According to experts, the recently announced 10-year UAE "Blue Residency" could lead to hundreds of new job opportunities for environmentalists. Climate activists will be able to reconcile their love of the environment with their need for job security thanks to the long-term visa.
The visa will draw professionals with expertise in sustainability and climate champions from around the globe, according to Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, the minister of climate change and environment.
According to an expert, people with training or education in sustainability could find work opportunities through this visa. According to Libbie Burtinshaw, head of operations at business formation and support provider PRO Partner Group, these include environmental scientists and researchers. “The new visa will, of course, attract new talent to the region, but it is also expected to offer an additional element of security to existing residents, who may find themselves eligible.”
Another expert listed the industries in which the visa would generate employment. The co-founder and chief product officer of a talent-on-demand platform predicted that the long-term residency would increase employment in environmental sustainability fields:
- Environmental, conservation, and governance (ECG) sector: Positions involved in developing guidelines and policies that improve environmental regulations and governance.
- Sustainable development: Experts will spearhead initiatives to integrate sustainability into a range of sectors, striking a balance between economic expansion and the preservation of the environment for coming generations.
- Marine life conservation: Jobs involving research, monitoring, and ongoing conservation initiatives, as well as roles pertaining to the maintenance and restoration of marine ecosystems.
- Climate action: Jobs in this field will help achieve global climate goals, such as lowering carbon emissions and boosting the use of renewable energy sources.
According to an expert, “These roles will play a pivotal role in positioning the UAE as a frontrunner in sustainability and environmental conservation.”
Earlier, the UAE Cabinet had sought applications for the Blue Residency from sustainability experts and advocates through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security. It's unclear right now, though, if the applications are still open.
The government states that those who have contributed to environmental protection are eligible for a 10-year visa, including marine life, land-based ecosystems, air quality, sustainability technologies or circular economy. Members of international organisations, associations and non-governmental organisations, global award winners, and distinguished activists and researchers will all receive the visa.
Applicants for the Blue Visa need to be knowledgeable in a wide range of specialized fields. “Essential expertise includes environmental sciences, sustainable development practices, marine biology, and policy-making related to climate action and conservation.”
The expert sees the visa enhancing opportunities for freelancers and consultants in the UAE. “The Blue Visa significantly enriches prospects for freelancers and consultants specialising in the environmental and sustainability sectors. By offering extended residency options, it provides these professionals with a stable and attractive base to operate within the UAE, fostering both personal growth and professional development.”
The UAE has multiple long-term residency options for eligible residents. These include 10-year Golden Visas for investors, entrepreneurs, scientists, outstanding students and graduates and humanitarian pioneers, among others. A five-year residency called Green Visas are available for skilled professionals, freelancers, investors and entrepreneurs.
