In a recent announcement, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) declared the implementation of a SIM Disowning fine, ranging up to Rs. 200, starting January 1, 2024.
This charge will apply to Cellular Mobile Operators in Pakistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) for SIMs with a retention period of less than six months.
To facilitate consumers in assessing the status of their registered SIMs, PTA provides various methods, including visiting https://cnic.sims.pk/ or sending an SMS with their CNIC number (without dashes) to 668 (standard charges apply). The deadline for this action is set for December 31, 2023.
PTA emphasized its commitment to national safety and security through this decision while ensuring the continuous delivery of high-quality telecom services. The introduction of the SIM disowning charge aims to promote responsible SIM card usage and contribute to a secure and efficient telecom environment in Pakistan, as well as in the adjoining regions of AJK and GB.
Additionally, PTA highlighted a one-time waiver for the SIM disowning charge in cases of illegal SIM issuance without the knowledge or consent of the consumer, offering protection against unintended charges.
