The Punjab government has announced comprehensive measures in a bid to address the escalating incidents of terrorism and smuggling in the tri-border region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Punjab, and Balochistan.
Based on recommendations from the home department, the government plans to bolster the region’s security infrastructure by upgrading joint checkposts, recruiting a well-equipped force, and providing modern weapons and vehicles.
As part of these initiatives, the vacancies in Border Military Police and Baloch Levies will be filled, as well as change in rules of both forces.
According to official documents, a significant recruitment drive will be launched to fill 62% of vacant positions in the BMP and Baloch Levies across Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur. Additionally, service rules for these forces will be revised to enhance operational efficiency.
The government has allocated Rs527.1 million for the upgradation of check posts and another Rs500 million for the procurement of logistics, vehicles, and modern weapons. These measures are designed to strengthen the forces' capacity to counter threats effectively.
Official documents highlight the risk of attacks in the tri-border region from militant groups such as the banned Baloch Republican Army from Balochistan and terrorists from KP. The upgraded security measures aim to deter these threats.
The upgraded joint check posts will facilitate coordinated operations by the BMP, Baloch Levies, and Customs teams to curb terrorism and smuggling. A new agile force is also planned to further improve the region's security framework.
