The Senate on Tuesday passed the Digital Nation Pakistan Bill 2025 and the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Amendments) Bill, 2025 with a majority vote amid a ruckus by the opposition benches.
Senate Deputy Chairman Syed Al Khan chaired the session. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar presented both bills.
Despite opposition protests, the government succeeded in getting both bills approved.
Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar emphasized that both the National Assembly and Senate Standing Committees had unanimously approved the bills.
He criticized opposition members for their objections without engaging in the Standing Committee's discussions and for submitting amendments after the meetings.
During the Senate session, opposition members staged a strong protest, chanting "PECA act na-mansoor" and "kala qanoon na-manzoor."
Members of the Awami National Party (ANP) walked out in protest against the controversial PECA Act, with Aimal Wali expressing concerns that the law would restrict freedom of speech and was passed without consulting the media.
It is pertinent to note that the Lower House of the Parliament National Assembly passed the controversial amendments to Peca last week amid protests, with PTI lawmakers and journalists walking out of proceedings.
