Pakistan has achieved a significant milestone in its aquaculture sector with its first shrimp export shipment to Vietnam, marking the country's entry into the $57 billion global shrimp farming industry.
The inaugural 21-ton shipment from the Muzaffargarh shrimp farm pilot project represents the first success of collaborative efforts between the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), Green Pakistan Initiative, and Green Corporate Livestock Initiative (GCLI). Additional shipments are being prepared for markets in Jordan and the United States.
The initiative has identified vast potential in Pakistan's coastal areas and Punjab's saline regions, with thousands of acres suitable for shrimp farming. This development follows strategic legislation and timely measures implemented to boost the aquaculture sector.
The project brings together federal and provincial governments, with Punjab and Sindh collaborating under SIFC and GCLI frameworks to attract both domestic and foreign investment. The coordinated effort aims to establish Pakistan as a significant player in the global shrimp market.
Officials have set an ambitious target of generating $2 billion in annual foreign exchange through the shrimp farming sector, leveraging Pakistan's natural advantages and strategic location.
