The much-anticipated K-4 water project, aimed at addressing Karachi’s water crisis, has turned into a prolonged dream for the city’s residents. Despite nearly two decades since its inception, the project remains incomplete, leaving half of Karachi without adequate water supply.
According to WAPDA, 50 percent of the current phase of the project has been completed. Initially, the project had deadlines set for 2023 and 2024, but these were missed. The latest completion date has now been pushed to December 2025.
The delay has significantly increased the project’s cost, rising from an estimated Rs126 billion to Rs180 billion. Furthermore, the augmentation phase, crucial for ensuring water delivery across Karachi, has yet to commence. The cost of this phase has escalated by Rs10 billion, reaching a total of Rs80 billion.
Residents continue to suffer as the delay exacerbates the city’s water shortage.
The completion of the augmentation phase is essential to deliver water from the K-4 project to all corners of Karachi. However, with significant portions of the work still pending, the resolution of the city’s water crisis remains uncertain.
