The stage is set for a monumental clash in the boxing world as former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson prepares to take on YouTube sensation-turned-professional boxer Jake Paul in an eight-round match this Friday.
The event, marking Netflix's first venture into the sporting world, has generated widespread attention, drawing fans and critics alike.
Paul, 27, has quickly risen through the ranks of boxing, turning his early fame from social media into a legitimate sports career. With a professional record of 10-1, including seven knockouts, the Ohio native’s momentum was solidified with a decisive victory over Mike Perry, a veteran of UFC and Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship, this past July.
However, standing opposite Paul in the ring is the legendary Tyson, now 58, whose unparalleled career has spanned decades and whose ferocity in the ring remains etched in history.
This fight marks Tyson's return to the professional boxing scene for the first time since his loss to Kevin McBride in June 2005. Tyson, who had retired shortly after that defeat, made his return to the sport with an exhibition bout against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020.
Despite being 58 years old, Tyson, with a career record of 50-6 and 44 knockouts, is determined to silence critics who question his ability to compete at the highest level. "I’m just ready to fight," Tyson stated firmly at a media event on Wednesday evening. His calm demeanor and limited remarks contrasted with Paul’s more boisterous presence.
While Tyson kept his focus solely on Paul, the 27-year-old Paul was in his element, eager to talk up his upcoming fight. "Excitement. Big fights, big knockouts," Paul said, emphasizing his intent to bring new energy to the sport. Paul has repeatedly stated that he aims to become the biggest superstar in boxing, contrasting his approach to that of fighters like Floyd Mayweather Jr., who Paul criticized for his more tactical, less exciting bouts.
In a display of confidence, Paul issued a series of spontaneous bets to the other fighters at the event, offering to wager fight purses and even as little as $20 if he were to lose to Tyson.
The media event also showcased the star power of other boxers, but all eyes were on the showdown between Tyson and Paul, which has captured the public’s imagination in the lead-up to the bout.
Tyson, however, is not fazed by the circus-like atmosphere surrounding the fight. "The people speak for themselves," he remarked, focusing solely on his opponent, as he treated Paul with the same respect as any other boxer. Tyson’s return to the ring has sparked debate, but for the former champion, the fight is about more than proving his critics wrong—it’s about honoring his legacy and stepping back into the ring on his terms.
The fight, initially scheduled for July 20, was postponed after Tyson suffered an ulcer flare-up. Now, with the event set to take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, a sell-out crowd of 70,000 is expected to witness this high-profile matchup. Despite the enormous turnout, limited tickets remain available.
The main card for the event begins at 8 p.m. ET and includes a co-feature rematch between Ireland’s Katie Taylor and Puerto Rico’s Amanda Serrano for the undisputed super lightweight world title. Their previous bout in May 2022 at Madison Square Garden was a thrilling contest, with Taylor narrowly edging out Serrano by split decision after ten rounds.
