The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has launched a stringent campaign against public littering, with fines of up to 50,000 rupees and possible imprisonment of up to three years for violators.
To curb the growing issue of waste disposal on the streets and footpaths, the KMC has issued notices to several restaurants and businesses across the city.
The notices, issued under the Sindh Local Government Act, highlight the illegal practice of disposing of waste in public spaces.
A spokesperson for the KMC emphasized that the authorities are committed to taking strict action against individuals and businesses found guilty of violating cleanliness laws. Offenders face fines or the possibility of imprisonment, as the municipal body seeks to uphold the city's environmental standards.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab confirmed that municipal inspectors would enforce the law to ensure compliance. “We are committed to maintaining cleanliness in the city, and we will not hesitate to take necessary actions against offenders,” he said.
He also mentioned that three hotels have already been issued notices for dumping waste on footpaths and public spaces. These businesses have been given three days to rectify the issue or face legal consequences.
