The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Lahore has uncovered widespread involvement of its own officers in human trafficking operations during 2024, with more officers implicated than smugglers arrested. The investigation identified over 160 FIA officials involved in trafficking networks, compared to just 12 notorious human smugglers detained.
The scope of internal corruption came to light following investigations into the tragic Greek boat incident that claimed Pakistani lives. The FIA headquarters initially blacklisted 87 officers from airport and border postings due to their alleged involvement in human trafficking. Subsequently, the Director General's office recommended placing 31 officers on the Provisional National Identification List (PNIL) for their suspected role in the Greek boat tragedy.
Recent enforcement actions have targeted officers across multiple airports. At Sialkot Airport, the FIA filed cases against three officers for facilitating human smugglers. Similar actions were taken in Faisalabad, where three officers were charged for allegedly helping traffic victims of the Greek boat incident. The DG FIA has summoned an additional 32 personnel, including inspectors and lower-ranking officials, to Islamabad for investigation.
The crackdown extends beyond human trafficking. Investigations into corruption at LESCO and PASCO revealed potential collusion between FIA officers and those involved in overbilling schemes. Prime Minister's Office has established a committee headed by former IG Punjab Police Mushtaq Ahmed Sukhera to investigate the overbilling issue, with findings due within eight days.
