Deputy Prime Minister Senator Ishaq Dar asked on Wednesday the Pakistan high commissioner to ensure the safety of Pakistani students in Bangladesh amidst ongoing protests.
According to details, Dar instructed the Pakistan high commissioner in Dhaka, Syed Maroof, to work closely with the local authorities to safeguard the students. Dar contacted Maroof to check on the well-being of Pakistani students, especially those residing in Dhaka.
He emphasised the importance of maintaining close contact with local authorities to ensure their protection.
Maroof briefed Dar on the current security situation and detailed the measures taken by the high commission to support Pakistanis in Bangladesh. He mentioned the activation of a helpline to assist individuals in distress.
Additionally, the Pakistan High Commission had advised the Pakistani students in Dhaka to prioritise their safety by avoiding participation in the protests and staying within their campus hostels during this period of unrest in Bangladesh.
Separately, Bangladesh announced it will indefinitely shut down all public and private universities from Wednesday after protests by students against a quota system for government jobs turned deadly this week, leaving at least six people dead and scores injured.
