Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar rejected on Thursday Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s offer of forming the parliamentary committee.
Speaking exclusively to Samaa TV, Barrister Gohar termed it unrelated to the party’s demands. “The prime minister spoke on an irrelevant subject today,” stated Gohar.
He maintained that the prime minister’s statement did not align with PTI’s demands.
Gohar clarified that PTI had not included any demand concerning elections or mandate in its charter of demand.
“Our demand was the establishment of a judicial commission and the release of imprisoned party members,” he asserted.
Gohar categorically stated that PTI would not consider the prime minister’s unrelated offer.
He further accused the government of delaying negotiations and missing a crucial opportunity.
“It is unfortunate that the government never intended to form a neutral commission,” he said.
– Shibli Faraz rejects house committee proposal as ineffective –
PTI leader Shibli Faraz dismissed the proposal of forming a house committee, stating that such an approach was not appropriate.
“A house committee is not the right way to proceed,” Shibli Faraz asserted, criticising the government’s approach. He remarked that the prime minister’s true stance was reflected in his behaviour towards other political parties.
Faraz stressed that people placed their trust in commissions, whereas the suggestion of forming a house committee lacked effectiveness. He argued that had the government been serious about negotiations, a committee would have been established by now.
“Our struggle for law and justice has continued,” Faraz stated. “We will continue to present ourselves before the law and justice system, no matter the circumstances,” he added.
He further observed that the country had plunged into political instability. He emphasised that PTI had agreed to negotiations to rescue the nation from political crises.
However, he maintained that the government’s sincerity was essential to bringing matters to a conclusion.
Separately, PM Shehbaz chaired a federal cabinet meeting on Thursday, addressing national security concerns, political developments, and economic measures.
The premier paid heartfelt tribute to Major Hamza Israr and Sepoy Muhammad Naeem, who sacrificed their lives in the fight against terrorism in North Waziristan.
He lauded the armed forces, emphasizing that the sacrifices of young officers and soldiers are vital for the nation's peace and stability. "A 29-year-old major gave his life for the country. It is our duty to honour and respect these sacrifices," he stated.
Highlighting the significance of security, PM Sharif stressed that economic growth is impossible without peace. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to countering extremism, stating that those challenging the state's authority will be dealt with firmly.
Talks with PTI
Addressing the political situation, Shehbaz revealed that the government had accepted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) offer for dialogue and even formed a committee for negotiations. However, the PTI backed out of the scheduled meeting on January 28, refusing to participate, he added.
“They ran away after setting the date. We said we will respond to them in writing,” he said, adding that past political investigations, including those from 2018, were never pursued properly. He also questioned why the PTI’s 2014 sit-in is overlooked when discussing political matters.
"The committee formed for investigation in 2018 did not hold a single meeting," he remarked, adding that they should look at their own conduct first. "We are ready to form a house committee."
"If they talk about November 26, 2024, then the 2014 sit-in should also be considered. We sincerely want the negotiations to move forward," he stressed.
– Economic measures –
On the economic front, PM Shehbaz welcomed the 1% reduction in interest rates but stated that a 2% cut would have been more beneficial for economic growth.
He emphasised that Pakistan cannot afford further economic losses, urging a stable financial environment.
– Human trafficking –
The premier expressed deep concern over human trafficking, which has led to the loss of Pakistani lives abroad and damaged the country’s reputation.
He stressed that the government is taking strict action against human smuggling networks and will not engage in discussions with China or other stakeholders until such illegal activities are eradicated.
