Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday condemned acts of violence and destruction in Balochistan, stating that those responsible are not only enemies of the province but of the entire country.
Addressing a federal cabinet meeting, the premier termed the opposition to Gwadar Port a direct affront to Pakistan’s sovereignty and economic future.
“Those fueling violence and destruction are not just targeting the people of Balochistan but demonstrating hostility towards Pakistan,” he remarked, emphasizing the strategic importance of the Gwadar project.
In a significant development, PM Shehbaz highlighted the inauguration of operations at Gwadar International Airport, a $230 million project funded by China.
Calling it a milestone for the region, he noted that the airport’s functionality could bolster Balochistan’s economy and relieve pressure on Karachi’s overburdened ports.
“Gwadar Airport is one of Pakistan’s major airports. Its utilization for business purposes will greatly benefit the economies of Balochistan and Pakistan,” he said, expressing gratitude to China for its financial support and partnership in the project.
He further stressed the need for national unity to safeguard Pakistan’s economic interests and critical infrastructure, such as Gwadar Port.
Ceasefire in Gaza and humanitarian relief
Prime Minister Shehbaz also turned his attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, expressing hope that the recently declared 42-day ceasefire would evolve into a permanent peace.
“Over 50,000 Palestinians have been martyred, including mothers, children, and professionals, while thousands have been imprisoned. Cities lie in ruins,” he said, lamenting the scale of destruction in the besieged territory.
PM Shehbaz assured that Pakistan would continue to support Gaza, citing the dispatch of much-needed relief supplies. “As the phase of reconstruction begins, Pakistan will contribute to its capacity,” he pledged.
IT exports and economic indicators
On the domestic front, Shehbaz Sharif lauded Pakistan’s progress in the IT sector, revealing that December 2024 marked the highest monthly IT exports in the country’s history at $348 million.
“Our IT exports are growing steadily, and this trend bodes well for Pakistan’s economy. We must continue working hard to build on these positive indicators,” he stated.
He also welcomed the World Bank’s $20 billion partnership initiative, set to invest in various sectors over the next decade. While acknowledging the loans involved, the Prime Minister described the partnership as a positive step for Pakistan’s development.
Tribute to martyrs and national unity
Shehbaz Sharif paid homage to the sacrifices made by security forces and citizens in combating terrorism, asserting that their contributions had saved countless lives and preserved national stability.
“There is no greater glory than protecting millions of children from becoming orphans by sacrificing our own children,” he said, urging the nation to work collectively toward peace, progress, and prosperity.
