The long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 has been officially announced via a short teaser video on the company's YouTube page.
While details remain scarce, the video highlights key changes from the original Nintendo Switch, along with the first new Mario Kart game in over a decade.
New design
The Switch 2 sports a modern all-black colour scheme with subtle red and blue accents on its redesigned Joy-Cons. Unlike its predecessor, the Joy-Cons no longer slide into the console but instead attach via a proprietary magnetic docking system.
Nintendo has also introduced a second USB-C port at the top of the console, making it easier to charge while playing. Additionally, the kickstand has been extended, mimicking the Switch OLED for improved stability.
Compatibility concerns
The Switch 2’s screen is larger, though Nintendo has not yet confirmed whether it uses LED or OLED technology. Notably, an announcement at the end of the video suggests that some original Nintendo Switch games will not be compatible with the new system, possibly due to hardware changes affecting accessories like Ring Fit Adventure.
Mario Kart title
In a surprise reveal, the teaser video briefly showcased a new Mario Kart game, marking the first all-new console release for the franchise since Mario Kart 8 launched on the Wii U in 2014.
Fans eager for more details won’t have to wait long—Nintendo has scheduled a Nintendo Direct presentation on April 2, where additional information about the Switch 2’s features, game lineup, and hardware capabilities will be shared.
Release date
While an exact release date hasn’t been announced, Nintendo has confirmed the Switch 2 will launch in 2025.
However, select fans will get an early hands-on experience through the Nintendo Switch 2 Experience, with registration opening on January 17.
With significant design changes and a new Mario Kart title, the Nintendo Switch 2 is shaping up to be an exciting evolution of Nintendo’s hybrid console.
