Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, is introducing an initial version of audio and video calling for select users, as announced by Elon Musk, the platform's Chief Technology Officer and owner.
Musk shared a post on the platform explaining how to activate this new feature, labeling it as an "early release of video and audio calling on X."
This addition follows a series of updates and alterations to the platform's core experience under Musk's leadership, who took over the social media company almost a year ago.
After rebranding Twitter as X, Musk has been vocal about his plans to transform the platform into a comprehensive super-app, offering various services, including messaging, social networking, and peer-to-peer payments.
Teasing this feature back in August, Musk mentioned that users wouldn't require a phone number to access these functionalities, which will be accessible on Apple's iOS, Google's Android, and personal computers.
How to disable it:
Upon opening X, certain users are presented with a notification, "Audio and Video calls are here!" This notification also offers guidance on configuring call settings, which are accessible in the Direct Messages section.
To decline incoming calls on X, users can access their Direct Messages and locate the Settings menu, identified by a gear icon.
Here, they can disable the calling feature. Conversely, for those who wish to retain this feature, there's an option to receive calls from verified users, contacts in their address book, or individuals they follow.
