Karachi Customs officials have foiled an attempt to smuggle over 14,000 donkey skins to China, raising serious questions about illegal trade practices and the fate of thousands of animals.
The Customs Enforcement Agency, acting on intelligence reports, re-examined containers that had been previously cleared from the South Asia Pakistan Port Terminal (SAPT). Upon opening the suspicious packages, officials were shocked to discover that 285 parcels were packed with donkey hides, disguised and falsely declared as regular leather products.
According to Customs officials, the export of donkey skins is strictly banned under Pakistan's export policy, due to concerns over animal welfare and illegal trade practices. The skins are in high demand internationally, particularly in China, where they are used in traditional medicines and cosmetic products.
Authorities have confirmed that cases have been registered against those involved in the smuggling attempt. The containers were reportedly destined for China, highlighting the involvement of an international network.
However, a disturbing question now looms large: where did the meat of thousands of donkeys go? Officials have launched a separate investigation to determine if the meat has entered the local food supply chain or was disposed of illegally.
“This is not just a case of smuggling — it's a matter of public health and national concern,” a senior customs official stated.
