The 34-year-old Belarusian, Azarenka, overcame second-set challenges to defeat Russia's Anna Kalinskaya with a score of 6-1, 7-6 (10/8). Despite her early dominance, Azarenka faced resistance as Kalinskaya found her rhythm in the second set.
The match reached a dramatic conclusion, with Azarenka securing victory in the tiebreak after surviving five match points.
On the other hand, Sofia Kenin, a former Australian Open winner, suffered a surprising defeat at the hands of Arina Rodionova. Rodionova, ranked a career-high 113, displayed impressive form after a successful year on the ITF Circuit, winning seven titles.
Kenin's struggle was evident with 52 unforced errors, leading to a 7-5, 7-6 (9/7) loss.
Reflecting on her victory, Rodionova expressed the joy of playing in front of a large crowd at Pat Rafter Arena, emphasising the hard work put in during the ITF Circuit tournaments.
In the men's draw, upsets occurred as fifth-seeded American Sebastian Korda and sixth-seeded Argentinian Sebastian Baez were both eliminated. Yannick Hanfman defeated Korda 7-5, 6-4, while Lukas Klein secured victory against Baez with a scoreline of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Australian qualifier James Duckworth also claimed a notable win by defeating American JJ Wolf 6-3, 6-4.
