India’s stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah has expressed unwavering confidence in Virat Kohli’s ability to rediscover his form ahead of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Despite a challenging run in recent home Tests, Bumrah backed the veteran batter to make a significant impact in Australia, where he has a strong history.
Kohli, 36, has struggled in recent outings, managing just 93 runs in three Tests against New Zealand, averaging a mere 15.50. His poor form has been a talking point, especially after a lackluster home season against Bangladesh and New Zealand.
However, Bumrah remained positive about Kohli’s preparation and mentality as India gears up for a tough series in Australian conditions.
In a press conference ahead of the opening Test in Perth, Bumrah was asked about Kohli’s recent struggles and his readiness to face Australia's formidable bowling attack. Without hesitation, the Indian pacer stood by his senior teammate, emphasizing that one or two bad series do not define a player of Kohli’s caliber.
"I don't have to say anything about Virat Kohli, the batter. He is one of the greats of the game. I don't need to give him any special input. He is the utmost professional. He is one of the leaders. I made my debut under him. He knows what he is doing. One or two series, here and there, can go up and down," Bumrah stated, showing his belief in Kohli’s skills and experience.
Bumrah went on to highlight Kohli’s current confidence, stressing that the batter is fully prepared and eager to contribute to the team’s success. While the bowler refrained from making predictions, he hinted at a positive outlook after seeing Kohli’s performance in the nets. "The confidence he has at this moment, I have no doubts about how he has prepared. He is looking to contribute. The signs are ominous, I don’t want to jinx it, but he is looking in very good shape," Bumrah added.
Kohli’s history in Australia provides further optimism. With 1,352 runs from 13 Tests at an average of 54.08, including six centuries, the Indian batter has proven himself in the bouncy conditions of the Australian pitches. This strong record offers Kohli a solid foundation as he aims to return to form in what promises to be a crucial series.
As for the leadership of the Indian team, Bumrah will be leading the side in the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma, who is staying back in India for the birth of his second child. Rohit is expected to join the squad before the second Test match in Adelaide, where he may also play in the warm-up match against the Prime Minister's XI.
