Sri Lanka's World Cup campaign has suffered a setback as skipper Dasun Shanaka has been ruled out of the tournament due to a thigh injury.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Saturday that Chamika Karunaratne has been approved as Shanaka's replacement in the squad.
Shanaka sustained a right thigh muscle injury during a six-wicket loss to Pakistan on Tuesday. A medical assessment indicated that the 32-year-old captain would require approximately three weeks to recover from the injury.
In response to this, the ICC's Event Technical Committee for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 has given its approval for Chamika Karunaratne to take Shanaka's place in the Sri Lankan squad.
Sri Lanka, currently ranked seventh in the tournament standings after losing their first two games, is set to face Australia on Monday in Lucknow as they strive to revive their World Cup campaign.
