistance with a quick 30 off 25 balls, but his efforts were in vain as India’s innings folded rapidly. Kuldeep Yadav’s dismissal on the first ball of the 27th over sealed Sri Lanka’s momentous win.
The standout performer for Sri Lanka was Dunith Wellalage, who dismantled the Indian batting lineup with a five-wicket haul. Jeffrey Vandersay also made a significant impact, claiming two crucial wickets.
Sri Lanka's captain, reflecting on the series victory, expressed immense pride in his team’s performance. “This series win is a testament to our hard work and determination. It’s a historic moment for Sri Lankan cricket,” he said.
On the other hand, India’s skipper Rohit Sharma acknowledged the shortcomings of his side, stating, “We failed to capitalize on key moments. Credit to Sri Lanka for their exceptional performance throughout the series.”

Ushna Shah reveals struggle with high testosterone levels, PCOS
Renowned actress Ushna Shah has shared her struggle with high testosterone levels, attributing it to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
In a series of Instagram posts and tweets, Shah revealed that she, along with one in five women in Pakistan, grapples with this condition, which results in elevated levels of the male sex hormone testosterone.
Ushna’s candid disclosure sheds light on the broader issue of PCOS, a common yet often misunderstood medical condition.
The actress emphasised that many women in Pakistan, including her, face challenges due to PCOS, which is marked by hormonal imbalances leading to symptoms such as excessive body hair, a condition known medically as hirsutism.
Addressing her followers, Ushna Shah noted that high testosterone levels have given her stronger muscles and more energy, but clarified that these characteristics do not undermine her femininity.
She stressed that despite these hormonal fluctuations, she remains entirely female and maintains her feminine qualities. Shah’s remarks come in response to outdated perceptions that associate high testosterone levels with masculinity or third gender.
Shah’s advocacy for awareness is timely, given recent controversies, such as the case of Algerian athlete Imane Khelif. Khalif was controversially disqualified from the Paris Olympics due to high testosterone levels, leading to a debate over her gender identity.
Despite the International Olympic Committee’s confirmation of Khalif's female gender based on her identification documents, the incident has highlighted the need for greater understanding and sensitivity regarding hormonal conditions.

All you need to know about Yusuf Dikec, the Turkey's viral shooter
Turkish air pistol shooter Yusuf Dikec achieved a remarkable feat at the 2024 Paris Olympics, winning a silver medal in the mixed team 10-meter air pistol event with limited equipment.
His victory, alongside his partner Sevval Ilayda Tarhan, marked Turkey's first-ever medal in Olympic shooting.
The 51-year-old Dikec, participating in his fifth Olympic Games since debuting in Beijing in 2008, became an internet sensation on Wednesday after a photo of him shooting with minimal gear went viral.
Unlike his competitors, who typically don specialized goggles and ear protection, Dikec competed in regular prescription glasses and earplugs. A particularly striking image of him, hand in pocket while shooting, garnered over 21 million views on X (formerly known as Twitter), cementing his status as a legend at the Paris Games.
Dikec's approach to the sport defied conventional norms. The viral photo depicted him in a T-shirt, with one hand nonchalantly in his pocket, exuding a calm and composed demeanor. This image stood in stark contrast to that of his Serbian rival Damir Mikec, who was fully equipped with a blinder, a lens, and large ear defenders. Despite these differences, Dikec's performance spoke volumes about his skill and experience.
Dikec and Tarhan's silver medal not only highlighted their exceptional talent but also marked a significant milestone for Turkey in Olympic history. This achievement was particularly poignant for Dikec, as it was his first Olympic medal. Reflecting on his journey, Dikec expressed hope for future success, saying, "I hope next in Los Angeles [for] a gold medal."
Social media platforms were abuzz with reactions to Dikec's performance. Many users praised his seemingly casual attitude and likened him to a regular individual excelling on the Olympic stage. Memes and video compilations celebrating his unique style were widely shared, and Dikec himself embraced the attention, reposting Turkish-language memes on his Instagram.
As the shooting events concluded, Dikec and Tarhan traveled to Paris, where they were warmly welcomed at the Champions Park, an open-air venue celebrating medalists. Dikec's focus now shifts to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where he aims to build on his historic achievement.

Controversy surrounding 2024 Paris Olympics centers on "sexist" women's sportswear
Because of the skimpy swimming suits and leotards, some track athletes have criticized the official Nike kits for American women competing in the Paris 2024 Olympics, calling them "a costume born of patriarchal forces" and "treating women as second-class citizens" in a comment on Nike's Instagram page.
France has faced criticism for its move to forbid its athletes from wearing the hijab.
The Summer Olympics began on Friday and will continue until August 11. French sportswomen will not be able to exercise their right to wear whatever they like, even if the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has permitted international athletes to wear the hijab.
Whether it's about prohibiting headscarves used by some Muslim women or discriminatory clothing, activists claim that regulations might limit the freedoms and needs of women. Some argue that women ought to have the freedom to dress however they feel comfortable.
Let's examine the discussion surrounding women's sportswear.
Why have Nike kits for this Olympics been criticised?
View this post on InstagramA post shared by CITIUS MAG | Running + Track and Field News (@citiusmag)
Track and field website Citius Mag initially revealed the men's and women's Nike uniforms for the US track and field teams at the Paris Olympics in April.
Men's clothing consists of a tank top and shorts that fall past the mannequin's fingertips. Female athletes take offence at the kit, which is a leotard with a high-cut bikini line for women.
American track and field athlete Lauren Freshmen characterized the outfit on Instagram, calling it "a costume born of patriarchal forces."
“If this outfit was truly beneficial to physical performance, men would wear it,” she said.
US Paralympian athlete Jaleen Roberts posted on the new Nike kit image, saying, “This mannequin is standing still and everything’s showing … imagine MID FLIGHT.”
"Shame, shame, shame Nike in treating women as second-class citizens with their Olympic outfits," a different commenter on Nike's Instagram page said.
Some athletes, however, drew attention to the fact that female competitors would have access to a variety of styles and could decide to don the men's uniforms if they so desired.
Olympic pole vaulter Katie Moon said: “I love people defending women, but we have at least 20 different combinations of a uniform to compete in with all the tops and bottoms available to us.”
"The goal was to offer options that met athletes' desires for choice, comfort, and performance," the sports giant Nike said in defence of the clothing.
"The most athlete-informed, data-driven, and visually unified the company has ever produced" was how the kits were described.
Olympics 2024: South Korea regrets being wrongly introduced as North Korea
South Korea expressed regret that its delegation of athletes at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony on Friday was introduced as from rival North Korea and has demanded assurances from organisers the mistake will not happen again.
As the boat carrying South Korean athletes passed on the Seine, the announcer introduced them as the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea" - the official name of North Korea - in French and English.
The announcer used the same introduction when the North Korean delegation passed.
South Korea's vice minister for sports and culture, Jang Mi-ran, who was in Paris, had requested a meeting with International Olympics Committee President Thomas Bach, the ministry said in a statement.
"We express regret that the country was introduced as North Korea at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games when the athletes of the Republic of Korea were entering," it said.
South Korea's National Olympic Committee immediately referred the incident to the Games' organisers and requested that the error will not be repeated.
South Korea's delegation includes 143 athletes competing in 21 events. North Korea, which is returning to the Games for the first time since Rio 2016, has sent 16 athletes.
Celine Dion returns to live stage in Paris opening ceremony
Celine Dion made a comeback to the live stage on Friday singing Edith Piaf's classic 'L'Hymne A l'Amour' to close the Paris Olympics opening ceremony.
"In the ceremony we have a love anthem and that's L'Hymne A l'Amour. We all wanted to finish the show with this song and our first idea was very simple and clear. We wanted to ask the best singer to sing love and this is Celine Dion," artistic director Thomas Jolly told Reuters.
"It was obvious for us to ask her to do that to close the ceremony."
The 56-year-old singer said in late 2022 that she had been diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder called stiff-person syndrome that causes muscle spasms.
The syndrome causes muscle rigidity and increased sensitivity to sound, touch and emotional stimuli that can trigger spasms. The condition led the multiple Grammy winner to cancel all of her tour dates for 2023 and 2024.

The Canadian singer, who started her career singing in French, had not performed live since March 2020, when she appeared in New Jersey.
"How proud we are! Our Celine singing Edith Piaf's L'hymne à l'amour at the Opening Ceremonies of the Paris Olympic Games," Quebec Premier Francois Legault wrote on X.
"A proud Quebecer from Charlemagne is on stage at the Opening Ceremony! Celine Dion is a Canadian icon, an incredible talent, and she overcame a lot to be there tonight," Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote on X.
"Celine, it’s great to see you singing again."
Dion, best known for the "Titanic" movie theme song "My Heart Will Go On", was first spotted in Paris on Tuesday, triggering speculation that she would be part of Friday's extravaganza.
Flotilla on Seine, rain, Celine Dion mark start of Paris Olympics 2024
French President Emmanuel Macron declared the Olympic Games open on Friday after a soaking wet ceremony in which athletes were cheered by the crowd along the Seine, dancers took to the roofs of Paris and Lady Gaga sang a French cabaret song.
France's three-time Olympic gold medallists Marie-Jose Perec and Teddy Riner then lit the Olympic cauldron, suspended on a hot-air balloon, before Canada's Celine Dion sang Edith Piaf's "Hymn to Love", in her first public performance in years, drawing huge cheers from the crowd.
The 30-metre (98 ft) high balloon carrying a 7-metre diametre ring of fire took to the air and was hovering dozens of metres above the ground.
It will be in the air from sunset until 2 am local time every day, organisers said.
"We are so proud of this show, I'm so proud that sport and culture were celebrated in such a fantastic manner tonight, it was a first and the result was fantastic despite the rain," Paris 2024 organising president Tony Estanguet told reporters.
A fleet of barges took the competitors on a 6 km-stretch of the river alongside some of the French capital's most famous landmarks, as performers recreated some of the sports to be showcased in the Games on floating platforms.
It was the first time that an opening ceremony has taken place outside a stadium, adding to the headaches for a vast security operation, just hours after a sabotage attack on the high-speed TGV rail network caused travel chaos across France.
"I invite everybody: dream with us. Like the Olympic athletes, be inspired with the joy that only sport can give us. Let us celebrate this Olympic spirit of living in peace," International Olympics Committee President Thomas Bach said as the ceremony came to an end at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.
More than 10,500 athletes will compete at the Olympics, 100 years since Paris last staged the Games. Competition started on Wednesday and the first of the 329 gold medals will be awarded on Saturday.
As the show started four hours earlier, a giant plume of blue, white and red smoke, resembling the French flag, was sent high above a bridge over the Seine as part of a show that included many postcard-like depictions of France, including a huge cancan line performed by Moulin Rouge dancers on the banks.
A more modern image of the country was on display when French-Malian pop star Aya Nakamura, the most-listened to French female singer in the world, sang some of her biggest hits, accompanied by the French Republican Guard's army choir.
Nakamura's performance drew some of the ceremony's biggest cheers. Rumours of her inclusion had sparked a row over French identity, with supporters saying she represented the vibrancy of modern-day France while her detractors said her music owes more to foreign influences than French.
Pouring rain
While the celebration of French culture, fashion and history was warmly cheered by many of the 300,000 spectators lining the river, hundreds were seen leaving early as the rain fell.
"It was good other than the rain, it was nice, it was different, instead of being in a stadium being on the river, so that's always a good thing - interesting, unique," said Avid Pureval, 34, who came to the Games from Ohio.
"Once you're wet, it's fine," he said. Still, he was heading back to his hotel after the French boat passed, long before the ceremony ended.
"It would have been better with sun," said Josephine, from Paris, sitting beside her 9-year-old daughter and who paid 1,600 euros ($1,736) for her seat.
With many world leaders and VIPs present, the ceremony was protected by snipers on rooftops. The Seine's riverbed was swept for bombs, and Paris' airspace was closed.
Some 45,000 police and thousands of soldiers were deployed in a huge security operation in Paris for the ceremony. Armed police patrolled along the river in inflatable boats as the armada made its passage along the Seine.
Welcomed in Tahiti
A mix of French and international stars, including soccer great Zinedine Zidane, 14-times French Open champion Rafa Nadal, 23-times Grand Slam champion Serena Williams and three paralympic athletes were among the last torchbearers before the cauldron was lit.
It will blaze until the closing ceremony on Aug. 11.
At the start of the parade, applause erupted for the Greek boat - the first delegation, by tradition - and there were even bigger cheers for the boat that followed, carrying the refugees' team. The French, U.S. and Ukrainian delegations also got loud cheers.
The two most decorated athletes in the Games' history, Michael Phelps and Martin Fourcade, unveiled the gold, silver and bronze medals.
At one point, there was a live crossover to the early morning welcome ceremony at the surfing venue, 16,000 km away in the Pacific island of Tahiti.
Israel delegation
France is at its highest level of security, though officials have repeatedly said there was no specific threat to the opening ceremony or the Games.
But since the last Games - the Winter Olympics held in Beijing in 2022 - wars have erupted in Ukraine and Gaza, providing a tense international backdrop.
Israeli competitors are being escorted by elite tactical units to and from events and are given 24-hour protection throughout the Olympics due to the war in Gaza, officials say.
The Israel delegation got some boos, but also a lot of cheers, as it sailed by spectators, Reuters reporters saw. Chants of "Palestine! Palestine! Palestine!" rose from the crowd as the boat passed.
Macron, who won a second mandate two years ago, had hoped the Olympics would cement his legacy. But his failed bet on a snap legislative election has weakened him and cast a shadow over his moment on the international stage.
Why do Olympians bite their medals? Tradition explained
The Olympics, the world’s largest sporting event, held every four years, sees thousands of athletes competing for the dream of winning gold medals.
But have you ever noticed the peculiar habit of gold medal winners biting their medals? Famous Olympians like Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt have all been seen performing this odd act.
Historically, traders would bite gold coins to check their authenticity, as gold is a soft metal and teeth marks would confirm its purity. However, Olympic athletes are not testing their medals for purity. In fact, the International Olympic Committee stopped awarding pure gold medals after 1912.
So why do athletes bite their medals? The answer lies in the demands of photographers. According to the International Olympic Association, this quirky tradition is fueled by photographers who believe that the image of an athlete biting their medal will make a great shot for newspapers.
David Velchinsky, president of the International Society of Olympic Historians, mentioned in an interview that such poses have become a hobby for photographers. They consider it an iconic image that can be sold, rather than something athletes naturally do.
Interestingly, this tradition can sometimes backfire. David Müller, a silver medalist from the 2010 Winter Olympics, actually broke a tooth while striking this pose for a photo.
Thus, the tradition of athletes biting their Olympic medals is less about testing the gold and more about creating a memorable, sellable image for the media.
French rail network sabotaged by arson attacks ahead of Olympics
France's high-speed rail network was hit by malicious acts, including arson, that disrupted the transport system, train operator SNCF said on Friday, hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.
A source close to the investigation told AFP the attacks were coordinated acts of sabotage. This was a massive attack on a large scale to paralyse the TGV network, SNCF told AFP, adding that many routes would have to be cancelled.
SNCF was the victim of several simultaneous malicious acts overnight, the national train operator said, adding that the attacks had affected its Atlantic, northern and eastern lines.
"Arson attacks were started to destroy our facilities," it said, adding that traffic on the affected lines was heavily disrupted, and the situation would last through the weekend as repairs were conducted.
The massive attack against France's high-speed rail network was an "outrageous criminal act", Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete said Friday, hours before the Paris Olympics opening ceremony.
There would be "very serious consequences" for rail traffic throughout the weekend with connections towards northern, eastern and northwestern France halved, Vergriete said, while rail operator SNCF chief executive Jean-Pierre Farandou said 800,000 passengers had been affected.
"Trains were diverted to different tracks but we will have to cancel many them", the statement said.
The southeastern line wasn’t affected as "a malicious act was foiled".
SNCF warned passengers to delay their trips and stay away from train stations. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. But two security sources said initial suspicions fell on hardline leftist militants or environmental activists.
The parade on Friday evening will see 7,500 competitors travel down a six-kilometer (four-mile) stretch of the river Seine on a flotilla of 85 boats.
It is the first time a Summer Olympics has been opened outside the main athletics stadium, a decision troubled with danger at a time when France is on its highest alert for terror attacks.
At Paris's Montparnasse train station, dozens of passengers had been waiting for more information about their trips after delays of 30 minutes to two hours were announced.
"Normal traffic was expected to resume on Monday, July 29th," stated one of the signs in the departure hall.
Rafael Nadal defeats Leo Borg in Bastad Open
Rafael Nadal swept past Leo Borg, son of tennis great Bjorn Borg, to advance to the second round of the Bastad Open on Tuesday.
This marks an important step in his preparation for the Paris Olympics. In his first singles match since a first-round exit at Roland Garros on May 27, the 38-year-old Nadal secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory despite wet conditions.
Both Nadal and the 21-year-old Borg, ranked 461 in the world, were wild card entries in this Swedish clay-court tournament.
Despite an early scare with the former world number one slipping on the wet white line, Nadal broke for 3-1, hitting four aces to take the first set in 43 minutes.
An immediate break in the second set gave Nadal control, and he sealed the match on his second match point after 1 hour and 25 minutes on court, marking his eighth ATP tour match win this season.
"It's good, I'm finally defending my title," joked Nadal, recalling his last appearance in Bastad when he won the title at age 19 in 2005. "I haven't been playing a lot of tennis in the last few months. The feelings are great, playing in front of a full crowd means a lot to me and I'm lucky to have been able to play without rain. Even in the tougher moments, I have been able to keep going with the help of the team, but of course, the fans have a huge impact on that. They give me amazing energy."
The 22-time Grand Slam winner also praised his young rival, saying, "It's a huge honour to play against the son of one of the biggest legends in the history of our sport. I think he played quite well, he has a great future ahead. I wish him all the very best."
Next, Nadal will face fifth seed Cameron Norrie in the second round after the British player defeated Slovak Jozef Kovalik 7-6 (7/4), 6-4. Nadal skipped Wimbledon to focus on the Olympics, which will be held at Roland Garros, where he has won 14 French Open titles.
On Monday, Nadal also teamed up with Casper Ruud for a doubles win on clay in Bastad, just two weeks ahead of the Paris Games. Top seed Andrey Rublev starts his campaign on Wednesday against 121st-ranked Thiago Tirante of Argentina.

Amidst the splendour of Paris and the passion surrounding K-pop sensation BTS, Jin, the eldest member of the group, emerged as a central figure during the Paris Summer Olympics torch relay.
On Sunday evening, Jin undertook the prestigious role of torch-bearer near the esteemed Louvre Museum, marking a poignant occasion following his recent completion of mandatory military service in South Korea.
Jin's arrival in Paris earlier in the week, had sparked an upsurge of anticipation among fans globally. Supporters, affectionately known as the BTS ARMY, gathered in throngs along the historic streets adjacent to the Louvre, displaying heartfelt expressions of admiration and encouragement for the artist.

Each stride represented gratitude towards his admirers, whose unwavering support and enthusiasm had facilitated his participation in this momentous event.
Following his involvement in the relay, Jin conveyed his deep appreciation, stating, "I feel immensely honored to have been afforded the opportunity to partake in today's torch relay. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to ARMY and all fans whose unwavering dedication enabled me to bear the torch."

Bangladesh draw first blood against New Zealand in T20I series
Bangladesh secured a historic five-wicket triumph over New Zealand in the inaugural match of the three-match Twenty20 series at McLean Park in Napier on Wednesday.
This victory marked Bangladesh's inaugural Twenty20 success on New Zealand's turf, arriving merely four days after securing their maiden away victory in a one-day international against the Black Caps at the same venue.
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto expressed his elation and pride, stating, "I'm genuinely thrilled and exceptionally proud of our performance." New Zealand, directed to bat by Shanto, encountered early challenges, losing three wickets before concluding their innings at 134 for nine in the allotted 20 overs.
Shanto commended Bangladesh's bowlers for swiftly adapting to the conditions and voiced confidence after limiting the hosts.
Despite the early setbacks, Bangladesh stabilised their innings, with the experienced Litton Das making a substantial contribution and finishing unbeaten on 42.
Mitchell Santner, standing in for regular skipper Kane Williamson, acknowledged Bangladesh for their bowling prowess.
Despite New Zealand's attempt to inject excitement into the game, the powerplay ultimately proved decisive, as per Santner.
Ranked ninth in Twenty20 international cricket, Bangladesh surprised by overcoming third-ranked New Zealand. The bowlers, who had previously dismissed the Black Caps for 98 in the preceding ODI, continued their impressive form.
Shoriful Islam particularly stood out with figures of 3-26, and Mahedi Hasan, with an unbeaten 19, played a crucial role in securing the win for Bangladesh.
The second and third Twenty20 Internationals are scheduled to take place at Mount Maunganui on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
Kishmala Talat secures historic bronze in Asian Games shooting event
Young shooter Kishmala Talat clinched the bronze medal at the ongoing Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
This significant win marked Pakistan's first-ever medal in shooting at the Asian Games 2023.
Competing in the 10m Air Pistol event, Kishmala secure the bronze medal on Friday.
She achieved a total score of 218.2 points.
In a highly competitive event, India took the top two spots, with 17-year-old Palak Gulia claiming gold and 18-year-old Esha Singh earning the silver medal.
Palak and Esha achieved remarkable scores of 242.1 and 239.7, respectively, setting an Asian Games record in the process.
However, Kishmala's historic accomplishment was a first win for Pakistan, as she became the first shooter from the country to reach the podium at the Asian Games.
In the earlier 10m air rifle shooting discipline, Pakistan's representation faced challenges as Ghufran Adil, Aqib Latif, and Zeeshan Fareed were unable to qualify among the top 8 for the next round.
Ghufran finished 31st with 622.7 points, Aaqib secured 44th place with 616.7 points, and Zeeshan finished 53rd with 608.4 points.
As a team, Pakistan placed 14th with a combined total of 1874.8 points in the 10m air rifle competition.
In another shooting event, Pakistan's G.M. Bashir had a strong start in the first round of the qualification phase, securing the eighth position.
However, his journey in the top 4 race was cut short after he garnered only 13 points in the second round.

This remarkable feat marked only the second time in history that an Asian athlete had surpassed the 90-meter mark in this discipline.
Nadeem's extraordinary talent was further highlighted at the World Athletics Championships, where he secured the silver medal with a throw of 86.16 meters, narrowly trailing behind India's Neeraj Chopra.
Ahmed Shehzad, a seasoned opening batter who made his international debut in 2009, has been out of the national cricket squad since 2019 when Pakistan faced Sri Lanka in a T20I match in Lahore. Despite a career marked by moments of brilliance, Shehzad's sporadic performances have kept him away from the national team, making a return in the foreseeable future seem unlikely.
Among all formats, the 31-year-old cricketer boasts his most impressive numbers in One Day Internationals (ODIs), amassing 2605 runs at an average of 32.56, including six centuries and 14 half-centuries.
190 Pakistanis gear up for the Asian Games 2023
The Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) is poised to make a mark at the upcoming Asian Games, as they have meticulously curated a contingent of 262 athletes and officials set to compete in Hangzhou, China –starting September 23, 2023.
Before the finalization of the contingent, a provisional list featuring 280 athletes and officials, along with 14 additional contingent officials, was submitted to the Asian Games Organizing Committee for approval.
Pakistan's largest representation in the Asian Games will be in Cricket, with 39 players and officials ready to make their mark in both men's and women's competitions.
Following closely is Athletics, which will have 22 representatives participating in various disciplines. Hockey, a sport close to the nation's heart, will see 21 members donning Pakistan's colors in the 2023 Asian Games.
The journey to the Asian Games for Pakistani athletes begins soon, with the first batch comprising Sailing and Volleyball players and officials scheduled to arrive in Hangzhou on September 15.
— Pakistan Olympic Association (@NOCPakistan) September 2, 2023
This impressive assembly comprises 137 male and 53 female athletes, bolstered by a support team of 72 officials. However, it is noteworthy that Pakistan will participate in 24 sports, as their E-sport team decided to withdraw from the competition.
The withdrawal of the E-sport team was an unexpected twist in Pakistan's preparations for the Asian Games.
An official from the POA confirmed that the decision was not financially motivated, dispelling any notions of financial constraints. Rather, it stemmed from an internal issue within the team.
One of the team members expressed their inability to participate in the Asian Games, which led to the team's inability to field a complete squad for the event. Pakistan's E-sport dreams, once buoyed by a 12-member squad, now have to be deferred to a later date.
In addition to the E-sport team, the Fencing team faced a similar setback. Due to the challenge of securing sponsors, five athletes and two officials withdrew from the Asian Games.
Consequently, Pakistan will now be represented by only one athlete in Fencing, with Mujadid Awan.
Further complicating matters, Taekwondo saw a change in its lineup. Najia Rasool, initially designated as the official accompanying the Taekwondo squad, was withdrawn. This decision followed an unfortunate injury that befell athlete Fatima, rendering her unfit to compete at the Asian Games.
In a surprising move, several prominent figures in Pakistani sports were also removed from the final squad list.
