The UK government has announced significant updates to the minimum salary requirements for the Skilled Worker visa, set to take effect in 2025.
The visa, which allows foreign nationals to come to or remain in the United Kingdom for eligible jobs with approved employers, replaces the Tier 2 (General) work visa and now includes provisions for individuals working in UK waters.
In a bid to ensure that foreign workers meet the economic standards set for employment, the Home Office has now stipulated that applicants must meet higher salary thresholds, as part of the UK’s evolving immigration system.
Key eligibility criteria
To qualify for the Skilled Worker visa, applicants must have a job offer from an employer approved by the Home Office, and a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) which details the role being offered.
Applicants must also work in a role listed under the eligible occupations category, demonstrating the specific skill set required by the UK workforce.
In addition to these requirements, applicants must meet a new minimum salary requirement which is determined by the nature of the job and the specific circumstances of the visa application.
Updated minimum salary requirement
The minimum salary threshold for skilled workers applying for a visa in 2025 has been set at £38,700 per year or the job's going rate, whichever is higher. This update raises the bar for foreign nationals who wish to come to the UK to fill specialized roles, ensuring they are paid adequately according to UK standards.
However, workers applying for certain roles on the immigration salary list, which includes jobs in sectors with a higher demand for labor, will have lower salary requirements. These applicants must earn at least £30,960 per year, reflecting the more flexible pay structures for specific occupations.
The introduction of these salary requirements is aimed at attracting highly skilled professionals while ensuring that employers provide competitive salaries to foreign workers.
Costs and fees for applicants
The application process for the Skilled Worker visa comes with various costs. Applicants must pay a standard application fee ranging from £719 to £1,639, depending on their personal circumstances. Furthermore, an additional healthcare surcharge of £1,035 per year is required to cover the National Health Service (NHS).
To further ensure the applicant's financial stability, a minimum of £1,270 must be available in the bank account at the time of arrival in the UK.
Duration of stay
The Skilled Worker visa allows successful applicants to stay in the UK for up to five years. After this period, the visa holder may apply to extend their stay.
Extensions are also necessary if the worker changes employers or job roles within the UK. The flexibility of the visa allows workers to explore career advancement while remaining in the country.
