The excessive use of niswar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been linked to a worrying rise in oral and dental cancer cases, according to health experts.
Over the past three months, more than 35 patients have been diagnosed with these severe conditions at the largest dental hospital in the province.
Dr. Bashir Rehman — a leading dental surgeon who has been treating these patients — said the alarming prevalence of snuff use in the region. “Approximately 15 to 25 percent of the population here uses snuff,” Dr. Bashir stated. He explained that the product often contains various harmful chemicals, including lime, which are known to contribute to the development of cancer.
The surge in cases has been attributed to both local and branded varieties of snuff, which have become increasingly popular.
Dr. Bashir emphasized the urgent need for public awareness regarding the health risks associated with niswar, noting that the chemicals used in its production are directly linked to the onset of cancer.
As the incidence of oral cancer continues to rise, health professionals are urging authorities to take immediate action to address this growing public health concern.
