Hours after being sworn in as the 47th President of United States Donald Trump signed a series of executive orders.
Among his first actions, he pardoned individuals convicted in the 2021 Capitol Hill riots, withdrew the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement, and delayed a ban on the Chinese-owned app TikTok by 75 days.
The signing of eight executive orders took place in front of a cheering crowd at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., with Trump dramatically showcasing his signature before tossing pens into the audience.
The remaining orders were finalized later in the Oval Office.
“We’re going to revoke nearly 80 destructive and radical executive actions of the previous administration,” Trump told supporters, describing the Biden administration as “one of the worst in history.”
Key executive orders
-
Pardon of Capitol Hill rioters:
Trump granted full pardons to nearly 1,270 individuals convicted in connection with the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots. Additionally, around 300 pending cases were dropped, and 14 defendants facing serious sedition charges were released. -
Withdrawal from Paris Climate agreement:
Reiterating his 2020 stance, Trump announced the U.S. exit from the global climate accord, stating that the agreement unfairly burdened American industry. -
Delay on TikTok ban:
The President extended the ban on TikTok by 75 days, allowing his administration time to assess “appropriate actions.” Trump maintained that the U.S. would either “sell or close” the app. -
Withdrawal from WHO:
Trump also ordered the U.S. to exit the World Health Organization, accusing the agency of mishandling the COVID-19 pandemic and yielding to political influences. -
Immigration crackdown:
Declaring a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border, Trump ordered the deployment of additional military resources and labeled drug cartels as terrorist organizations. He also signed an order to end birthright citizenship while maintaining support for legal immigration.
In addition to these high-profile actions, Trump rescinded 78 Biden-era executive orders, froze federal hiring, and mandated a return to in-person work for federal employees.
He also introduced measures aimed at addressing the cost-of-living crisis and launched investigations into alleged censorship and the “weaponization” of government agencies.
The President’s sweeping orders have sparked intense debate, with critics calling the moves divisive while supporters praise them as decisive leadership.
These early actions set the tone for Trump’s second term, reflecting his promise to restore what he called “freedom and fairness” while undoing many policies of the Biden administration.
