Bollywood actor Urvashi Rautela has issued a public apology to Saif Ali Khan after facing severe criticism for her comments on his recent attack. The apology, posted on her Instagram account on Friday, was later deleted.
The 30-year-old actor admitted to being "ignorant and insensitive" while addressing the incident in an interview earlier this week.
Saif Ali Khan, 54, was attacked at his Bandra residence in the early hours of Thursday by an armed intruder.
The attacker, who reportedly stabbed the actor six times, fled the scene before being apprehended. Khan was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent surgery and is currently recovering.
In her since-deleted post, Rautela expressed regret over her remarks, which were made during an interview with ANI. Instead of focusing on the gravity of the attack, she spoke about her diamond-studded Rolex watch and the success of her latest film Daaku Maharaaj.
Rautela’s apology
Rautela addressed Saif Ali Khan directly in her apology, writing, “Dear Saif Ali Khan sir, I hope this message finds you in strength. I am writing with a deep sense of regret and a heartfelt apology. Until now, I was completely unaware of the intensity of the situation you are facing.”
She added, “I feel ashamed for being consumed by the excitement surrounding Daaku Maharaaj and the gifts I was receiving, instead of pausing to acknowledge and understand what you are going through. Please accept my sincerest apologies for being so ignorant and insensitive.”
The actor also pledged to be more mindful, stating, “Now that I know the gravity of your case, I am deeply moved and want to extend my unwavering support. If there is any way I can help, please do not hesitate to let me know.”
Public backlash
Rautela’s comments during the interview were met with a wave of criticism on social media. When asked about celebrity safety in light of Saif’s attack, she remarked, “It is very unfortunate. Now Daaku Maharaaj has crossed Rs105 crore at the box office, and my mother gifted me this diamond-studded Rolex, while my father gifted me this mini watch on my finger, but we don’t feel confident wearing it outside. There is this insecurity that anybody can attack us.”
Her remarks were widely condemned online, with many users accusing her of being tone-deaf. Comments such as “out of touch” and “seriously delusional” flooded her social media posts.
Developments in Saif Ali Khan case
Meanwhile, investigations into the attack on Saif Ali Khan continue. A photograph of the suspect has surfaced, and Mumbai Police have deployed 35 teams to track down the assailant. According to initial reports, the attacker gained access to Khan’s residence under the pretense of delivering a package.
Saif Ali Khan, who is known for his roles in iconic films such as Omkara and Tanhaji, is said to be stable and recuperating. Family sources have confirmed that he is cooperating with authorities and is under tight security.
Police officials have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any information related to the case as they continue their efforts to apprehend the perpetrator.
