Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has introduced a new chat memory feature for its AI chatbot, Meta AI, enabling users to personalise interactions by saving specific preferences.
The feature, currently available to select beta testers on the WhatsApp beta for Android (version 2.25.11.13), allows users to explicitly instruct Meta AI to remember certain details, enhancing the chatbot’s ability to offer customised recommendations.
For instance, if a user tells the chatbot that they follow a vegetarian diet while asking for restaurant suggestions, Meta AI will retain this preference and avoid recommending non-vegetarian options in the future. Similarly, if a user mentions an interest in historical documentaries, the chatbot will take note and prioritise similar content when asked for viewing recommendations.
The move marks another step in Meta’s efforts to turn its AI assistant into a more intuitive, assistant-like experience, tailored to each user’s lifestyle and choices.
Meta has clarified that the chatbot will only remember information that is explicitly shared with it. Conversations across WhatsApp remain end-to-end encrypted, and Meta AI does not access messages in private chats or groups.
Moreover, users retain full control over what the chatbot stores. They can review, update, or delete memory items at any time, ensuring their preferences stay accurate and up to date.
The feature was previously announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and is now gradually being rolled out to a wider audience beyond the beta testing phase.
The gradual expansion signals Meta’s commitment to integrating memory-based personalisation across its platforms, as it continues to build AI-driven tools that align more closely with user expectations and habit
