The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued a directive requiring all political parties participating in the upcoming 2024 general elections to ensure a minimum of 5% representation of women candidates on general seats.
In an official statement released on Sunday, the Election Commission emphasized that political parties with allotted electoral symbols must adhere to the stipulations outlined in Section 206 of the Elections Act, 2017.
Failure to comply with the 5% representation requirement could result in consequences, as evidenced by the recent decision to deprive Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) of its election symbol for non-compliance.
The Election Commission has set a tight deadline for political parties, urging them to submit the comprehensive list of both male and female candidates nominated for general seats within five days of the declaration.
The announcement comes following the conclusion of the election symbol allotment process, with Saturday marking the final day for parties to secure their symbols. Notably, PTI faced repercussions for failing to fulfill the mandated representation, serving as a stern warning to other political entities.
