The Pakistan Army under the leadership of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir - Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military) - achieved significant successes in 2024.
The year witnessed over 59,775 intelligence-based operations (IBOs) carried out by security forces and law enforcement agencies. These operations targeted terrorists and their facilitators, resulting in the elimination of 925 militants, including several key figures such as Fida-ul-Rehman alias Lal, Ali Rehman alias Taha Swati, and Abu Yahya.
Furthermore, hundreds of arrests were made, with 73 most-wanted terrorists neutralized and 14 militants surrendering to join the national mainstream.
According to official data, security forces conducted an average of 169 operations daily, preventing multiple potential disasters, including the interception of two suicide bombers.
Clear stance on terrorism
General Munir maintained an unequivocal position against terrorism, particularly concerning cross-border threats from Afghanistan. The Army Chief reiterated the importance of protecting Pakistani lives and interests above all else, expressing reservations over independent terrorist activities originating from Afghan soil.
In recognition of his leadership, foreign publications hailed General Munir as a formidable voice against extremism, underscoring his determination to dismantle the infrastructure of terrorism.
Beyond counter-terrorism, the Pakistan Army expanded its efforts to combat illegal smuggling, electricity theft, extortion, and hoarding. These operations, conducted in collaboration with state institutions, resulted in a notable reduction in such crimes. The Army Chief emphasized that mafias involved in these activities serve as enablers of terrorism, justifying the rigorous actions taken.
Diplomatic and economic achievements
On the diplomatic front, 2024 marked a year of strengthened ties and increased foreign investment for Pakistan. The successful hosting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) conference was a highlight, bringing leaders from China, Russia, and other regional powers to Islamabad. Notably, India’s Foreign Minister also attended, signaling diplomatic engagement despite strained bilateral relations.
Through effective military diplomacy, Pakistan voiced support for oppressed people in Gaza, Lebanon, and Kashmir, gaining recognition at the United Nations. Improved relations with key countries contributed to a rise in remittances, a reduction in inflation, and an unprecedented surge in the stock market.
The establishment of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) played a pivotal role in addressing economic challenges. Key trade agreements, particularly with Central Asia, Russia, and the UAE, were facilitated by the National Logistics Cell (NLC), which bolstered regional commerce.
Legislative reforms and information integrity
To counter the spread of fake news and misinformation, new legislation was enacted in 2024, promoting responsible freedom of expression. General Munir highlighted the detrimental impact of unregulated narratives on societal values, stressing the need for robust measures to uphold integrity in public discourse.
The leadership of General Asim Munir has instilled hope for a stable and prosperous Pakistan. With coordinated efforts across military and civilian spheres, the achievements of 2024 pave the way for peace and stability in 2025.
