SAMAA Digital, in collaboration with the British High Commission Pakistan, successfully conducted a Workshop on Climate Journalism at SAMAA TV’s Lahore office.
The event featured esteemed speakers, including Sneha Lala, Deputy Head of Communications, UK in Pakistan, and Sana Munir, Director of Local Government Audit Punjab and a Chevening alumnus.
Sneha Lala underscored the urgency of adaptation, warning that failure to address climate challenges could result in financial losses of $1.3 trillion by 2050, with even more profound human costs. She praised SAMAA Digital for its effective contribution to climate storytelling through data visualization.
Sana Munir emphasized the critical role of media in sustainable development, highlighting Pakistan's heightened vulnerability to climate change despite contributing less than 1% to global emissions. She stressed that climate journalists must prioritize "lives over likes" when reporting on climate and environmental issues.
SAMAA Digital Senior Sub Editor Shehryar Rizwan briefed the participants and guests on the safety concerns in climate reporting. He highlighted the threats faced by journalists, including legal and political pressures, limited access to data, and the need for climate training, networking, and advocacy.
SAMAA Digital General Manager Asim Siddique showcased the department's commitment to environmental awareness through impactful digital content on climate change and global warming.
The workshop concluded with the distribution of certificates to participants, acknowledging their dedication to advancing climate journalism in Pakistan.
The initiative aligns with SAMAA Digital's ongoing efforts to enhance climate literacy and reporting in Pakistan, recognizing the media's pivotal role in addressing environmental challenges.
