Swedish Gender Equality Minister Paulina Brandberg’s rare phobia of bananas has led to a series of unusual requests for meetings and events to be held in banana-free environments, according to leaked emails obtained by the tabloid "Expressen".
The phobia, known as "bananaphobia", can trigger symptoms like anxiety and nausea, often when the fruit is seen or smelled.
In one email sent to the Norwegian Judicial Agency ahead of a VIP lunch, Brandberg's staff warned that she had a "strong allergy to bananas" and requested that no bananas be present in any areas she would be occupying. Another email, reportedly directed at the County Administrative Board, similarly requested that "no bananas are allowed on the premises either."
Brandberg, who has been open about her unusual condition, confirmed to "Expressen" that she is actively seeking professional help to manage her phobia. The minister had previously posted on social media in 2020 about her "weirdest phobia of bananas," though the post has since been deleted.
Bananaphobia, a fear that can lead to significant distress, is more than just a mild aversion. It can be severe enough to impact daily activities and work-related events, as evidenced by the special arrangements made for Brandberg’s meetings.
Despite the controversy, Brandberg's staff insists the requests are necessary to ensure a comfortable and professional environment for the minister during official engagements.
