The Ministry of Law has clarified that no official notification has been issued regarding the appointment of a new chief justice of Pakistan.
The ministry responded to circulating reports on social media claiming that Justice Mansoor Ali Shah had been appointed as the new chief justice, labelling the notification as fake.
In an official statement, the ministry confirmed that the matter is under review, and any such appointment has not yet been finalized. They urged the public to rely on verified sources for official updates and warned against the spread of misinformation.
It is worth noting that Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa is set to retire on October 25. Rumours are abound that the government is making efforts to amend the law to grant an extension to his service. However, CJP Qazi Faez Isa clarified, earlier this month, that he had declined a proposed extension to his tenure amid rumours of age limit reforms.
Since August, speculation has circulated that the government was planning to extend CJP Isa’s time in office. Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah is next in line to succeed him as the top judge.
Sources within the ruling coalition hinted at possible key amendments, suggesting that these changes might involve a uniform extension in the retirement age for superior court judges. These amendments were expected to be introduced through a supplementary agenda.
The opposition has voiced strong opposition to any such changes, with PTI Founder Imran Khan threatening nationwide protests if CJP Isa's tenure is extended.
