Sri Lankan cricketer Kamindu Mendis was named the ICC Emerging Player of the Year 2024, following an exceptional season that highlighted his prowess across formats.
The 26-year-old left-handed batter scored 1,451 runs at an average of over 50, firmly establishing himself among the sport’s rising stars.
In Test cricket, Mendis delivered a standout performance, amassing 1,049 runs from nine matches at an extraordinary average of 74.92.
His contributions included five centuries and three half-centuries, many achieved during crucial moments for Sri Lanka. These decisive performances solidified his position as a cornerstone of the national Test side.
Starting the year with just one Test appearance, Mendis emerged as a pivotal figure in all formats. He aided Sri Lanka’s campaign for their maiden ICC World Test Championship Final spot and was among six batters to surpass 1,000 Test runs in the calendar year.
Notably, he achieved the highest average among the group.
During the series in England, Mendis concluded as Sri Lanka's leading run-scorer in the three-Test campaign. His efforts were instrumental in securing Sri Lanka’s first Test victory on English soil in a decade.
Mendis’ career-best performance occurred in the second Test against New Zealand in Galle.
He scored an unbeaten 182 in the first innings, featuring 16 boundaries and four sixes from 250 balls.
This innings anchored Sri Lanka’s imposing total of 602/5, leading to a 2-0 series sweep and earning him the Player of the Match award.
His consistent displays placed him in elite company, as he became the joint-third fastest player to score 1,000 Test runs, equalling Sir Don Bradman’s record of achieving the milestone in 13 innings.
"Winning two ICC Player of the Month Awards in 2024, along with being named the ICC Emerging Men’s Cricketer of the Year, fills me with immense joy and pride," Mendis said. "These accolades are a testament to the hard work and dedication I’ve put into my game, with the unwavering support of my coaches, teammates, family, and friends."
Reflecting on his journey, he remarked, "Playing international cricket has always been a childhood dream. Having the chance to showcase my skills on such a platform is both an honour and a result of relentless effort."
Mendis also expressed admiration for his fellow nominees, stating, "I would also like to acknowledge the immense talent of Gus, Shamar, and Saim — all of whom are exceptional players."
