As winter sets in, medical experts have raised alarms about the heightened risks for individuals suffering from heart conditions and high blood pressure.
Cold weather, they say, can exacerbate health issues, and neglecting precautionary measures could prove fatal.
Professor Tahir Sagheer, Executive Director of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), explained that the cold leads to constriction of blood vessels, disrupting the normal flow of blood and placing additional strain on the heart.
"The risk of heart attacks increases significantly during the winter months due to these factors," he stated.
Professor Nawaz Lashari, President of the Pakistan Hypertension League, also echoed these concerns, warning the public about the dangers of sudden exposure to cold water, which could lead to fatal consequences.
"Taking a cold shower in such weather can be life-threatening, especially for those with heart ailments or high blood pressure," Lashari said.
The experts emphasised the importance of regular exercise, particularly walking, as a means of maintaining heart health and reducing the risk of heart attacks.
"A simple daily walk can go a long way in keeping your heart healthy and in lowering the chances of a heart attack," Professor Sagheer advised.
Despite these warnings, many residents of Karachi voiced concerns over the lack of adequate heating options in their homes. "Due to the ongoing gas shortage, we are unable to warm water for bathing, which makes it even harder to take precautions against the cold," said one local resident.
In light of these warnings, the medical professionals continue to urge citizens to take necessary steps to safeguard their health during the harsh winter months.
