As part of the new constitutional procedure, the committee will select the Chief Justice from among the three most senior judges of the Supreme Court, reflecting a significant shift in the appointment process as outlined in Clause 3B of Article 175A of the Constitution.
The 26th Constitutional Amendment
Under the provisions of the 26th Amendment, the CJP's term is now fixed at three years or until the judge reaches the retirement age of 65.
Following the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari signed the amendment into law early on Monday.
Significantly, the selection process for the chief justice will now involve a pool of the three most senior judges of the Supreme Court, moving away from the previous sole reliance on seniority.
The current seniority list positions Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah as the most senior, followed by Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Yahya Afridi. If any of these judges decline the position, the next senior judge will be considered.
A report from The News suggested that Justice Yahya Afridi is the frontrunner for the chief justice position, with government insiders indicating that his non-controversial and neutral stance amidst recent divisions in the apex court may bolster his candidacy.
Overview of leading candidates
Justice Mansoor Ali Shah: As the senior-most judge, he is a prominent contender. He has served as the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court before his elevation to the Supreme Court in early 2018.
Justice Munib Akhtar: Born in 1963, he joined the Supreme Court in 2018 and is regarded as a significant candidate due to his judicial experience.
Justice Yahya Afridi: The third on the seniority list, he was the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court before his elevation to the Supreme Court in 2018.
Clock ticks for appointment of new chief justice as deadline approaches

This new law stipulates that the top judicial position must b e filled three days prior to the incumbent's retirement. Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa is set to retire on October 25, 2024.

Formation of parliamentary committee
In light of the new law, the formation of the parliamentary committee has begun, with the Speaker of the National Assembly seeking nominations from parliamentary leaders. The committee will consist of eight members from the National Assembly and four from the Senate.
The People's Party has already submitted three names for the committee: former Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, Farooq H. Naik, and Syed Naveed Qamar. Among them, Naik will represent the Senate while Ashraf and Qamar will represent the National Assembly.
In addition, the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) has nominated Senator Kamran Murtaza for the committee.
The Speaker has sent letters to the parliamentary leaders of various parties, including the Muslim League (N), People's Party, Sunni Etihad Council, and MQM Pakistan, requesting their nominations for representation.
Parliamentary proceedings
The National Assembly convened late on Sunday night, following delays, to discuss the 26th Constitutional Amendment. Prime Minister of Law Nazir Tarar presented the amendment, which was approved by a majority of 225 members, while only 12 voted against it.
Speaking in the House post-approval, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the need for justice in the country, declaring the day a historic milestone. He noted that the passage of the amendment demonstrated national unity and consensus.
With the current chief justice's tenure ending soon, the formation of the parliamentary committee is anticipated to occur swiftly, paving the way for the new CJP's appointment before the deadline. The stakes are high as the nation looks toward the judiciary for guidance and stability in these pressing times.
Gandapur warns of PTI protests if senior judge is not appointed chief justice
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur on Monday issued a stern warning to incumbents saying if the senior-most judge is not appointed as Chief Justice, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will take to the streets once again.
Speaking in the KP Assembly, Gandapur slated the current government, labelling it "self-appointed" and accusing it of undermining the judiciary.
He questioned the public's recourse to justice in an environment where the judiciary is perceived as lacking independence.
“The institutions created for the protection of the people are being manipulated to serve the interests of a select few,” he stated, emphasising the perception that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has devolved into a tool for political revenge rather than accountability.
Gandapur highlighted the detrimental impact of the unconstitutional amendments, claiming they benefit only a privileged class while leaving the 250 million citizens of Pakistan in a dire situation.
He also lamented the nation's increasing debt and the decline of various sectors, attributing these issues to decisions made by individuals acting against the public's will.
“We will abolish this amendment whenever we regain our mandate,” he asserted, vowing to advocate for amendments that serve the interests of the nation rather than a select elite.
He further threatened accountability for those who have shifted their loyalties, insisting that the PTI would not allow such actions to go unpunished.
In a broader context, Gandapur emphasized the ideological struggle faced by the PTI, rejecting any notion that oppression or force would deter their commitment to their cause.
He concluded with a resolute statement, asserting that the party would not back down in the face of adversity, reiterating their determination to reclaim their mandate and restore the integrity of Pakistan’s institutions.
‘I have not voted for constitutional amendment,’ avers Zain Qureshi
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Zain Qureshi stated that he had not voted in favor of the 26th constitutional amendment.
In a video statement issued following the approval of the constitutional package in the parliament, Qureshi asserted: “Propaganda is being done against me over the matter.”
“I would like to assure the PTI leadership and masses of my constituency that I cannot even imagine voting in favor of this constitutional package,” he maintained.

– Omar Ayub sees constitutional amendment ‘attempt to weaken’ judiciary –
Meanwhile, Opposition Leader in National Assembly Omar Ayub asserted that the constitutional amendment is an attempt to "weaken" the judiciary.
Expressing his thoughts during the NA session in the wee hours of Monday, Ayub said: "Intezar Panjotha to date is missing. Riaz Fatyana's son had been abducted twice."
Ayub lamented: “Why not the constitutional amendment could be passed on October 31?" Was the country would have closed if the amendment passed subsequently?”
“The constitutional amendment’s draft should have been dispatched to the standing committee and law and justice,” he stated.
“The real objective of the special committee had not been used,” Ayub said.
Fazl acknowledges political unity in constitutional amendment
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman commended all political parties, including the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), for their collaborative efforts in successfully passing crucial constitutional amendment.
Expressing his thoughts during the key National Assembly session in the wee hours of Monday, Rehman highlighted the discussions stemmed from the issues concerning the Supreme Court judges' aspirations for extended terms.
Fazl brought the matter to the legislative floor, advocating for a constitutional amendment aimed at ensuring harmonious operations between the legislature and judiciary.
He emphasised the significance of the Charter of Democracy, a document he signed to promote a unified political consensus, which called for a constitutional court but lamented the emergence of divisive forums that contradicted its principles.
“The constitution will remain steadfast, even amid shifting political landscapes,” Fazl asserted, underlining the enduring nature of constitutional commitments between the nation and its provinces. He characterized the Constitution as sacred, noting that amendments become increasingly challenging as its importance is upheld.
He condemned the mistreatment of any political leader and expressed regret for not having condemned such actions sooner.

Constitutional amendment: Fazlur Rehman seeks one-day after receiving final draft
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has sought one day to table the constitutional amendment.
According to details, Rehman's residence has emerged as a political hub as members of both the government and opposition converge to discuss the 26th constitutional amendment.
With unanimous approval on the horizon, law minister Azam Nazeer Tarar delivered the final draft of the amendment directly to Fazlur Rehman.
The atmosphere at the JUI-F chief's residence had been charged, with various political leaders making intermittent visits throughout the day.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has met with Fazlur Rehman twice, declaring after their first meeting that consensus had been reached between the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and JUI on the amendment. Following this, a series of high-profile visits ensued, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who later joined discussions at the residence of PPP leader Syed Naveed Qamar.

‘Constitutional amendment will be passed at any cost,’ says Vawda
Former federal minister Faisal Vawda said on Saturday that the 26th constitutional amendment will be passed in the parliament at any cost.
Speaking to media in Islamabad, the former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) stalwart said: “It takes no time to become zero from hero. They will continue to lament, and the amendment will be passed.”
He bashed the PTI leadership, saying, “All of us have seen the faces of the sell-outs. The PTI has practically accepted the incumbent government.”
“The PTI had sat with the government and demanded with the party founder,” he stated.
Vawda maintained: “These people are themselves enjoying sending the PTI founder packed.”
– Faisal Vawda scoffs at PTI for 'spreading' unrest –
Few days back, Vawda scoffed at the PTI for "spreading" unrest in the country.
Expressing his thought, Vawda took a jibe at the PTI founder, saying, "The PTI founder merely wants to rule the country. Challenging the writ of the government is equal to treason. Let's see who will win the political battle, and whose politics will end?"
Vawda continued to fire salvo at the PTI founder, saying, "The PTI founder is facing the heat as the country is getting back on track.”
“The PTI founder should refrain from playing with the poor children of the country. First of all, the PTI founder should bring his children to Pakistan," he maintained.
“Now the things are getting out of control. The PTI founder is talking about getting rid of freedom and slavery,” he stated.
“The drama of holding protests is being staged to take away the lives of the poor citizens,” Vawda said.
He slammed Khyber Pakhtunkha Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, saying, "Ali Amin Gandapur is trying to put the country's law and order situation at stake."
"The purpose of staging the protest is to take the lives of the innocent citizens. The law and constitution are being violated in the country. The judiciary should take notice of the violation of law and constitution."
"Nobody can even dare to stop Pakistan from steering towards prosperity," he said.
Adiala Jail clarifies facilities provided to PTI founder despite speculation
The Adiala Jail administration has issued an official statement regarding the recent press conference held by leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
Jail officials emphasized that the founder of PTI is being provided with all facilities associated with "B-class" status.
According to the authorities, the PTI founder's diet, study, and exercise needs are being meticulously attended to, with uninterrupted electricity supply in the cell. A dedicated prison cook has been assigned to prepare meals separately for the PTI founder.
The professional cook prepares breakfast, lunch, and dinner according to the founder’s preferences. For breakfast, the menu includes coffee, chia seeds, beetroot juice, yogurt, chapati, biscuits, and dates. Lunch consists of curry with fritters, local chicken, yogurt, chapati, salad, green tea, and mutton. Dinner typically includes porridge, coconut, coconut juice, and grapes. All meals are prepared under the supervision of the Assistant Superintendent.
Furthermore, a qualified doctor conducts medical examinations for the PTI founder three times a day. Recent medical tests over the past two weeks confirm that the founder is in good health. Additionally, doctors from PIMS Hospital also conducted a check-up two days ago.
The founder receives daily newspapers and engages in two hours of exercise each day. All security arrangements for the PTI founder in the "B-class" category are fully in place. The jail administration firmly stated that there is no truth to the rumors circulating on social media and from political parties regarding the PTI founder's conditions.
Kamala Harris vs Donald Trump: Who can shape courts?
As the November 5 presidential election approaches, the potential victor—be it Democratic nominee Kamala Harris or Republican incumbent Donald Trump—faces a reality of limited influence over the federal judiciary. The outgoing administration of President Joe Biden, alongside his predecessor Trump, will have appointed nearly half of the approximately 890 life-tenured federal judges by the end of Biden's term.
This staggering number reveals a significant generational shift within the judiciary, but it also highlights a crucial narrowing of opportunities for any future president to shape this powerful branch of government.
During his presidency, Trump appointed three justices to the Supreme Court, while Biden appointed just one, resulting in a conservative supermajority of 6-3. Both leaders have exhibited a preference for younger judicial appointees, effectively changing the demographic landscape of the federal bench. As a consequence, the pool of judges eligible for senior status—a semi-retirement option that opens vacancies for new appointments—has dwindled.
Currently, 67 vacancies exist or are expected on the federal bench, with Biden awaiting Senate confirmation for 28 nominees to fill these spots. An analysis from the American Constitution Society indicates that over the next four years, 247 judges—comprising 131 appointed by Democrats and 116 by Republicans—will become eligible for senior status, potentially opening new vacancies.
However, historical patterns suggest that judges often time their retirements with the political climate, particularly aligning with presidents from their appointing party. This trend raises the likelihood that the next president may have fewer opportunities to fill the bench than either Trump or Biden.
Supreme court's balance
The ideological balance of the Supreme Court, which currently skews conservative due to Trump's appointments, presents another challenge for both candidates. With three justices—conservatives Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, along with liberal Sonia Sotomayor—entering their 70s, the potential for retirements looms large, contingent on the outcome of the election. The victor will not only contend with the judiciary but also the composition of the Senate, which plays a critical role in confirming judicial nominees. The Democrats face a challenging battle to maintain their narrow 51-49 majority in the Senate, further complicating the nomination process.
Judicial influence beyond numbers
While numbers may seem limited, the impact of individual judges on the judiciary can vary significantly based on their court affiliation and judicial philosophy. As both Trump and Biden have learned, certain judges can issue rulings that hinder a president's agenda, regardless of the number of appointments made.
Jake Faleschini, justice program director at the progressive Alliance for Justice Action Campaign, notes that even with fewer vacancies, Trump could still influence the judiciary substantially by promoting judges he has previously appointed. He cited figures like Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee who dismissed a classified documents case against him, and Matthew Kacsmaryk, whose decisions regarding abortion access have raised significant legal questions.
Conversely, Trump's allies, including Mike Davis of the Article III Project, express optimism about Trump’s potential to appoint what he describes as "bold and fearless judges" who adhere strictly to constitutional interpretations. In contrast, discussions surrounding a Harris presidency evoke concerns of transforming the judiciary into a more activist body, as highlighted by Davis.
The future president will inevitably play a pivotal role in shaping the judiciary, albeit with constraints. Both Harris and Trump must navigate a landscape of fewer available judicial appointments while contending with the ideological implications of their nominations. Harris has pledged to prioritize demographic and professional diversity among her nominees, aligning with Biden's recent appointments, which have leaned toward inclusivity.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the implications of this election extend beyond immediate policies, potentially shaping the federal judiciary for generations to come. The next president’s approach to judicial appointments may well define the legal landscape in the United States, influencing not only the courts but the broader societal fabric as well.
‘Complete number games key to table constitutional amendment,’ says Barrister Gohar
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said on Saturday that it is important to have a complete number of games in a bid to table the constitutional meeting.
Expressing his thoughts, following his meeting with the PTI founder, Khan said: “The first meeting was held with the PTI founder today after October 3, which lasted 45 minutes.”
“The PTI founder is fit and healthy, and he has a high spirit,” he added.
“This is for the first time that the PTI founder has told about the cell situation of the jail. The PTI founder said that there was no electricity in the cell for five days. He is getting no newspaper, facility to watch TV, or exercise for the last two weeks.”
“The PTI founder has said that he will not compromise on the respect of the nation,” he said.
Khan stated: “I had also informed the PTI founder about our meetings with JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.”
“The PTI founder had condemned the arrest of her sisters,” he said.
“We had also told the PTI founder about the development of the constitutional amendment,” he stated.
He stated, “We will meet the PTI founder on Monday again.”
Khan said: “We have made it clear to Maulana Fazlur Rehman that we cannot go for vote until getting the stance of the PTI founder on the matter,” Khan added.
“I hope that Maulana Fazlur Rehman will extend his support to us on the constitutional amendment,” he maintained.

Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari confirmed on Saturday that his party has reached a complete agreement with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) regarding constitutional amendments.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, he stated that the draft proposed by JUI chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has been accepted without any alterations.
Mr Bilawal also stressed that this development aims to strengthen the parliament. "We are making the parliament stronger," he remarked, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in constitutional reforms.
He reiterated that the PPP has accepted JUI's constitutional amendment draft without changing even a comma, underscoring the seriousness with which they approached the negotiations.

"We want PTI to join us in discussing this amendment and not to complain later. We hope Maulana Fazlur Rehman will succeed in persuading PTI to participate," he added.
Bhutto mentioned that discussions surrounding changes to the Islamic Ideological Council were ongoing, indicating that Maulana Fazlur Rehman would be instrumental in incorporating additional elements into the Majlis Shura. He expressed optimism about PTI's involvement, noting that a consultation took place with the party's founder earlier in the day.

The PPP leader revealed that there has been continuous dialogue with Maulana Fazlur Rehman regarding judicial reforms, stating, "We have reached an agreement on constitutional benches."
He stressed that the process of constitution-making is progressing successfully after extensive consultations.
Bhutto also commended the collaborative efforts to achieve political consensus, which he described as essential for empowering both the constitution and parliament.
"The draft has been prepared as Maulana Fazlur Rehman desired, and I want him to present it in the parliament himself," he concluded, expressing hope for a unified approach to the legislative process.
Constitutional amendments: Senate and National Assembly sessions delayed for third time
The ongoing discussions regarding the 26th constitutional amendment have led to repeated schedule changes for Senate and National Assembly sessions.
The Senate session has now been rescheduled for the third time, with the latest notification from the Senate Secretariat indicating a new start time of 6:30 PM, previously set for 3:00 PM. The National Assembly will convene at 7:00 PM.
The Senate had been adjourned yesterday until 11:00 AM today, but the timing was quickly adjusted to 12:30 PM before yet another change pushed it to 3:00 PM.
This continued back-and-forth reflects the complex negotiations surrounding the proposed constitutional amendments, which have not yet garnered sufficient agreement among the parties involved.

Senator Irfan Siddiqui of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) stated that the draft for the constitutional amendment is prepared and awaits approval from the federal cabinet before it can be submitted to the Senate.
He stressed the need for a broader consensus, recalling that post-thirteenth amendment, it became customary for all political factions to agree on such matters.
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif echoed this sentiment, asserting that while the numbers are in favor of the amendment, reaching a collective agreement remains a priority.

Adding to the concerns, Akhtar Mengal, leader of the Balochistan National Party (BNP-Mengal), criticized the government's approach, asserting that the amendments are being pushed through in a secretive manner, devoid of robust consultation.
Meanwhile, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari held discussions with delegations from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and BNP-Mengal at the residence of Maulana Fazlur Rehman, head of Jamiat Ulema Islam (F), indicating ongoing negotiations to build a consensus.
In a previous Senate meeting, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) Senator Maulana Atta-ur-Rehman highlighted the missing presence of several party members, expressing concern over the tactics employed in the discussions surrounding the constitutional amendment. Irfan Siddiqui assured him that the issues raised would be addressed.
As the political landscape remains charged, Syed Khurshid Shah, chairman of the special committee formed to deliberate on the constitutional amendment, claimed that the draft has received general approval.
However, the constant postponements raise questions about the government's ability to move forward with the proposed changes.
Despite previous announcements indicating the government's intent to introduce the constitutional amendment in the Senate ahead of the National Assembly, procedural delays have pushed this timeline further into uncertainty.
As it stands, the approval and subsequent presentation of the 26th constitutional amendment bill remain pending, with political stakeholders navigating a complex and often contentious landscape.
Key items on the National Assembly’s agenda include the presentation of the Legal Aid and Justice Authority Amendment Bill 2024 for approval and call-attention notices regarding alleged large-scale malpractices in the collection of general sales tax.

Another call-attention notice is likely to be presented regarding non-payment of pensions to retired employees of Radio Pakistan, while a discussion will also be held on the president's address to the joint session of parliament.
It is worth noting that the special parliamentary committee on Friday approved the draft of the constitutional amendments. According to details, the development came after efforts were made to reach a consensus on the draft among multiple parties.
PTI top guns meet Imran in Adiala Jail to discuss constitutional amendments
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leaders on Saturday called on party's founder Imran Khan at Adiala Jail to discuss the constitutional amendments proposed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif-led government.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar confirmed that the consultation with Khan was fruitful and emphasized that further discussions would follow.

He stated, "We had a meeting and consultation with the founder of PTI. After this, we will hold additional consultations to outline our next steps."
When questioned about whether Imran Khan had approved the constitutional amendment, Barrister Gohar indicated that further details would be shared in collaboration with Maulana Fazlur Rehman.
He reassured the media, saying, "Imran Khan is absolutely fine," dismissing any concerns regarding the former prime minister's health.
Earlier, access to Khan was granted to five PTI leaders who insisted on meeting him collectively. Sources revealed that the party leadership had initially refused to proceed to Adiala Jail until all five leaders were granted permission, demonstrating a united front among the party ranks.
Five PTI leaders granted permission to meet Imran Khan in Adiala Jail
five leaders from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday received official permission to meet former Prime Minister Imran Khan at Adiala Jail.
This decision comes after a brief stand-off, as PTI leadership had initially refused to visit the jail until all five leaders were granted access.
According to sources, the authorities had initially approved only three leaders—Barrister Gohar, Asad Qaiser, and Senator Ali Zafar—to meet Khan, prompting PTI leaders to express their unwillingness to proceed without the inclusion of their other two colleagues.
Sheikh Waqas Akram, a PTI spokesperson, confirmed via a post on the social media platform X that the request for five leaders to meet Khan had been approved.
"We are now on our way to Adiala Jail for the meeting," Akram stated, expressing that the PTI's insistence on including all five leaders had been fruitful. He added, "The barrister's obstinacy has worked," indicating the party's unified stance.
Earlier in the day, Barrister Gohar, who had been waiting for his colleagues in his office, communicated to Kamran Murtaza, a PTI official, that if Secretary General Salman Akram Raja and Hamid Raza were not allowed to join, they would not proceed with the visit.
In a subsequent development, Sheikh Waqas Akram reported that Adiala Jail authorities had initially barred Salman Akram Raja from meeting Khan, creating further tensions within the PTI ranks.
However, the eventual inclusion of all five leaders has now facilitated the visit.
Numbers for amendments ready, consensus key challenge: Khawaja Asif
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif revealed on Saturday that while the numbers needed for the proposed constitutional amendment are complete, efforts to reach a consensus among political parties remain ongoing.
Speaking to journalists, Khawaja Asif stressed the importance of political agreement, stating, "It is better if we can achieve consensus on the 26th constitutional amendment. This will make it more beneficial in the future. However, even if a consensus is not reached, we still have the necessary numbers."
Responding to a question about the frequent changes to the National Assembly's schedule, the defense minister explained that the adjustments are part of ongoing efforts to foster consensus among political stakeholders.
Earlier, PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui informed the press that the draft of the constitutional amendment has been completed and is pending approval from the federal cabinet. "The draft is ready.
The federal cabinet was scheduled to approve it yesterday, but the meeting was cut short. Once the cabinet gives its approval, the draft will move to the Senate," he said.
The delay in the cabinet’s approval has fueled uncertainty, with a scheduled cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ending without a final decision on the constitutional amendment. The meeting was adjourned and is expected to resume later today at 9:30 AM.
Meanwhile, efforts to build consensus within the governing coalition continue, as tensions remain high. The Senate session, originally scheduled for 12:30 PM, has been postponed to 3:00 PM, according to a notification from the Senate Secretariat.
Despite the government's optimism, opposition parties have maintained their opposition to the proposed amendment. The Punjab government has extended the ban on meeting prisoners in Adiala Jail for an additional two days, citing heightened security concerns, according to sources.
The ban, which initially applied to all prisoners, including political figures, was set to expire on October 18 but has now been extended. However, sources confirm that this restriction will not apply to meetings requested on special grounds.
A five-member delegation from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is scheduled to meet the party's founding chairman, Imran Khan, inside Adiala Jail. This meeting has been permitted on special request, with sources indicating that the Punjab government had already approved it before extending the general ban.

Bhutto-Zardari had also shaken hands with Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) and MWM leaderships.
Subsequently, the former foreign minister held a meeting with JUI-F supremo.
However, the joint meeting of Bhutto-Zardari with all the political parties did not happen.
Earlier on Thursday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif hosted a luncheon in the honour of government senators. Sources divulged that PM Shehbaz and President Asif Ali Zardari also held consultations over the proposed constitutional amendments.
Earlier on Thursday, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) supremo Maulana Fazlur Rehman said: “We had rejected the initial draft, and even today we reject it.”

Proposed amendments authorise parliamentary body to appoint CJP
Details of the government's draft for the 26th constitutional amendments have surfaced, revealing a significant shift in the process of appointing the chief justice of Pakistan.
The proposed amendments aim to grant authority to a newly formed parliamentary committee to appoint the chief justice, replacing the current seniority condition.
According to the draft, the 12-member parliamentary committee will comprise eight members from the National Assembly and four from the Senate, ensuring adequate representation from all parliamentary parties according to their strengths. In the event of the dissolution of the National Assembly, a special committee of four senators will oversee the appointment process.
Under the new framework, the committee will review the names of the three most senior judges of the Supreme Court for consideration. The prime minister will then forward the committee's recommendation to the president for formal appointment.
Under the proposal, the parliamentary committee will finalise the nomination of the new chief justice 14 days before the retirement of the incumbent. However, only for the first time after the implementation of the amendments, the appointment will be made three days before the current chief justice retires.
Additionally, the draft introduces the creation of a Constitutional Division within the Supreme Court, which will handle constitutional matters such as suo motu cases, constitutional appeals, and presidential references. A three-member bench from this division will hear and decide such cases, marking a departure from the existing practice where any Supreme Court judge could handle constitutional issues.
The Constitutional Division will ensure equal representation of all provinces, with its composition and number of judges being determined by the Judicial Commission.
The draft amendment spans 12 pages and outlines 24 key points aimed at streamlining the judicial process while ensuring broader political involvement in judicial appointments.
PTI, JUI-F agree on several key points of proposed constitutional amendments
A high-level meeting between leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) concluded on a positive note, with both parties agreeing on several key points of a proposed constitutional amendment,
JUI-F head Maulana Fazlur Rahman took the PTI leaders into confidence on a joint draft for the proposed constitutional amendments. According to sources, the PTI agreed on several key points of the government's joint draft, while further discussions on the remaining points are expected in the next round of talks scheduled for today.
The PTI delegation, which included Omar Ayub, Asad Qaisar, Salman Akram Raja, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Hamid Raza, and Senator Hamid Khan visited the residence of Maulana Fazlur Rehman for the meeting.
After the meeting, Maulana Fazlur Rehman expressed serious reservations about the government's behaviour during the negotiation process. He criticized the government for its alleged harassment of JUI members, including kidnappings and attempts to bribe key figures.
The JUI chief warned that if such tactics continue, he may halt the negotiation process entirely. "If we are bullied, we will adopt the same attitude," Maulana Fazlur Rehman said, indicating that his party might be forced to take a tough stance if the government's actions do not change.
Similarly, PTI leaders raised concerns about the harassment of their own members. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar said, "If the government's attitude remains the same, we will not participate in the process of constitutional amendment."
He also confirmed that many points had been agreed upon with Maulana Fazlur Rehman and that further discussions will take place in the next meeting.
Meanwhile, the draft of the 26th constitutional amendments proposed by the government allows dual citizens to contest the elections. The draft obtained by Samaa TV comprises 24 key points and suggests major reforms to the judiciary and the electoral framework in the country.
The highlights of the amendment include the establishment of a "constitutional division" within the Supreme Court, which will oversee constitutional appeals and the hearing of cases. A three-member bench, constituted by the three senior-most judges of this division, will handle cases previously under the original jurisdiction of the Supreme Court.

The proposed changes emphasize equitable representation of judges from all provinces, aiming for a balanced judicial structure. No Supreme Court judge will have the authority to hear suo motu cases, constitutional appeals, or presidential references independently.
The draft introduced Article 191A, declaring a healthy and sustainable environment a fundamental right. Additionally, amendments to existing articles aim to restrict judicial review of summaries submitted by the prime minister or cabinet and allow dual citizens to contest elections, provided they renounce foreign citizenship within 90 days of being elected.
The reforms had also proposed alterations to the composition and functioning of the judicial commission and the Supreme Judicial Council.
Meanwhile, the measures to ensure accountability, including performance reviews of judges, are part of the comprehensive overhaul. As these proposed changes circulate, they have ignited discussions regarding the future of judicial and electoral integrity in Pakistan.
Starlink raises subscription fees by 97pc in Nigeria amid inflation surge
Starlink, the satellite internet service provider owned by SpaceX, has announced a dramatic 97% increase in its subscription fees for customers in Nigeria.
Citing excessive inflation as the primary reason for this change, the company will implement the new pricing structure on October 31, 2024, for existing customers, while new subscribers will face the updated rates immediately.
The standard monthly subscription has risen from ₦38,000 ($22.8) to ₦75,000 ($50). For those opting for the mobile regional plan, which allows use of Starlink kits beyond the home or office within Nigeria, the cost has skyrocketed from ₦49,000 ($29.4) to ₦167,000 ($100). Additionally, the mobile global roaming service now commands a hefty fee of ₦717,000 ($429.5) per month.
Moreover, new Starlink kits have seen a price increase of 34%, climbing from ₦440,000 ($263.6) to ₦590,000 ($353.4). These changes reflect the ongoing economic challenges facing consumers in Nigeria as inflation continues to impact service pricing.
Historic consensus on 26th constitutional amendment for judiciary
In a significant development for Pakistan’s legal landscape, all major political parties have reached a consensus on the 26th constitutional amendment, focusing on judicial reform and public interest.
The agreement was solidified during a meeting on Tuesday night between Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and leaders from the Pakistan People's Party (PPP).
Following this, a discussion with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Nawaz Sharif at Jati Umra confirmed a collaborative approach to the proposed amendments.
Leaders from the three major parties and several smaller parties have expressed complete agreement on the constitutional changes, stating that the establishment of a Federal Constitutional Court or a Federal Constitutional Bench would not alter their goals.
The primary aim is to enhance the judiciary's capacity and efficiency. By creating a separate forum for constitutional and legal cases, the backlog of daily cases, especially in the higher courts, can be significantly reduced.
Legal experts emphasize the urgency of addressing the thousands of pending cases across the country’s courts. The formation of a constitutional court or bench is expected to aid in alleviating these numbers.
It is crucial to clarify that the overarching objectives of the proposed constitutional reforms include establishing a High-Powered Commission for judicial oversight. Claims that the 26th Amendment could impose restrictions on the judiciary are seen as mere propaganda, lacking any substantive basis. Instead, the amendments aim to empower the judiciary, ultimately benefiting the public by facilitating quicker resolutions to ongoing cases.
PPP rejects claims of constitutional courts 'U-turn', joint draft in progress
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has rebutted claims that it and other parties are withdrawing from discussions on establishing constitutional courts.
Addressing the media, PPP senior leader and former National Assembly speaker Raja Pervez Ashraf clarified that consultations among political parties are still underway and that a joint draft will soon be presented.
Earlier, a special parliamentary committee, chaired by PPP’s Syed Khurshid Shah, convened on Thursday to deliberate on the draft of the 26th amendment.
According to insiders, the government and JUI-F are preparing a joint draft in consultation with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman will present the final draft to the PTI leadership, with discussions reportedly in the final stages.
The meeting, which lasted several hours, concluded with the committee agreeing to reconvene on Friday after prayers.
MQM-P's endorsement
Dr Farooq Sattar - a leader of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement - Pakistan (MQM-P) - informed reporters outside the Parliament that a broad consensus had been reached on the constitutional amendment. “There is agreement on almost every major point,” Sattar remarked.
Similarly, PPP Senator Sherry Rehman confirmed that her party and JUI-F have aligned on the draft, further noting that progress is being made on the broader coalition’s stance. Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar echoed this optimism, stating that “very good news” was imminent.
Meanwhile, PML-N Senator Irfan Siddiqui hinted at a breakthrough, expressing confidence that the committee would soon finalize the amendment. "There was productive dialogue today, and most parties, including the PML-N, are on board with the draft," he noted.
PTI’s opposition and allegations
However, PTI remains a critical voice of dissent. PTI leaders Umar Ayub and Barrister Gohar Khan expressed concerns during the committee meeting, accusing the government of using coercion against their members.
Speaking to the media, Omar Ayub alleged that PTI lawmakers and their families were being harassed. He claimed that the wife of PTI MNA Zain Qureshi was abducted, while the son of Riaz Fatyana was kidnapped.
Omar Ayub further criticised the government for threatening businesses linked to opposition members and questioned the involvement of security agencies in these actions.
Irfan Siddiqui says draft to be presented in NA on Friday
Despite PTI’s objections, the government remains focused on pushing through the 26th constitutional amendment. Senator Irfan Siddiqui indicated that the draft, which is nearly 90% complete, will be presented in the Senate by Friday.
Informally addressing journalists, he expressed hope that the process would soon come to a conclusion.
In parallel, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has intensified efforts to ensure the draft's finalization. He met with PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari at the President's House to discuss the proposed changes.
Sharif also hosted a luncheon in honor of the coalition senators, which was attended by key figures including Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani and Deputy Chairman Mirza Afridi.
Meanwhile, Awami National Party’s Ameer Haider Khan Hoti confirmed that while the Constitutional Bench has been agreed upon, discussions on whether to establish a Constitutional Court remain unresolved.
The constitutional amendment
Efforts to pass the 26th Amendment have been ongoing for months. The proposed changes aim to reshape the judiciary’s role in constitutional matters, a move that has sparked widespread debate among lawmakers. Last month, the government’s attempt to pass the amendment was postponed due to a lack of consensus and insufficient support in the National Assembly, where a two-thirds majority is required.
While the ruling coalition remains hopeful of passing the amendment, PTI's opposition and concerns over the alleged misuse of government agencies continue to pose significant challenges.
The special parliamentary committee will meet again on Friday as political manoeuvring around the constitutional amendment intensifies.
Constitutional amendments: PTI announces nationwide protests
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced a nationwide protest on Friday (tomorrow) in response to the government's plans to introduce the 26th amendment to the constitution.
The decision was made during a PTI political committee meeting held in Islamabad, where the party leadership firmly stated their opposition to the constitutional changes proposed by the government.
In a declaration issued after the meeting, PTI stated categorically that it did not accept the government's plan to alter the constitution. The party called for protests across the country after Friday prayers, with leaders urging party members and supporters to take to the streets.
During the meeting, the PTI also outlined its strategy for the upcoming National Assembly session. It was decided that only central leaders would participate in the session, with other members abstaining. Opposition leader Omar Ayub announced that he would only attend a special parliamentary party meeting after consulting Maulana Fazlur Rehman on the draft of the proposed amendments.

Earlier, the PTI had scheduled a protest for October 15 at Islamabad's D-Chowk, however, it postponed it after much deliberation due to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit being held in the city.
A meeting of the PTI political committee was held where the decision had been taken due to the majority of the opinions of the PTI political committee members. Sources divulged that PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan had discussed the matters pertaining to the governmental offer with the political committee.

PPP, JUI-F reach consensus on constitutional amendments draft
Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) on Tuesday agreed on a draft for constitutional amendments.
The announcement was made during a joint press conference in Karachi, where JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari revealed that the two parties have reached a consensus.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman, while addressing the media, praised Bilawal Bhutto's efforts in facilitating the agreement, stating, "Bilawal Bhutto played a crucial role in bringing us together on the constitutional amendments. We aim to gather support from all political forces, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)."
Bilawal Bhutto, in his remarks, confirmed that further consultations are planned with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership.
"Maulana Fazlur Rehman will meet Nawaz Sharif tomorrow, and we have also been invited to join for a discussion. I hope this agreement between PPP and JUI-F will serve as the foundation for a broader consensus," Bhutto said.
The PPP chairman added that both parties have historically played a key role in protecting and strengthening the constitution, expressing hope that this cooperation will continue.
"We will meet with Nawaz Sharif to try and form a consensus, and efforts will also be made to secure unanimous approval for the constitutional amendment," he said.
Bilawal Bhutto further emphasised the need for unity among all political parties, stating that the proposed amendments are in the national interest, not for personal or party gains.

NA likely to convene on Oct 18 for proposed constitutional amendments approval
A session of the National Assembly is expected to be convened on October 18 or 19 to approve the proposed 26th constitutional amendment.
Sources revealed that the National Assembly Secretariat has been directed to make preparations for the crucial meeting.
The amendment aims to bring reforms to the judiciary, a move that has sparked significant opposition from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Despite this resistance, the ruling coalition is pressing ahead with its legislative agenda.
The constitutional amendment bill requires a two-thirds majority—224 votes—for approval in the 342-member National Assembly. However, the ruling coalition's strength currently stands at 215 members, falling short of the required number.
The breakdown includes 111 members from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), 70 from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), 22 from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), five from the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), and smaller contributions from other allied parties such as the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), Pakistan Muslim League-Zia, and the National Party.
In light of the ruling coalition’s numbers, political experts suggest that the recent Supreme Court decision on Article 63-A, which allows the votes of dissident members, could play a pivotal role in achieving the required majority.
The government may attempt to sway members aligned with PTI to secure their votes for the amendment.
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, has emerged as a key figure in this political equation. His party’s support could prove critical in ensuring the bill’s passage.
Yesterday, Maulana Fazlur Rehman stated that consensus had been reached on the draft of the constitutional amendment. Today, he is expected to meet PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and will meet PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif tomorrow to further consolidate his party's stance.

“Now the same party [PTI] is looking to sabotage the SCO,” he said.
Recalling the events that transpired on May 9, last year, Dar said: “Every one of us had seen that what had happened on May 9. Pakistan should be the priority for all of us.”

Human trafficking ring exposed at Sialkot Airport
A disturbing human trafficking operation has come to light at Sialkot Airport, involving multiple employees of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and Qatar Airways.
The FIA has registered a case against ten individuals, including six of its own officers, who are accused of facilitating the passage of passengers attempting to travel to Canada and Europe on fraudulent documents.
The accused include FIA sub-inspectors Sulaiman Liaquat, Imran Shaukat, and ASI Sajjad Ahmed, as well as constables Faisal Nazir, Danish Ali, and Nadeem Mustafa.
Alongside them, two traffic assistants from Qatar Airways, Asif Masood and Osama Aslam, have also been named in the case, along with private individuals Mohammad Irfan and Umar Raza.
According to the FIR, a key incident occurred on December 14, 2023, when passenger Irfan was issued a double boarding pass for Milan, Italy, by Qatar Airways staff member Asif Masood. The passenger was subsequently cleared at immigration by Sub-Inspector Sulaiman Liaquat and Constable Nadeem Mustafa, despite possessing a passport that was later identified as fake due to photo alterations.
Irfan was deported from Doha and returned to Sialkot Airport on December 16, where he was allegedly assisted by Constable Mustafa and ASI Ahmed in evading detection upon his arrival.
In another case, passenger Arsalan Aslam attempted to travel from Sialkot to Montreal, Canada, using a counterfeit passport. He was cleared for departure by shift in-charge Imran Shaukat and Constable Danish Ali.
After being deported from Doha, Aslam returned to Sialkot, where he was allegedly facilitated by ASI Sajjad Ahmed and Constable Faisal Nazir, who altered his status to "Fake Pak Passport" to avoid scrutiny.
Following the allegations, an inquiry was launched within the FIA, and once the evidence was substantiated, a case numbered 687/24 was filed under the provisions of the Immigration Act of 1979 and the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

Interior Ministry denies allowing meeting between Barrister Gohar, Imran Khan
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has reportedly written a letter to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, requesting a meeting with detained party Founder Imran Khan.

The spokesperson emphasized that no permission for a meeting has been granted.
Due to security concerns and the upcoming SCO summit, a policy had been devised to prohibit meetings with prisoners, hence the requests are not being entertained. The spokesperson further explained that allowing one prisoner a meeting would amount to discrimination against others, and therefore, a consistent policy is being enforced for all detainees.
The spokesperson reiterated that the interior minister did not commit to granting Barrister Gohar’s request and emphasized that the current restrictions on prisoner meetings remain in place for security and fairness reasons.
The sources also said that allowing one prisoner visitation rights would amount to discrimination against other prisoners.

There are also complaints from PTI workers in KP that their counterparts in Punjab, including leaders and supporters, have been largely absent from the recent protests. This lack of participation has further demotivated KP workers, fuelling their calls for postponing the upcoming demonstration.

Constable Abdul Hameed Shah' son refutes Omar Ayub's false claims
Constable Abdul Hameed Shah, who was brutally attacked during a PTI protest on October 4, 2024, succumbed to his injuries, according to his family.
Despite clear evidence, politician Omar Ayub allegedly started a misleading narrative, claiming that Shah died of a heart attack, a statement that has been vehemently denied by the martyr's sons.
During a televised interview yesterday, Omar Ayub incorrectly attributed Shah's death to high blood pressure and a heart attack. He also falsely claimed that Shah's sons supported this version. However, the sons of the martyred constable, Nauman Abdul Hameed Shah and Hamad Hameed Shah, issued a video statement refuting Ayub’s assertions.
According to Nauman Abdul Hameed Shah, "The medical report clearly shows severe injuries on my father’s head and other parts of his body. I appeal to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, the IG Islamabad, and the Army Chief to provide us justice and ensure that his murderers face strict punishment."
Hamad Hameed Shah also commented, "My father was martyred during the PTI protest on October 4. The CT scan report reveals head trauma and injuries to his chest. Using politics for violent acts and spreading lies for personal gain has become the norm for this political party. There should be no room for violence and destruction under the guise of political protests."
Legal experts have stressed that the perpetrators behind Constable Abdul Hameed Shah’s murder should be made an example, facing the full force of the law for their crimes.

This protest is scheduled to coincide with the arrival of foreign delegations, leading many to view it as a deliberate attempt to undermine Pakistan’s international reputation.
Pakistan’s progress affected by corruption, red tape, weak business conditions: IMF
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has identified corruption, bureaucratic red tape, and a weak business environment as the primary challenges hindering Pakistan’s development.
In response, the government has assured the IMF of taking firm steps to address these issues, including greater transparency and accountability in the public sector. The government has also assured the IMF of curbing corruption and abuse of power.
According to a recent report presented to the global lender, the government plans to disclose the assets of senior bureaucrats to combat corruption. Much like politicians, public officials in grades 17 to 22 will now be required to reveal their domestic and foreign assets, including those held by their families.
This change, to be implemented through amendments to the Civil Service Act, is expected to be completed by February 2025. Once these amendments are made, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) will digitize the asset declaration system.
The government has also committed to strengthening the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to ensure more effective oversight and investigation of corruption cases. Public officials will be held accountable and prevented from building illegitimate assets, the IMF has been assured.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision to grant NAB greater independence, the government has vowed to improve its investigative capabilities and address political accusations that often hinder the conviction of corrupt officials. It has also committed to tackle the lack of convictions on corruption, political accusations and weak investigative capabilities.
The IMF welcomed these commitments, emphasizing that strong governance and robust anti-corruption institutions are critical to Pakistan’s economic reforms and development. However, the Fund also warned that vested interests had great influence in government affairs and could impede or even reverse these reforms.
To further ensure transparency, Pakistan has pledged to publish an actionable anti-corruption plan by July 2025. The country also plans to release a comprehensive report on the implementation of the United Nations Anti-Corruption Convention as part of its broader commitment to global standards.

The government has sought the IMF’s assistance in governance and corruption assessments as it pushes forward with its reform agenda.
Meanwhile, the IMF has revealed that Pakistan will need a staggering $110 billion in external financing over the next five years. According to details, this urgent need came on the heels of Pakistan's successful management of $18.81 billion in external financing for the current year.
The IMF's report has outlined that the ability to meet debt repayment obligations hinges on effective policy implementation and timely external funding.
Notably, the assurances had been secured for the rollover of $16.8 billion in loans this year from countries such as China and Saudi Arabia, along with additional funding of $2.5billion from the Asian Development Bank and the Islamic Development Bank.
Looking ahead, Pakistan is expected to roll over $6.6billion in loans owed to international commercial banks over the next three years, with an estimated $14billion likely to come from global financial institutions by 2028.
Indian armed forces face internal challenges amid corruption, leadership issues
Despite grappling with significant challenges such as corruption, rising suicides, and ethical issues, the Indian Armed Forces are increasingly facing disgrace due to internal rivalries, a lack of joint operations, and questionable leadership appointments.
Concerns regarding the military's professional competence have intensified, particularly in light of its role in U.S. strategies against China. India's military doctrine has remained ground-centric, often neglecting the need for joint operational planning—flaws that were glaringly evident during the wars with China and Pakistan in 1962 and 1965.
Initially reliant on Soviet hardware and training, the Indian Army transitioned to Western systems following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. However, geographical divisions within the army, notably in regions like Uttarakhand and Nagpur, have fostered internal strife among military and political leaders.
These divisions affect military officers’ relationships with local political leaders and often lead to a search for personal advantages, such as promotions to senior positions and coveted postings.
Graduates from military training institutions, particularly from Sainik Schools, dominate appointments within the armed forces. This has created a culture of favoritism, where senior leadership often prioritizes their alumni over other qualified officers, raising serious questions about professionalism and fairness in the military.
A stark division exists among senior officers, where those with experience in counter-terrorism (CT) operations—often referred to as CT generals—are favored for promotions and critical assignments. This bias is evident in recent appointments of the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) and Chief of Army Staff (COAS), which suggest a systematic preference for CT generals, despite concerns over their operational understanding and military strategy.
The operational delays and significant casualties during the Kargil conflict in 1999, which stemmed from disputes between the Indian Army and Air Force regarding helicopter operations, underscore these ongoing challenges. Additionally, the 2012 confrontation involving AH-64D Apache helicopters highlighted the contention over ownership and operational control between services.
In response to China's assertiveness and U.S. dependence on India, there has been a push to enhance military capabilities, with ambitious procurement plans like the 2005 announcement for 126 Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA). However, inter-service rivalries, including the pressure to establish a new strike corps without the integration of the Indian Air Force (IAF), have resulted in bureaucratic delays.
The 2010 espionage case involving Indian diplomat Madhuri Gupta brought to light the internal conflicts between the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW). Gupta's case not only exposed issues within espionage matters but also highlighted the internal power struggles affecting India's intelligence agencies.
Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, there has been an effort to address the inefficiencies of the previous 17 single-service commands and to realign the military structure according to successful international models. However, the influence of internal conflicts and political dynamics remains a significant challenge for the Indian Armed Forces moving forward.
ECP announces by-election schedule for PP-139 Ferozewala

In the February general election this year, Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain had been elected from the same constituency. He vacated the seat after which a by-election was held that Rana Afzaal won. He had bagged 48,850 votes against PTI-backed Sunni Ittehad Council’s Ejaz Hussain Bhatti, who managed to secure 30,122 votes. TLP candidate Rafaqat Ali secured 4,809 votes.
District Returning Officer Shahid Imran Marth, along with Returning Officer Usman Jalees and Assistant Returning Officer Adeel Khan, have been appointed to oversee the by-election process in PP-139.
SCO summit: Bilawal laments PTI’s decision to stage protest on Oct 15
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari lamented on Friday the decision of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to stage a protest on October 15 at D-Chowk during the forthcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
Expressing his thoughts on Samaa TV programme, the former foreign minister said: “The PTI needs to take a right decision. Staging the protest during the visits of the Chinese premier and other heads of state will harm the country.”
In connection with the constitutional amendment, Bhutto-Zardari said: “The number games are complete. The constitutional amendment can also take place before October 25.”
“The government wants to take all the political parties on board despite having the majority. Hopefully, the meeting with the opposition parties will reap the benefits,” he added.
Bhutto-Zardari made it clear that the PTI had not come up with any proposal. He scoffed at the PTI, saying, “On one side, the PTI is looking to seek time. On the other side, the PTI talks to sabotage the amendment.”
“We are ready to talk, but the PTI should come up with its draft,” he said.
He said: “It will be a huge achievement to bring change in the judicial system.”
SCO summit in Pakistan faces political turmoil from PTI
As Pakistan prepares to host a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has raised concerns about potential disruptions to the nation's international image and stability following its announcement to stage protest.
The summit, which is expected to draw distinguished guests from various nations, marks a significant opportunity for Pakistan to bolster its international standing.
However, PTI’s recent announcement of a protest on October 15 in Islamabad's D-Chowk has raised eyebrows and cast a shadow over the proceedings.
PTI leader Sheikh Waqas Akram stated via social media that the party's political committee has instructed its organizational heads to prepare for a large-scale demonstration.
This protest is scheduled to coincide with the arrival of foreign delegations, leading many to view it as a deliberate attempt to undermine Pakistan’s international reputation.
Critics have argued that PTI’s history of disrupting major national events—such as the protests that derailed a crucial visit by the Chinese President in 2014—reflects a pattern of behavior that threatens the country’s dignity.
The recent visit of Malaysia's prime minister and now the upcoming SCO summit seem to be targets of PTI’s political maneuvering, raising questions about the party’s loyalty to national interests.
The party's actions are being interpreted as providing India with an opportunity to excuse its absence from the summit, potentially leading to further embarrassment for Pakistan on the global stage. This has sparked a debate among the public regarding PTI’s motives, especially as they relate to the broader national interest versus political gain.
The PTI's call for protest has raised serious concerns about the party’s priorities.
Meanwhile, the observers are urging citizens to consider whether PTI's political ambitions are worth jeopardising the country's international standing during such a pivotal moment.
PTI looks to sabotage SCO summit, announces protest on Oct 15
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced protest in Islamabad on October 15 as the country is gearing for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit.
According to details, Pakistan is poised to host the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit on October 14 and 15, drawing significant international attention with the arrival of key figures from member states.
However, plans for protests by the PTI on October 15 in Islamabad's D-Chowk have raised alarm over potential disruptions during this critical event.
The PTI's announcement to stage protests is seen as highly condemnable, especially as this marks one of the first major international gatherings in Pakistan in years.
The summit will feature leaders and prime ministers from over a dozen countries, along with approximately 900 delegations and nearly 200 members of international media, including journalists from India.
Given the sensitive nature of the occasion, the planned protests are viewed as not only unacceptable but also deeply troubling. Critics argue that the PTI's actions suggest either external influence or a blatant disregard for national interests.
Fazlur Rehman urges opposition to not stage protests during SCO summit

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Rehman said: “The parliament’s role will be increased in terms of appointing the judges with the abolishment of the 19th amendment.”

He said: “The parliament’s role had been finished with the judicial reforms in the 19th Amendment.”
“The consensus can be reached on the suitable draft, but there is a condition of accepting our draft,” Rehman stated.
“It will be inappropriate politically to get the approval done of the constitutional amendment without reaching any consensus,” he stated.
Rehman said: “If we had to give the votes, we had done with the process.”
“There is a need to reach consensus during the presence of the friendly countries in Pakistan,” he said.
“Nine months had been taken to bring the 18th Amendment. So, we should also be given nine days,” the JUI-F chief added.
Rehman said: “There is an objective to reach a consensus first with the Pakistan People's Party (PPP).”
“There is a dire need to provide justices to the masses by wrapping up their cases,” he stated.
“Whether it is the constitutional court or constitutional bench, both of them can be alternatives to each other,” Rehman said.
“We respect the judiciary. The courts should also need to show respect for the masses,” he said.
He said: “The parliament should not need to sideline the priorities of the public.”
“It is up to the judiciary and us to restore the confidence of the masses,” he added.
He urged the need to keep the judiciary away from politics.
Speaking about his meeting with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, saying, “Bilawal Bhutto has already met with me on many accounts. Even, he came to meet me today as well.”
“It is unbelievable that the copies of the draft of the constitutional amendment were distributed in the parliamentary committee,” Rehman maintained.

'PTI has used propaganda cell to malign people,' says Azma Bokhari
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari said on Friday that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has used the propaganda cell to malign people.
Expressing her thoughts, Bokhari said: “The PTI leaders stage drama of innocence in the courts. The PTI’s social media wing is active to threaten the state institutions.”
“No one should be attacked personally,” she said.
“There are many things that have been presented before the court pertaining to the fake video case,” she said.

Few days back, Bokhari lambasted Gandapur for "conspiring against federation.".
Lashing out at CM Gandapur, Bokhari said: "CM Gandapur's meeting with the Afghan consul general was openly a revolt against the federation.".
She questioned: "Why is Ali Amin Gandapur doing all this? Who is giving instructions to Gandapur?
Bokhari took a swipe at the PTI, saying, "The party that has spread unrest is now looking to repeat the sequel of the 2014 protest."
"The PTI's public gathering in Islamabad and Gandapur's meeting with the Afghan consul general indicate the planning of the adventure in the next month," she said.

CJP Isa questions PTI seeking adjournment in intra-party polls review case
The Supreme Court of Pakistan adjourned the hearing of the PTI intra-party election review case till October 21, after no lawyer from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) appeared in court.
The absence of PTI's legal team prompted Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faiz Isa to express surprise at Hamid Khan's adjournment request, citing family commitments.
During the hearing, CJP Qazi Faez Isa remarked that the court’s previous decision in the intra-party election case had been deliberately misinterpreted, clarifying that the case was about PTI’s internal elections, not election symbols as suggested in public discussions.
Akbar S Babar's lawyer informed the court that PTI had already conducted intra-party elections, but there was an ongoing dispute with the Election Commission.
The chief justice questioned the delay in filing the review petition and criticized PTI’s legal team for not requesting an early hearing.
While Akbar S. Babar’s legal team requested the case to be heard tomorrow, the Chief Justice rejected the request, stating that rescheduling hearings so quickly would lead to unnecessary uproar.
He emphasized that the adjournment till October 21 was granted in the interest of justice, but warned that no further adjournments would be entertained for PTI’s legal team.
Protests block Jamrud road as Kukikhel tribe demands payment for vehicle passage
The Kukikhel tribe has staged a protest near Jamrud, resulting in significant disruptions along the Pak-Afghan highway.
Main thoroughfares have been blocked, causing chaos for transporters and local residents alike, many of whom have voiced their frustration over the situation.
Reports indicated that some tribal leaders have begun charging fees to allow vehicles to pass, leading to accusations that the protest has morphed into a money-making scheme. Drivers have noted that those unwilling or unable to pay are often left stranded, with trucks and trailers unable to continue their journeys.
"The drivers are facing immense difficulties," one local transport worker lamented. "If you don’t pay, you’re simply not allowed to go through." It appears that vehicles willing to pay the demanded fees are often allowed to leave without proper registration, further complicating the matter.
Adding to the tension, certain tribal leaders have reportedly provided space for the banned Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement (PTM) to hold illegal court proceedings near Jamrud, heightening local concerns about security and order.
Transporters have expressed their desperation, calling for intervention from senior officials. "We urge authorities to facilitate our passage and bring this protest to an end," one driver stated. "When vehicles are allowed to leave without control, it breeds chaos."
As the standoff continues, those who adhere to legal and ethical standards find themselves trapped, while those who pay the unofficial fees are permitted to pass unhindered. The situation remains precarious, with many left wondering when relief will come.

“We are looking to bring every political stakeholder on one-page. However, Maulana Fazlur Rehman has his own ideology,” Sherry added.
She said, “We want to move forward by taking everybody, including Maulana Fazlur Rehman.”
Sherry said: “The PPP will come up with its own proposal. However, there is no idea whether the other parties come up with the proposals or not.”
Speaking about Bhutto-Zardari’s meeting with Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif, Sherry said: “The PPP has shared old relations with Nawaz Sharif. It [PPP] also has a history of the charter of democracy with Nawaz Sharif. This meeting is also part of the charter of democracy.”
Earlier, Sherry-led delegation called on Rehman to discuss the current political issues.
'Political parties united for peace in KP', says Barrister Gohar
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said on Thursday that the political parties are united for maintaining peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
Speaking to Samaa TV, Khan highlighted the consensus reached among various political parties during a peace jirga held in Peshawar, which addressed crucial national issues.
"The PTI would be at the forefront of efforts to restore peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. All participating parties had agreed to set aside their differences and collaborate for the common goal of maintaining order and respect for the national flag and constitution."
"The parties have unanimously decided that there will be no slogans against any state institutions in the future," Khan stated. "We are committed to ensuring that the green and white flag of Pakistan remains honourably raised across our land," he added.
Khan asserted: "The PTI’s mission revolves around establishing peace and stability across the country, with a focus on constructive dialogue and cooperation among all stakeholders."
– Govt has no mandate to approve ‘constitutional package’ –
Separately, few weeks back, the PTI chairman said that the incumbent government was "not having the mandate to approve the constitutional package.”
Speaking exclusively to Samaa TV following the parliament sessions were postponed, Khan said: “In the in-camera briefing, all the things cannot be discussed. You [government] are not having the mandate pertaining to the judiciary. We want to hold talks on this.”
Khan stated: “We are having the question that on which topic do we have to discuss? What else do we talk with you [the government] without the constitutional amendment draft?”
PPP and PML-N strike deal on constitutional amendments
Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N) Supremo Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari have reached an agreement on constitutional amendments concerning judicial reforms.
The two leaders met at Punjab House, where they discussed the current political landscape of the country.
Bilawal Bhutto was warmly welcomed by Nawaz Sharif upon his arrival. Meanwhile, the discussions focused primarily on the need for judicial reforms and the necessary constitutional changes to facilitate these reforms.
A key takeaway from the meeting was the commitment to present the proposed amendments in Parliament. Both parties agreed to consult with each other and other political stakeholders to determine the appropriate date for this presentation.
The meeting was attended by several senior leaders from both parties, including PML-N's Maryam Aurangzeb, Rana Sanaullah, Parvaiz Rasheed, Irfan Siddiqui, and Ahsan Iqbal.
On the PPP side, notable figures such as Yousuf Raza Gilani, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Khurshid Shah, Murtaza Wahab, Murtaza Javed Abbasi, Naveed Qamar, and Palusha Khan participated in the discussions.
Following the meeting, the PML-N chief is scheduled to host a dinner in honor of a Saudi delegation, underscoring the ongoing diplomatic engagements of his party.
Oil prices rise on US storm, fears of Israel-Iran conflict
Oil prices rose on Thursday underpinned by a spike in fuel demand as a major storm barrelled into Florida and concerns about potential supply disruptions in the Middle East amid heightened tensions between Israel and major oil producer Iran.
Brent crude futures rose 24 cents, or 0.3%, to $76.82 a barrel, while the U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures were up 28 cents, or 0.4%, at $73.52 a barrel at 0655 GMT.
The world's largest oil producer and consumer has been hit by a second major storm, Hurricane Milton, which made landfall on Florida's west coast, spawning tornadoes and threatening surges of seawater.
The storm has already driven up demand for gasoline in the state, with about a quarter of fuel stations selling out of supplies, which has helped to support crude prices.
Further underpinning prices, investors remained wary of escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, with Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant promising an Israeli strike against Iran would be "lethal, precise and surprising".
U.S. President Joe Biden spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about Israel's plans concerning Iran in a 30-minute call on Wednesday that the White House described as "direct and very productive".
Biden "continues to discourage Israel from targeting oil facilities, but there is growing concern that Israel's allies have little influence on its strategy," analysts at ANZ said in a note on Thursday.
Even with threats to the oil-producing Middle Eastern region top of mind, concerns about demand continue to underpin the fundamental outlook. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) on Tuesday downgraded its demand forecast for 2025 on weakening economic activity in China and North America.
EIA data on Wednesday showed crude inventories jumped by 5.8 million barrels to 422.7 million barrels last week. That was a bigger build than analysts polled by Reuters had expected, but much lower than estimated on Tuesday by the American Petroleum Institute industry group.
However, oil demand has grown this month, according to analysts at JPMorgan, helping to support prices.
"In the U.S., gasoline demand surged by 800 kbd week over week.. Across Asia, flight activity rebounded after being disrupted by multiple typhoons. In China, daily flight activity soared to an eight-week high," the analysts said in a note.
"With the majority of travel-related demand now behind us, the focus shifts to the impending weather-driven rise in demand in the coming weeks."
Fazlur Rehman, PTI-led delegation discuss proposed constitutional amendment
Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-led delegation discussed on Wednesday the proposed constitutional amendment.
According to details, the PTI-led delegation called on Rehman and his delegation in Islamabad. On this occasion, both parties exchanged views on the country’s political situation.
The PTI’s delegation apprised Rehman about the proposed constitutional amendment.
Prominent among those who had represented the PTI were Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Salman Akram Raja, Hamid Khan, and Raoof Hassan.
Rehman was flanked by Kamran Murtaza.
– ‘JUI-F has not accepted polls results from day one,’ says Haideri –
Few days back, JUI-F leader Abdul Ghafoor Haideri said that his party had not accepted the poll results from day one.
Expressing his thoughts, Haideri stated: “The government is claiming that the country’s economy is on the verge of revival. But if the economy is reviving, then the country would have witnessed a drop in the inflation rate.”
“Both the JUI-F and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are in the opposition at the parliament. But if the PTI and JUI-F do not have the like-mindedness over the constitutional, then we can split from the PTI,” he stated.
Speaking about Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-Mengal) chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal, Haideri said: “It was the personal decision of Sardar Akhtar Mengal to resign from the parliament. But we had told Akhtar Mengal to consult us on resignation from the parliament.”
Haideri lamented the situation in Balochistan, saying, “The situation in Balochistan is worsening instead of getting better.”
Confessions of Afghan rioters emerge amid Islamabad protests
Alarming confessions from Afghan individuals involved in violent protests have surfaced in Islamabad.
Several rioters, masquerading under the guise of peaceful protests, have crossed all limits against the state, leading to multiple arrests.
One rioter, Abdul Qadir, stated, “My name is Abdul Qadir, and I am from Afghanistan. I work in Peshawar. A person named Javed in Peshawar paid us 5,000 rupees for one day’s work and instructed us to create chaos at the PTI rally, including vandalizing cars and setting homes on fire.”
Another individual, Amanat Khan, also from Afghanistan, admitted, “I was involved in violent actions after receiving money from the PTI. These rioters should refrain from damaging national property, burning vehicles, and ruining roads.”
Mudassir, another Afghan national, claimed, “We were paid by PTI members to start fires in Islamabad, break people's bikes, and set homes ablaze. Now we are at the police station, and no one has come to bail us out.”
Lastly, Nooruddin, another Afghan involved in the protests, shared, “PTI members gave us two to three thousand rupees to cause chaos during the rally and set vehicles on fire.”
The authorities are urging Afghan nationals to engage in honest work and avoid associating with elements that harm their own country. Strict legal action will be taken against those involved in rioting, and any form of violence disguised as protest will not be tolerated.
PTI founder appeals to UN: “We are not slaves” narrative collapses
The founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has recently made an appeal to the United Nations for assistance, raising eyebrows and contradicting his earlier narrative of “We are not slaves,” which has now seemingly crumbled.
This slogan, originally intended to rally his supporters, has proven to be politically motivated and disconnected from reality.
Following his ousting from the government through constitutional means, the PTI leader attempted to claim that his removal was orchestrated by the U.S.
When faced with U.S. discontent, he shifted blame to key government figures. He also attempted to revive the narrative around the cipher, but even that was debunked by Donald Lu. Thus, his entire political strategy appears to revolve around deceit and negative propaganda.
Now, his call for UN intervention stands in stark opposition to his earlier proclamations of independence, suggesting an undermining of Pakistan's sovereignty.
Engaging international bodies in national issues could destabilize the country and impact its internal politics. Notably, the PTI founder has yet to seek UN intervention for the Palestinian issue; why then, for his own political challenges?
This move indicates a reliance on external forces to resolve internal issues, a troubling stance for a democratic nation. It raises serious questions about Pakistan's sovereignty, prompting the PTI leader to clarify his intentions behind seeking foreign intervention at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization meeting.
Furthermore, soliciting international aid against domestic legal challenges jeopardizes national sovereignty. If he seeks relief, Pakistan's courts are accessible, and intriguingly, he has received support from them. Yet, his inclination to involve global entities suggests a hidden agenda.
The founder's narrative has led to his party members espousing sentiments bordering on treachery. Recently, when PTI's disruptive Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur attempted to sabotage the Shanghai Cooperation Organization meeting, his advisor Barrister Saif suggested inviting the Indian Foreign Minister to speak at their rally, further indicating that the PTI has become a tool for anti-national forces.
Constitutional amendments may be passed before CJP Isa's retirement: Bilawal
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has emphasized that the government will want the constitutional amendments to be passed before October 25 - the day Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa is set to retire.
Speaking on a private TV channel show, the former minister also the importance of cooperation across party lines and urged the government to involve all political factions in the process of finalisation of the amendments.
"The government shared the judicial reform proposals with the judiciary before approaching its political allies," Bilawal mentioned, adding that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) had been given an opportunity to collaborate on improving the system. "Whether it’s about the parliamentary system or the judiciary, the aim is to work together for a better future."
Bilawal further stated that the government had been asked to form a parliamentary committee that includes representatives from all political parties, stressing that the constitutional amendments should not be driven by stubbornness or compulsion, but by consensus.
For the first time, according to Bilawal, Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa has delegated powers to other judges, expressing respect for both Justice Isa and Justice Mansoor Ali Shah. The PPP, Bilawal noted, is striving to pass the constitutional amendments through broad agreement, without depending on influential electables.
“We want to bring forward constitutional amendments that have broad consensus," Bilawal remarked. He acknowledged that the PPP has maintained from the first day that it agreed with Maulana Fazlur Rehman on the proposed amendments.
The former minister also condemned a recent statement by PTI Founder Imran Khan, calling it an attempt to politicize the army chief and making him controversial, reducing the chances of meaningful dialogue. "The PTI founder’s statement has diminished the possibility of constructive dialogue, but our doors remain open for PTI," Bilawal stressed, adding that the PTI has yet to formally approach the PPP for discussions.
Clarifying his party’s stance on the proposed constitutional amendments regarding judicial appointments, Bilawal stated that if they had to favour a judge, they would do it for life. He insisted that neither the government nor the PPP had any intention of favouring any judge; rather, their focus has always been on implementing judicial reforms.
PTI announces fresh series of protests across Punjab
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced a series of protests in several cities across Punjab from October 11 to 14, demanding the release of party Founder Imran Khan and the proposed constitutional amendments.
While on one hand, the PTI will mobilize supporters in various cities, on the other hand, its leadership has instructed party members of the National Assembly and Senate to refrain from joining the demonstrations.
The protests will begin on October 11 in Multan and Sahiwal, followed by rallies in Gujranwala and Sargodha on October 12. On October 13, PTI supporters will gather in Dera Ghazi Khan division. The demonstrations will culminate on October 14 with large gatherings planned in Lahore and Faisalabad. It has also been announced that a nationwide protest will be called after October 14.
PTI Central Punjab President Hammad Azhar confirmed the protest schedule via a post on X (formerly Twitter), urging the public to participate. He emphasized that after the protests in Punjab, the entire country will be urged to converge on Islamabad for a massive protest.
“The protest is aimed at safeguarding the sovereignty of the people,” Azhar stated.
Simultaneously, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has issued instructions to the party’s lawmakers, directing members of the National Assembly and Senate not to participate in political gatherings, meetings, rallies, or demonstrations.
The protests come in response to growing political tensions, with the PTI expressing concerns over the incarceration of its founder and the proposed constitutional amendments, which the party sees as undermining the country’s democratic principles.
Hamza Shehbaz, Mohsin Naqvi exchange views on county's political situation
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Hamza Shehbaz Sharif and Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi on Tuesday exchanged views on the country’s political situation.
According to details, Naqvi called on the former Punjab chief minister at the PML-N central secretariat in Lahore.
Both the leaders acknowledged the successful conduct of the APC in connection with the Palestine issue.
The matters pertaining to the political, economic, and security challenges faced by the country.
– ‘PTI has wanted to sabotage SCO summit’ –
Separately, few days back, Naqvi said that the PTI had wanted to sabotage the forthcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in the country.
Addressing the presser following the appearance of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur in the assembly, Naqvi said: “We’ve got the video of Ali Amin Gandapur. It was confirmed after checking the video that Ali Amin Gandapur has departed.”
“The PTI was of the view to sacrifice the lives of people. The PTI has failed to fulfill their objectives,” he said.
“It is up to the president and prime minister to take the decisions regarding the current situation,” Naqvi maintained.
Lashing out at the PTI leadership, Naqvi said: “They [PTI leaders] themselves relax at their houses, leaving the workers to get arrested.”
KP CM Gandapur faces backlash over speech as critics slam 'cowardly' conduct
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has come under fire after delivering a controversial speech, with political opponents accusing him of fostering unrest and misleading the public.
The speech, laden with rhetoric in support of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) ongoing political agitation, has been met with criticism from various quarters, including claims that it failed to address the governance issues within the province.
Political analysts have pointed out that Gandapur, like many PTI leaders, continues to follow a pattern of stirring up workers with lofty promises only to abandon them in critical moments. “PTI’s history of mobilizing their supporters through high-sounding rhetoric and then deserting them when the law catches up has become a well-known tradition,” remarked a political observer.
The most pointed criticism came from Gandapur’s own admission that during a recent political unrest in Islamabad, he fled from KP House after hiding for four hours, fearing arrest. “He proudly narrates his cowardice as though it were a badge of honour,” said a senior political leader. "This is the same man who claimed he would take a bullet on his chest for haqeeqi azadi, but when the moment came, he left his own people to face the consequences."
Opposition members have also raised questions about the number of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly sessions held during Gandapur’s tenure, suggesting that more time was spent pleasing a certain “anarchist in Adiala” than attending to the province’s needs. They accuse Gandapur of neglecting his duties as Chief Minister in favour of arranging protests and demonstrations aimed at supporting PTI leadership, particularly former prime minister Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated.
“This is not governance. The Chief Minister should be focusing on the pressing issues of his province, not playing a supporting role in political theatrics,” a source close to the provincial government commented. Critics also claim that Gandapur's speech is better suited for entertainment rather than serious political discourse, calling it "a laughing stock."
Gandapur’s conduct, including his escape from KP House, has drawn ire even from his own party supporters, who see his actions as a betrayal. “He has become an object of ridicule among his workers, who feel humiliated by his repeated failures and cowardly behaviour,” said a political insider. “Instead of conducting himself with the dignity of a Chief Minister, he behaves more like a fugitive.”
Questions have also been raised about the workers arrested during recent protests, with allegations that they were a mix of Afghan nationals, locals, and government employees. Political commentators have suggested that the reason Gandapur is worried about their arrests is because they are revealing how money was allegedly distributed to incite violence during the protests.
“The fact that Gandapur is now raising questions about the chain of command, criticizing state officials for obeying government orders, shows his disregard for the rule of law,” remarked a political analyst. “He needs to understand that these officials serve the state, not his personal interests.”
The criticism of Gandapur’s speech has also revived discussions around PTI’s use of propaganda and conspiracy theories. Political opponents argue that the party has long used disinformation to manipulate public perception. “Just like they did in the case of Zille Shah, whose death was exploited for political gain, PTI continues to deceive the public with a narrative built on lies and conspiracy theories,” said a party insider.
In response to the wave of criticism, Gandapur has yet to provide clarification on the allegations, with political observers noting that PTI’s strategy has always been to “cloud the issue when they cannot convince the public.”

This extraordinary event not only captivated local residents but also sparked discussions about the behaviors of these fascinating reptiles.

"How they [global powers] surface on the issue of Northern Ireland and Sweden. It is our topmost priority to stop the bloodbath of the innocent people," said the premier.
"Even the situation in Kashmir is not too different, as innocent people have also been killed there," PM Shehbaz said.

PTI will continue to stage protests against constitutional amendment: Qaiser
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader Asad Qaiser said on Tuesday that his party will continue to stage protests against the constitutional amendment.
Expressing his thoughts, Qaiser stated: “We have been forced to carry the guns with us. We will not bow before anybody and will continue our war.”
“The vandalism at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) House is the attack on the federation,” the former National Assembly speaker stated.
Rallying behind KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, Qaiser asserted: “The elected KP CM has been insulted.”
“The government is eager to go for the amendment, which will change the constitution,” he added.
– Attacked with clear plan –
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur asserted on Sunday that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was "attacked with a clear plan."
According to details, upon arriving at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly after his recent absence, CM Gandapur asserted, "The KP House in Islamabad belongs to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. We were granted permission to hold a rally in a livestock market in Lahore—are we animals? We have not even been allowed peaceful protests."
He further emphasized, "We were attacked with a clear plan against us. Our party is being targeted and our symbol is being taken from us, and our people are being forcibly removed."
Gandapur expressed pride in his assembly, stating, "I take pride in my house," as members warmly welcomed him back to the assembly. He concluded by highlighting the ongoing threats to PTI, declaring, "Those who have been attacking our party are being exposed daily, and everyone is uniting to eliminate PTI."
15th case registered against Imran Khan, other PTI leaders
Another case has been registered against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Founder Imran Khan and leaders Ali Amin Gandapur and Azam Swati in Islamabad.
The case, filed at the Sangjani police station, has brought the total number of cases against PTI leaders to 15.
The first information report (FIR) includes 12 provisions, including charges of terrorism, kidnapping, robbery, attempted murder, and snatching of official weapons. The case also names 2,500 unidentified PTI workers for their alleged involvement in the incident.
According to the FIR, Imran Khan misused the facilities he has been allowed in jail. The PTI leadership, including Ali Amin Gandapur, misused government resources after being instigated by party founder Imran Khan from jail.
Azam Swati is also accused of funding protesters who clashed with law enforcement during the recent protest in Islamabad. The FIR states that the protesters, allegedly acting on the directives of the PTI leadership, snatched weapons, wireless devices, and tear gas shells from the police.
It further states that the demonstrators opened fire on police officers with intent to kill, forcing the officers to seek refuge behind trees to save their lives.
Azma Bokhari sees KP House 'stronghold of terrorists'
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari said on Monday that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa House is a "stronghold of terrorists."
Expressing her thoughts, Bokhari said: "120 of the Afghan citizens have been nabbed during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) protest. This raises questions."
"Nobody had opened the door. Maybe this is the reason that the KP House's door has broken," she said.
Azma Bokhari bashes CM Gandapur for 'conspiring against federation' –
PTI declines to attend all-party conference on Palestine solidarity
In a notable political development, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has opted out of an all-parties conference organized at the Aiwan-e-Sadr to express solidarity with Palestine.
No PTI leader attended the event, raising eyebrows and prompting discussions regarding the party's motives.
Sources suggest that PTI's refusal to participate stems from concerns about displeasing the Zionist lobby and the influential Goldsmith family. The party appears apprehensive that speaking out against Israel could jeopardize the safety of its leaders, particularly those currently living abroad. The decision not to attend is further fueled by fears of losing access to funding from Western and Indian sources, which are critical to the party's financial stability.
Additionally, there are underlying concerns regarding visa issues for PTI leaders in the UK and the US, adding another layer of complexity to their decision-making process. This boycott of the all-parties conference reflects PTI's cautious approach to foreign relations, particularly regarding Israel and its supporters.
As the situation unfolds, political analysts are closely monitoring how this decision might impact PTI's standing among its voter base, especially those who prioritize solidarity with Palestine.
PTI and BLA accused of undermining Pakistan ahead of SCO summit
In a recent statement, political commentators have raised serious concerns about the actions of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), alleging that both groups are acting as proxies for Zionist interests.
With the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit approaching, fears are mounting that these entities have been instructed to sabotage this critical diplomatic meeting.
Sources claim that PTI has been unleashed to create unrest in the capital, while the BLA has been accused of targeting Chinese nationals in Karachi. These actions are perceived as attempts to undermine the growing camaraderie between Pakistan and China, especially as their partnership reaches unprecedented heights.
Furthermore, the allegation extends to both groups purportedly following directives from foreign powers. Critics highlight that PTI's recent activities and their invitation to Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar are indicative of their alignment with anti-Pakistan forces.
Political analysts emphasize the urgency for the nation to recognize these dynamics and call for a collective disregard for PTI, which they believe is functioning as a front for foreign interests against Pakistan's sovereignty and unity.
The situation continues to evolve as the country prepares for the important SCO Summit, with national security hanging in the balance.
Islamabad Protests: Government vehicles misused by PTI leaders
In a startling revelation, it has emerged that the government of KPK’s official vehicles and seized assets from the Excise Department were allegedly utilized in recent protests in Islamabad.
Sources indicate that these vehicles were distributed among political leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), prompting serious concerns regarding the appropriation of public resources for political gains.
Reports suggest that dozens of vehicles, ranging from various models, were collected from warehouses and the Excise Department, eventually ending up at the KPK Chief Minister's House. From there, these vehicles were handed over to PTI leaders for use during the protests. According to Secretary Excise, Fayyaz Ali Shah, the administration facilitated this transfer by providing the vehicles to the Chief Minister's House.
This incident has raised alarms about the accountability and integrity of governmental practices in the province, with critics calling for an investigation into the misuse of state property for political purposes. The situation continues to unfold as more details emerge, shedding light on the intertwining of politics and public resources in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
FIA cyber crime teams formed for arrest of PTI’s Falak Javed
The Federal Investigation Agency's (FIA) Cybercrime Wing has formed multiple raid teams to arrest Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Falak Javed, intensifying the crackdown on her alleged involvement in cyber-related offences.
Five FIA raid teams have been established, with instructions to report twice daily to the Deputy Director of FIA.
The teams have been directed to search Ms Javed’s residence, while the record of her stay at KPK House from July 13 to October 16 is also being scrutinized. Forensic auditing of KPK House has been initiated by the Assistant Director.
Additionally, the FIA is considering blocking Falak Javed’s national identity card and adding her name to the Passport Control List, restricting her travel. Authorities are also in contact with Interpol to ensure her arrest if she attempts to flee abroad.
The investigation also extends to her family members, whose mobile phones will be examined for any potential evidence. The Assistant Director is scheduled to submit an initial report to senior officers by 4:30 p.m. today.
Based on these findings, a comprehensive report will be presented to the Lahore High Court. All suspects in the ongoing case (No. 110) will be pursued for arrest.
Sources suggest that the FIA is determined to leave no stone unturned in apprehending Falak Javed, as part of the wider investigation into cybercrime activities linked to political figures.
Ikhtiar Wali slams PTI for fake claims on Ali Amin's disappearance
Senior PML-N leader, Ikhtiar Wali, has sharply criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for allegedly fabricating false claims regarding the disappearance of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur.
According to Wali, PTI orchestrated a misleading propaganda campaign about Gandapur’s disappearance, which he describes as either a staged drama or a hoax.
In a public statement, Ikhtiar Wali accused PTI of spreading baseless rumours and said the party is increasingly resembling a propaganda machine similar to past communist parties.
He emphasized that the PTI leadership crossed all boundaries of deception with this false narrative, urging Gandapur to resign for his "childish antics."
Wali further condemned PTI’s negative campaigns targeting Pakistan’s military and the state, calling such acts "treasonous."
He warned that if PTI does not issue a public apology for its false press conferences and accusations, legal action would be considered against those responsible for promoting such harmful propaganda.
The PML-N leader’s remarks come as tensions between the two political parties continue to rise, with Gandapur’s controversial disappearance adding fuel to the ongoing political firestorm.
PTI’s latest attempt to destabilise Pakistan fails as government thwarts disruptive plans
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) recent attempt to create unrest and disrupt national stability has been thwarted by the state, preventing its intended sabotage of the upcoming SCO Summit and constitutional reforms.
Over the past 96 hours, PTI and its jailed leader devised a plan to stir chaos, aiming to destabilise Pakistan and disrupt the October 15-16, SCO Summit.
The protest, led by Ali Amin Gandapur, aimed to provoke violent confrontations with law enforcement to create unrest. PTI leaders hoped for casualties that could be exploited to pressure the government and derail constitutional amendments. However, the government's calculated strategy foiled these efforts.
Ali Amin Gandapur, the march's leader, fled back to Peshawar after his failed protest, leaving PTI workers in disarray. Meanwhile, key PTI figures who previously asserted that only Imran Khan would decide the fate of their movement found themselves sidelined, with no negotiations or leverage gained.
The government’s firm response, combined with the apprehension of illegal Afghan participants and the recovery of equipment used to instigate violence, revealed the full extent of PTI’s plan. In the aftermath, many PTI workers face legal consequences, while the government continues its efforts to maintain order.
All kinds of meetings banned in Adiala Jail till Oct 18
All forms of meetings in Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail have been banned until October 18 due to security reasons.
This decision, taken by the Punjab government, applies to all inmates, including the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), according to jail sources.
The ban, imposed due to security concerns, will prevent any meetings between prisoners and their families, lawyers, or party leaders. PTI Founder Imran Khan, who is currently incarcerated, will not be allowed to meet with his legal team, family or party officials during this period.
Jail sources have confirmed that the decision has been taken in connection with the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, which has prompted the tightening of security measures in the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. These precautions are being taken to ensure the safety and stability of the region amid the high-profile international event.
As per the ban, no inmate in Adiala Jail will be allowed to meet their families or legal representatives until the restriction is lifted after October 18.
Imran Khan, Gandapur among PTI leaders booked for vandalism, violence
A case has been registered against several senior leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for their alleged involvement in acts of vandalism and blockage of GT Road during a recent protest in Islamabad.

He assured the public that efforts would be made to clear the area and restore mobile services promptly.

Security sources deny arrest after KP CM Gandapur disappears from scene
Conflicting reports continue to surround the alleged arrest of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur as security sources and PTI leaders offer differing narratives.
According to Barrister Saif - an adviser to the KP government - a heavy contingent of Rangers and Islamabad police sealed the KP House in Islamabad on Saturday morning, with CM Gandapur reportedly inside.
"The Rangers personnel have surrounded the KP House, and dozens of PTI workers attempting to reach the location have been arrested," claimed Saif. He further warned that any attempt to arrest Gandapur would be a violation of his bail granted by the Peshawar High Court, which extends until October 25.

“If the chief minister is arrested, it will be a blatant violation of the court's orders and an insult to the mandate given to the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa,” Saif stated, adding that the legal team is prepared to fight any such move in court.
PTI leader Omar Ayub also claimed that Gandapur had been detained, citing that the heavy presence of law enforcement was a clear indication of an impending arrest.

However, sources within the security establishment have categorically denied these claims, dismissing the rumours as "baseless" and a part of a larger propaganda effort by PTI.
"Ali Amin Gandapur has not been arrested or detained," the source said, adding that reports of his alleged arrest were "fabricated and misleading."
Sources also refuted claims of any confrontation between security forces and PTI workers. "There was no firing anywhere from Peshawar to Islamabad," the ministry stated, calling PTI's accusations of police action "entirely false."
The ministry further clarified that the deployment of security forces, including Rangers, in and around Islamabad is routine and is being carried out under Article 245 of the Constitution. The security measures, the source stressed, are precautionary and not targeted toward any particular individual or party.
PTI wants bloodbath, not solutions: Faisal Vawda
Former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) stalwart and Senator Faisal Vawda accused the PTI top brass of engaging in politics that seeks bloodbath through inciting violence
In an interview with Samaa TV's program “Mere Sawal with Absar Alam” on Saturday, Vawda lambasted PTI leaders for what he described as irresponsible behaviour, claiming that the party’s focus on staging protests at D-Chowk in Islamabad was a deliberate attempt to create chaos.
"It is written in the law not to come to D-Chowk, but they [PTI] say the protest has to be held here," Vawda said.
The senator also accused PTI leaders of exploiting the public while shielding their own families. "They are demeaning government officials, but why not bring their children to these protests?" he questioned, adding that the party is endangering the lives of the poor for political gain.
He further alleged that PTI leadership is using the protest to incite violence, saying, "PTI wants dead bodies; they are doing politics to kill the poor."
The former PTI leader also criticised PTI's Ali Amin Gandapur, claiming that the politician had privately agreed with the government not to come to D-Chowk but reneged on his promise.
"Ali Amin had agreed with the government that he would not come," Vawda claimed, implying Gandapur’s involvement in organizing the protests.
Reflecting on PTI’s past, Mr Vawda stated that the party had once been devoid of violent tactics. "Fifteen years ago, PTI did not engage in fighting, shouting, swearing, and setting things on fire," he said, lamenting the transformation of the party into what he described as a force for disruption.
Vawda also fired a broadside at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government for its role in the protests. He claimed that Gandapur, along with "20 to 25 hundred government employees," had utilszed provincial resources to launch an attack on the federal government.
According to Vawda, this was part of PTI’s broader strategy to provoke violence by staging demonstrations at D-Chowk.
Shifting to national issues, Vawda expressed confidence in the performance of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government.
He also praised the PDM for stabilizing the economy and controlling inflation, citing the reduction of the dollar exchange rate from Rs335 to Rs270 as an achievement.
"People thought that after PTI’s departure, Pakistan would never get back on track, but the PDM government controlled the dollar, and inflation has decreased," he stated.
He went on to add that the SIFC (Special Investment Facilitation Council) was holding negotiations with investors and predicted a reduction in electricity prices, which would ultimately bring relief to the impoverished.
The senior politician did not spare PTI’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa spokesperson Barrister Saif either, slating his statements about India's Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar.
Vawda condemned Saif’s remarks, calling them a further blow to the country's stability. "What can be more destructive to the country than saying that the Indian Foreign Minister calls Jaishankar in protest?" he said.
IHC imposes ban on gatherings in Islamabad ahead of SCO Summit
The Islamabad High Court has issued a ruling stating that illegal gatherings will not be tolerated in the federal capital, particularly in light of the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit.
Chief Justice Aamir Farooq delivered the written order during a hearing plea made by local businessmen regarding protests in Islamabad.
The court's directive emphasises the importance of maintaining order during this critical event, instructing the Islamabad administration and government to designate appropriate areas for any protests.
“It is imperative to ensure that there is no protest or lockdown situation during the SCO Summit,” the order stated.
While acknowledging the fundamental rights of assembly and movement enshrined in Articles 16 and 17 of the Constitution, the court clarified that these rights are subject to legal restrictions.
The court was informed that workers from a political party were planning to march toward the red zone, a move that could obstruct the movement of other citizens.
In light of these concerns, the Islamabad High Court mandated that adequate measures be taken to uphold law and order in the city. The court noted that the army has been deployed under Article 245 to assist in maintaining peace, indicating the seriousness of the situation.
Furthermore, the court reiterated that Section 144 remains in effect in the capital, thereby reinforcing the prohibition against any form of protest or gathering. The Islamabad High Court’s ruling underscores the government's commitment to ensuring a peaceful and secure environment during the SCO Summit.
Police arrest PTI's workers in Lahore amid ongoing protests
Police have arrested dozens of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activists during protests in Lahore.
Demonstrators gathered at key locations, including GPO Chowk and Minar-e-Pakistan, in response to party leader Imran Khan’s call for nationwide protests.
The arrests come as authorities ramp up efforts to maintain law and order, with Rangers also deployed across the city to contain the unrest.
The protests, which began in Islamabad, have now spread to Lahore, where PTI workers gathered at GPO Chowk and Minar-e-Pakistan in defiance of government restrictions.
Police responded by launching a crackdown, resulting in the arrests of several party members, including a woman who managed to bypass security and hoist the PTI flag on Minar-e-Pakistan Bridge.
With major entry and exit routes into Lahore now blocked, residents are facing severe disruptions. Traffic jams and road closures have compounded the difficulties faced by citizens trying to navigate the city amidst the unrest.
The Provincial Home Department reiterated that the deployment of both the Rangers and the army is aimed at safeguarding peace, with a special focus on securing sensitive installations and ensuring the safety of foreign delegates during the high-profile SCO summit.
"The army and Rangers have been called in to restore calm and provide security to key locations across the city," said a senior Home Department official. "They will be authorized to detain individuals who pose a threat to public safety."
There's curfew-like situation in Islamabad: IHC chief justice
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has directed the Interior Ministry to take immediate action to restore normalcy in the capital amid the ongoing protests by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
During a hearing on Saturday, Chief Justice Aamer Farooq emphasized the need to maintain balance between the protesters' rights and public safety, while also ensuring the city's normal functioning ahead of significant foreign visits.
The hearing was held on traders' plea to stop the PTI protests in Islamabad. Addressing Interior Secretary Khurram Ali Agha, who appeared in court, Chief Justice Farooq highlighted the impact of the protests, stating that the current situation in the city resembled a "state of war," with roads blocked by containers and communication services disrupted.
"You have a very difficult task, but you hold a very important position," said Justice Farooq, urging the Interior Ministry to manage the protests while ensuring the safety of both demonstrators and the general public. He pointed out that although protest is a fundamental right, it must not endanger the lives of others.

Justice Farooq further expressed concern over the image the protests would portray to foreign delegations, particularly with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) conference scheduled to take place in Pakistan in the coming days. "What will foreign delegations think when they see a city full of containers?" he asked. He urged the authorities to provide PTI protesters with a designated area to demonstrate without disrupting public life.
Interior Secretary Khurram Agha informed the court that several high-profile foreign delegations, including from Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, were expected in the country soon, adding that the government was under pressure to maintain law and order for these important events.

The court emphasized the government's responsibility to ensure the equal rights of all citizens, while directing the Interior Ministry to implement Section 144 of the Pakistan Penal Code, which prohibits public gatherings in the capital, and clear the city of unnecessary roadblocks.
Justice Farooq also criticized the current state of curfew-like conditions in Islamabad, with mobile services shut down, stating that citizens should be able to contact each other in emergencies.
During the proceedings, the Interior Secretary acknowledged that efforts to reach a peaceful resolution had been made but faced resistance from the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Ali Amin Gandapur, who was leading a convoy of government machinery toward the capital. The court was told that several government vehicles had been damaged or burnt during the unrest.
The IHC directed the Interior Ministry to take all necessary steps to bring Islamabad back to normal and avoid any incidents that could harm Pakistan’s reputation ahead of the important SCO meeting.
The hearing will continue as the court monitors the situation closely.

The protest was part of a broader demonstration organised by the PTI to voice their grievances against the government. Later, the police started shelling inside the Aiwan-e-Adl as well.
The situation escalated when the police resorted to tear gas shelling to disperse the protesters, who had gathered outside the Aiwan-e-Adl in Lahore. A large number of PTI workers and lawyers were present outside the court, as the forces began arresting them.

The protest, called by the PTI, saw a heavy police presence as authorities attempted to maintain order. The use of tear gas to disperse the crowd has led to a tense atmosphere in the area, with several protesters and lawyers clashing with the police.
The situation remains fluid as PTI supporters continue to protest across different parts of Lahore. On the other hand, more police force has arrived outside the Aiwan-e-Adl.
PTI invites Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar to participate in protest
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Barrister Saif invited Jaishankar to participate in the protest on two private channels and said that we want Jaishankar to participate in the protest of Tehreek-e-Insaaf, we invite Jaishankar to participate in our protest.
Indian Foreign Minister come and join our protest for restoration of constitution, India claims democracy so Jaishankar join our protest for restoration of democracy in Pakistan.
Barrister Saif, presenting a strange logic, said that with Jaishankar's participation in the protest, Pakistan will be strong and stand on its feet, if Pakistan is strong, relations with India will be better.
Such a statement by a senior leader of Tehreek-e-Insaf is being severely criticized on social media. Analysts say that inviting India to fuel instability in Pakistan is a very unusual move, Indian minister of Tehreek-e-Insaf. A plea for foreign aid has exposed the sinister conspiracy behind the protests.
Experts said that the invitation to its eternal enemy to participate in the protest has opened the pool of PTI this invitation proves that Tehreek-e-Insaf can go to any extent for its heinous ambitions.

He made it clear that no foreign country, including India, has any interference in PTI's political struggle.
“Peaceful protest is the constitutional right of Pakistanis and no foreigners were invited in this struggle,” he added.
Naqvi warns Gandapur, hints at extreme measures amid protests
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has issued a stern warning to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, accusing him of crossing numerous lines and hinting at the possibility of extreme measures if the situation escalates further.
In a conversation with the media, the interior minister indicated that the chief minister has been involved in actions that have exacerbated the crisis, with protesters hurling stones at the police and creating disturbances in the area. Naqvi emphasized that while efforts were made to resolve the situation peacefully, the ambitions of the provincial leadership have gone beyond acceptable limits.
"We are closely monitoring the situation. If more lines are crossed, extreme measures will be taken," warned Naqvi, without elaborating on the specific actions that may follow. The minister also held PTI leaders, particularly Ali Amin Gandapur, accountable for the unrest, accusing them of inflaming the situation with their rhetoric and actions.
As the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization) conference approaches, the federal government is keen on maintaining order and ensuring the event is not sabotaged. Naqvi stressed that under no circumstances would the conference be disrupted, warning that those responsible for attacks, particularly on Islamabad, will "pay the price."
During his media briefing, Naqvi also revealed that 120 Afghans were arrested in the last 24 hours, raising concerns about external elements joining the protests. He questioned how they managed to infiltrate the demonstrations, particularly as evidence surfaced of protesters allegedly preparing for violence, including bringing weapons.
"There are chats where it was instructed to bring weapons to the protests. Where did these Afghans come from?" he asked.
Naqvi confirmed that 80 to 85 police officers had been injured during the clashes, many due to tear gas fired by the protestors. He indicated that investigations are ongoing to determine how protestors managed to acquire such large quantities of tear gas.
When asked about the possibility of imposing an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Naqvi said that political leadership, including the Prime Minister and President, are in constant contact. "The final strategy will be implemented after thorough discussions, but rest assured, we will not allow the country’s peace to be sabotaged."
He concluded with an apology to the citizens of Islamabad for the disruption caused by the heightened security measures but emphasized that these steps are necessary for their safety. "We are doing everything we can to ensure the security of the city and its residents. The army and Rangers have also been deployed, and we will act firmly to restore peace," he said.
Two PTI workers from Abbottabad were also arrested during the protests, Naqvi confirmed.
