As the world observes World Glacier Day, experts raise concerns over the alarming rate at which glaciers in Azad Kashmir are melting due to climate change.
According to climate experts, Azad Kashmir has 224 glaciers covering an area of 109 square kilometers, all located in the Neelum Valley.
Dr. Sardar Muhammad Rafiq, a climate change expert, stated that the glaciers in Azad Kashmir are melting at an accelerated pace. He warned that the region’s temperature has risen more than the global average, with an increase of over two degrees Celsius in the last 60 years.
"If this trend continues, there is a risk that all glaciers in Azad Kashmir will disappear within the next 50 years," Dr. Rafiq cautioned.
He further highlighted that 80% of the region’s clean water supply comes from these glaciers, making their preservation a critical necessity. Urging immediate action, he emphasized the need for special measures to protect these vital ice reserves

He stated that glaciers play a key role in ensuring clean water supply and maintaining the natural balance of the ecosystem.
Pakistan is home to more than 13,000 glaciers, but over 10,000 are melting rapidly due to climate change, increasing the risk of floods and droughts. Referring to the 2022 floods, he pointed out that they were a stark reminder of the severe climate threats facing Pakistan, causing $30 billion in damages.
Reaffirming his commitment to glacier conservation, PM Shehbaz Sharif called on the international community to extend greater support to countries like Pakistan in tackling climate challenges.
