India’s preparations for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 have been overshadowed by tensions between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
In a departure from tradition, the Indian team, led by captain Rohit Sharma, will not feature Pakistan’s name on their jerseys, despite the event being hosted by Pakistan.
This move comes amidst a backdrop of escalating political and security disputes between the two cricketing giants.
While the Champions Trophy is set to take place in Pakistan, India has opted to base their team in Dubai, citing ongoing security concerns in the host nation. This decision has been met with criticism from the PCB, which views it as a diplomatic snub.
A PCB official condemned the move, accusing the BCCI of politicizing cricket. "India’s refusal to play in Pakistan, along with their decision not to send their captain to the opening ceremony, is a direct challenge to the integrity of the event," the official remarked.
The refusal to feature Pakistan’s name on the Indian team’s jerseys is seen as an attempt to undermine the host nation, marking a break from the usual practice of including the host country’s name on team apparel.
The official expressed concerns that these actions could tarnish the spirit of the tournament. “BCCI is bringing politics into cricket, which is detrimental to the game. They refused to travel to Pakistan, and now they don't want to send their captain for the opening ceremony. Reports also suggest they do not want to display the host nation’s name on their jerseys. We hope the ICC will intervene and prevent further politicization,” the official added, calling for the sport’s governing body to step in.
The row intensifies as the two nations prepare for a high-stakes encounter during the tournament. India’s group-stage schedule includes a much-anticipated clash with Pakistan on February 23, followed by a match against New Zealand on March 2. This tournament will mark India’s return to ICC competition since their 2013 Champions Trophy triumph under former captain MS Dhoni.
