For the next three days, West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand are expected to experience "severe" heatwave conditions, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are expected to prevail in many places over Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, and Bihar, as well as in some parts over Jharkhand, until May 1. After that, on May 2, heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to occur in isolated places over these areas, according to an official statement from IMD.
Over the next five days, heatwave conditions are predicted in isolated areas over Rayalaseema, Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh; in Telangana from April 29 to May 1, in Kerala and in Konkan on April 29.
Furthermore, Telangana on May 2, Konkan and Goa from April 30 to May 1, and Kerala and Mahe, Coastal Karnataka, are expected to experience warm and muggy weather over the next five days.
A red alert has been issued because severe heatwave conditions have been present in Gangetic West Bengal for several days, according to senior scientist Soma Sen Roy. "Severe heatwave conditions are also being faced in Odisha, especially in North Odisha, although not like in West Bengal but severe enough for many days and hence a red alert has been issued for this part too," he said.
Up until April 30, IMD has predicted widespread light to moderate rainfall or snowfall with thunderstorms and lightning over India-held Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. On April 29, there's also a chance of hailstorms in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
“Isolated to scattered rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is likely over Punjab and Haryana-Chandigarh on April 29. Isolated rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is expected in Uttar Pradesh on April 29," the IMD said.
