As Pakistan gears up for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a squad featuring only one specialist opener: Fakhar Zaman.
The announcement has sparked interest over who will partner Fakhar at the top of the order, with Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel emerging as potential candidates.
Fakhar’s return to the national side after the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup is a significant development for Pakistan’s batting lineup.
However, the absence of Saim Ayub, who is sidelined due to an ankle injury, and the exclusion of Abdullah Shafique due to inconsistent form have left a gap at the top.
In a statement released by the PCB, national selector Asad Shafiq addressed the opening issue, stating that the team management would make the final decision based on factors like pitch conditions, opposition, and match strategy.

“Fakhar Zaman’s return is a significant boost for our top-order. His aggressive approach and match-winning capabilities are vital to our plans,” said Shafiq, underlining Fakhar's importance in the team.
He further added that Saud Shakeel’s inclusion was aimed at strengthening the batting lineup. Shakeel’s recent form in Test cricket, particularly in home conditions, has been impressive, and his calculated, steady approach makes him a valuable asset.
“Saud Shakeel is an intelligent and experienced batter who constructs his innings thoughtfully and excels in building partnerships. He will be crucial for us during the Champions Trophy,” Shafiq stated.
As for Babar Azam, the captain’s versatile skills make him an ideal candidate for the opening slot. Babar has regularly opened in T20Is and has delivered under pressure, including his impressive performances in the Cape Town Test in Saim Ayub’s absence.
