Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has alleged that elements within the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) are sabotaging the ongoing peace talks between the government and the opposition and pinning it on him.
Speaking to Samaa TV, he expressed his disappointment over the political manoeuvers that threaten the success of the negotiations.
"Take me to any mosque, and I'll swear that I'm in favour of talks and sincerely want them to be successful," said Khawaja Asif. However, he accused the PTI of being insincere, stating, "In the same mosque, I'll say the PTI is not in favour of talks at all."
The defence minister criticised what he described as "other tricks" of the opposition party to derail the negotiations, adding, "These actions will soon be exposed." He reiterated that the government’s leadership is fully committed to upholding the honour of parliament and ensuring constructive progress through dialogue.
"Our leadership is sincere and wants this House to function effectively. The dignity of parliament is tied to the success of these talks. Why would we want them to fail?" he questioned.

Asif urged the PTI to introspect and resolve internal divisions before participating in the dialogue. "I have a clear message to the PTI: First, put your own house in order, then come forward for sincere negotiations," he stated.
Asif's statement comes as the negotiation process between the government and opposition gained momentum with the announcement of the third round of talks scheduled for January 16. The breakthrough came as the doors of Adiala Jail were opened on Sunday, allowing the PTI negotiation committee to meet with the party’s founding chairman.
National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, initially announcing January 15 as the date, rescheduled the meeting to January 16 at the request of committee members. The session is set to take place at 11am in the Constitution Room of Parliament House.
