As the cold weather intensifies, many are turning to various methods to keep warm and protect their skin from the harsh winter.
One such product gaining attention on social media is the so-called "winter warming cream," marketed as a solution that shields skin from the cold. However, dermatologists are skeptical about these claims.
With temperatures dropping, people have been seeking ways to combat dry skin, a common issue in the winter months. While moisturizers are widely recommended to tackle skin dryness, "winter warming creams" have become a viral topic on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, where influencers claim that these creams form a protective barrier against the cold.
Many social media personalities, often self-proclaimed skincare experts, assert that these creams create a layer on the skin to block cold air, offering protection from freezing temperatures. However, experts in dermatology and skincare have called these claims misleading.
Dr. Raman Sharma, a Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon, said “There is no such cream that forms a protective layer on the skin to shield you from the cold. While moisturizers can help prevent dryness, they don’t work to keep the cold out."
According to Dr. Sharma, claims made by products marketed as winter-warming creams should be taken with caution. He added, "Applying sunscreen also does not offer any protection from cold temperatures."
Health experts emphasize that the best defence against cold weather is proper attire. Wearing warm clothes and ensuring adequate nutrition to keep your body temperature stable are the most effective ways to stay comfortable during chilly winter months.
So, while moisturizing your skin remains important to avoid dryness, don’t be fooled into thinking a cream can protect you from the cold. Stay warm with the right clothing, and keep your skin moisturized with a suitable cream to fight off winter dryness.
