A terrorist attack on a convoy of relief goods in the Char Diwal area near Bagan in Lower Kurram left a security official martyred and four others injured, local officials confirmed. The attack also resulted in significant damage to three vehicles in the convoy.
Security forces retaliated, killing six terrorists and injuring 10 others, according to the district administration. Police reports indicate that the attackers looted vehicles and set some returning vehicles on fire.
Gunship helicopters were dispatched to the area to provide air support and contain the situation. Sounds of firing echoed across the region as security forces continued their operation to secure the convoy and eliminate the miscreants.
Witnesses reported that more than 70 vehicles had entered Kurram in the morning, many of which were targeted during the attack. The drivers of the convoy were reportedly taken into custody by the attackers before the vehicles were looted, they said.
Speaking to the media, Kurram district police officer (DPO) assured that the situation is under control and half of the convoy has already been sent back to Tal. "Security forces and police responded promptly to the firing, and no miscreants will be spared," the DPO said, adding that there was no confirmation regarding loss of life or property.
Former federal minister Sajid Turi condemned the attack, calling it a regrettable act of repeated violence against convoys in the region.
