The 22nd of September marks a significant day in Pakistan's military history, commemorating the Battle of Dograi during the 17-day war of 1965. This battle played a crucial role in defending Lahore against Indian forces.
The 16 Punjab Regiment, a distinguished unit of the Pakistan Army, successfully repelled 18 enemy attacks over 17 days with just two companies. Their efforts resulted in 106 casualties, thwarting the enemy's attempt to capture Lahore.
A memorial named Ganj-e-Shahuda, located in Lahore Cantonment, honors these fallen soldiers. Each year on September 22, a ceremony is held to pay tribute to their sacrifice.
Former military officers, reflecting on the battle at the Dograi Martyrs Memorial, highlighted the intensity of the conflict. One veteran noted, "Two companies fought against 36 enemy companies for 12 days, resulting in 106 of our soldiers being martyred."
Another former officer emphasized the prevalent spirit of patriotism among the youth at that time, while a third remarked on the continuous sacrifices made by the Pakistani military since the country's inception.
This annual commemoration serves as a reminder of the significant role played by the 16 Punjab Regiment in defending Lahore during the 1965 war.
