Cholistan Canal project has ignited a conflict between the Sindh and Punjab governments as Punjab government has defended the project, asserting that water management is its right, while the Sindh government has expressed concerns over its implementation.
The project worth Rs2.187 trillion aimed to irrigate over 7.2 lakh acres of land, with plans to construct a 185 km long canal in its second phase.
Punjab government views the initiative as crucial for improving water management and boosting agricultural productivity in the region.
Azma Bokhari, a spokesperson for the Punjab government, emphasized, “Water management is our right, and no one can stop it. If Punjab manages water within its own boundaries, there should be no objections.” She further expressed confusion over the concerns raised by the Sindh government, questioning why the people of Sindh felt insecure about the project.
The Sindh government has raised objections to the project, citing potential negative impacts on its water resources. Tensions between the two provinces continue as discussions on the matter evolve.
