The 31st Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards were held on Sunday at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall, honouring outstanding performances in film and television.
Hosted by actress Kristen Bell, the star-studded evening witnessed major wins for Shōgun, Only Murders in the Building, and The Bear, while Kieran Culkin further cemented his frontrunner status for the upcoming Academy Awards.
This year’s SAG Awards, streamed live on Netflix, highlighted a strong presence of period dramas and acclaimed comedies. In the television categories, FX’s Shōgun emerged as the dominant force, winning Best Ensemble in a Drama Series and securing acting honours for Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai.
The series, based on James Clavell’s novel, has positioned itself as a major contender for the 2025 Emmy Awards.
Meanwhile, Only Murders in the Building took home Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series, with Martin Short securing Best Actor in a Comedy Series. The Bear also had a strong presence, earning Jeremy Allen White a nomination, though he lost to Short. Jean Smart, known for her sharp wit in Hacks, won Best Actress in a Comedy Series.
On the film front, A Real Pain’s Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor, adding to his growing list of accolades this season and making him a favourite for the 2025 Oscars. Adrien Brody won Best Actor for The Brutalist, while Pamela Anderson’s dramatic turn in The Last Showgirl earned her the Best Actress award.
The Best Supporting Actress category saw Zoe Saldaña triumph for Emilia Pérez, which also won Best Cast Ensemble. The stunt-heavy The Fall Guy was recognised with the Best Stunt Ensemble in Film, solidifying its standing in the action genre.
Night of triumph for Shōgun
Shōgun emerged as the most celebrated television series of the evening. Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actor in a Drama Series, beating the likes of Jeff Bridges (The Old Man) and Gary Oldman (Slow Horses). Anna Sawai claimed Best Actress in a Drama Series, further strengthening the show’s dominance. The period drama also secured the award for Best Stunt Ensemble in Television.
Colin Farrell won Best Actor in a Miniseries for his portrayal in The Penguin, while Jessica Gunning took home the award for Best Actress in a Miniseries for Baby Reindeer.
In a highly anticipated moment, Jane Fonda was honoured with the SAG Life Achievement Award for her decades-long contributions to cinema and activism.
With Shōgun reigning supreme in television and A Real Pain’s Kieran Culkin continuing his awards season streak, the results set the stage for the upcoming Oscars and Emmys, marking 2025 as a year of powerful performances and compelling storytelling.
