The Punjab cabinet has approved an amendment to Section 24 of the Motor Vehicle Ordinance Act 1965 in a move to simplify vehicle registration processes, allowing motor vehicle owners to register their vehicles in any district across the province.
Previously, under Section 24, vehicle owners were mandated to register their vehicles in their home district. With the amendment, Punjab residents now have the freedom to get their vehicles registered in any district of their choice.
An Excise and Taxation Department spokesperson highlighted that registration numbers are being allotted under a unified series across Punjab.
The spokesperson also clarified that there are no restrictions on the movement of vehicles between provinces, ensuring freedom of mobility for Punjab residents.

Just a few days ago, the Punjab government approved a significant shift in its vehicle registration policy, aimed at curbing tax evasion and improving security. Under the new policy, citizens of Punjab were prohibited from registering their vehicles in other provinces or in Islamabad.
The decision, which was ratified by the Punjab cabinet, was welcomed by the Punjab Excise and Taxation Department. Excise officials have long expressed concerns over the widespread practice of Punjab residents registering their vehicles outside the province, often in neighbouring regions or the federal capital, to avoid local taxes.
