Falkland Islands' Andrew Brownlee made history on March 10, 2025, by becoming the oldest male cricketer to debut in an international match.
The 62-year-old cricketer achieved this remarkable feat during his team's T20 International (T20I) debut against Costa Rica, which also marked the Falkland Islands' entry into international cricket as the 106th team to compete at this level.
Brownlee's achievement surpassed the previous record held by Turkey's Osman Goker, who debuted at the age of 59 against Romania in a T20I match in August 2019. The Falkland Islands team, which made its international debut during this series, featured a unique squad composition, with all 11 players over the age of 31 and most above 40. Notably, three players were over the age of 56, although none were as senior as Brownlee.
Throughout the tour, Brownlee participated in two additional T20I matches against Costa Rica on March 11 and 12. Batting at number ten in all three games, he posted scores of one, two, and three runs respectively. In his second match, he also bowled one over of medium pace.
Brownlee’s inclusion in the playing XI was a significant moment not only for the Falkland Islands but also for the sport itself.
His debut placed him alongside an exclusive group of cricketers who made their international debuts later in life, including England’s James Souther, Pakistan’s Miran Bakhsh, and India’s Rustomji Jamshedji.
