PTI’s Junaid Akbar Khan has been elected as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) unopposed, following an emergency meeting held to finalise the appointment.
The decision marks a consensus between the government and the opposition, with PTI nominating Junaid Akbar Khan for the key parliamentary role.
The emergency meeting, attended by members of the PAC, saw the presence of prominent figures, including PTI leaders Shibli Faraz, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Omer Ayub, Riaz Fatyana, and Qasim Noon, as well as PML-N’s Chief Whip Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, Shzra Mansab and PML-N Senator Afnanullah. A total of nine PAC members gathered in Committee Room No 2 to finalise the decision.
As per details, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, Omer Ayub and Shibli Faraz proposed Junaid's name. Riaz Fatyana, Aamir Dogar, Wajiha Qamar, Sardar Yousuf and others backed the nomination. The PAC members congratulated Junaid Akbar Khan.
Junaid Akbar Khan thanked the committee members for unanimously electing him as the PAC chairman. "I will take all the members of the PAC with me," he remarked, while the members assured him of their full support in leading the committee.
The PAC, comprising 29 members (22 MNAs and seven senators), plays a crucial role in overseeing government expenditures and ensuring accountability. The government had agreed to hand over the PAC chairmanship to the opposition PTI, mutually agreed upon the nomination of Junaid Akbar.
Initially, the PTI had considered Sheikh Waqas Akram for the position, but the party later proposed Junaid Akbar Khan’s name, which was finalized after consultations with the government. The opposition formally informed the government of its decision, paving the way for Junaid Akbar’s election.
