Raza Nazar, a law student from Karachi, has achieved a significant milestone by being elected as the secretary of the prestigious Oxford Union.
The union is one of the world’s most renowned debating societies and has a long history of producing prominent leaders.
Raza secured the position with an impressive 590 first-preference votes. His election places him among the ranks of esteemed individuals who have held office at the Oxford Union, including former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, who served in the same capacity during her time at Oxford University.
Anita Okunde, a 20-year-old award-winning activist, made history by becoming the first-ever Black woman to be elected president of the Oxford Union.
Other key positions in the Union's leadership were also filled following the elections. Anya Trofimova was elected Librarian with 660 first-preference votes, while Rosalie Chapman secured the position of Treasurer with 646 first preferences.
The Standing Committee, in order of votes received, includes Veer Sangha, Katherine Yang, Oliver JL, Jennifer Yang, Hamza Hussain, and Prajwal Pandey.
The Secretary’s Committee was also finalized, consisting of Brayden Lee, Arwa Elrayess, Samy Medjdoub, Matthew Chiu, Adam Ballman, Akshay Pendyala, Catherine Xu, Victor Marroquin-Merino, Yeji Kim, Toki Hong, and The Faizan Ijaz.
A total of 1,236 votes were cast in the election, reflecting strong participation in shaping the future leadership of the historic debating society.
