The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced the successful completion of the printing process for 260 million ballot papers, set to be utilised in the general elections scheduled for February 8, 2024.
The Commission further revealed that the extensive task of delivering the printed ballots is currently underway and is expected to conclude by tomorrow.
A press statement issued by the Election Commission highlighted that the meticulous printing process involved three government press agencies, ensuring the production of ballot papers for all 859 constituencies across the nation.
Moreover, the electoral watchdog, in compliance with court decisions necessitating reprinting in certain constituencies, the Election Commission managed to complete the timely printing of all ballots, with delivery now in progress nationwide.
Comparing the current election's printing endeavor with the 2018 general elections, the Election Commission shared that 22 crore ballot papers were printed during the previous polls, utilising 800 tonnes of special security paper.
However, for the 2024 elections, a substantial increase was witnessed with 26 million ballot papers printed, requiring 2,170 tonnes of specialized security paper. The surge in ballot paper production was attributed to a significant rise in the number of candidates, surpassing the figures recorded in the 2018 elections.
Acknowledging the challenges faced during the printing process, including legal disputes and the management of an increased number of candidates, the Election Commission's spokesperson stressed the Commission's commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities within the stipulated timeframe.
Despite the hurdles encountered, the spokesperson affirmed that the Commission's timely actions ensure that all eligible voters will have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming general elections on February 8.
