President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to energy conservation, environmental sustainability, and climate action as the country observes Earth Hour and World Water Day together this year.
In his message, President Zardari emphasized the importance of reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions, stating that switching off unnecessary lights symbolizes a collective commitment to tackling climate change. He highlighted that rising fuel prices pose serious threats to Pakistan’s economy and environment, making electricity and fuel conservation, along with the promotion of renewable energy, essential for a secure future.
The President stressed the need for energy-efficient devices and increased reliance on public transport to curb excessive fuel use. Addressing Pakistan’s worsening water scarcity, he called for urgent measures to ensure clean and safe drinking water.
The President also referenced the devastating 2022 floods, saying they serve as a stark reminder of climate change’s deadly effects on the country. He advocated for drip irrigation, rainwater harvesting, and waste prevention to sustain agricultural development while urging industries and households to adopt water-efficient practices.
“Pakistan is committed to environmental conservation, energy efficiency, and sustainable water resource management,” he affirmed, urging citizens to take responsibility for conserving energy, fuel, and water.
Premier says Pakistan contributes less than one percent to global greenhouse
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his Earth Hour 2025 message, noted that while Pakistan contributes less than one percent to global greenhouse gas emissions, it remains among the most climate-vulnerable nations, facing floods, heatwaves, and prolonged droughts.
He outlined the government’s policies to integrate climate action across all sectors, including the Recharge Pakistan initiative for ecosystem restoration, the National Adaptation Plan 2023, and the National Clean Air Policy 2023, which aim to build a cleaner and more sustainable future.
The Prime Minister highlighted efforts to expand renewable energy, reduce plastic waste, and create green jobs, but stressed that real change starts at home.
“Every action, no matter how small, strengthens our collective momentum towards sustainability,” he said, calling on all Pakistanis to participate in Earth Hour at 8:30 PM tonight as a symbol of unity in the fight against climate change.
Both leaders urged the nation to adopt a sustainable lifestyle to safeguard Pakistan and the planet for future generations.
