In a recent advisory, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has urged farmers across the country to prepare for the Rabi season while considering the changing weather patterns expected in the last quarter of this year.
Here's a breakdown of the key recommendations and forecasts:
Farmers in the plains of Pakistan, especially in the southern regions, have received guidance from the PMD to ensure the timely sowing of Rabi crops and to make provisions for additional irrigation to promote healthier crop growth at the initial stage.
Harvesting hints
In addition to the southern plains, farmers in other regions are advised to complete the harvesting of Kharif crops on time and prepare their fields for the sowing of upcoming Rabi crops in November.
The PMD has forecast a seasonal decrease in temperature and slightly above-normal rains and snowfall for the country during the last quarter of the current year.
Moisture reserves benefit upper soil
As of now, the major agricultural soils, particularly in the northern regions, retain substantial moisture content due to recent weather conditions. This has led to satisfactory growth of standing crops and vegetable orchards in most parts of the country.
However, isolated severe weather events such as heavy rainfall, hail, and windstorms have damaged seasonal vegetables and fruits.
Pest alert
Reports have emerged regarding pest attacks on standing crops, with a particular concern for cotton crops in South Punjab, which could potentially impact final production in those regions.
Seasonal outlook
The PMD's seasonal projections suggest a tendency toward normal to slightly above-normal precipitation across most parts of the country during the next three months, with a special focus on the northwestern regions.
Monthly forecast
In November 2023, nearly normal to slightly above-normal precipitation is anticipated, primarily in the upper regions, including northern Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and adjacent areas of Kashmir. December 2023 is expected to bring nearly normal to slightly above-normal precipitation, especially in the central parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern Punjab.
As farmers gear up for the Rabi season, these recommendations and forecasts from the PMD provide valuable insights into the upcoming agricultural climate, helping them make informed decisions for a successful farming season ahead.
